Gents - my D4V8 has just clocked over 102,000 km's. I plan on taking it over from the wife and setting it up for mild touring and off-roading (rack, lights, wheels, tyres)

Here's my question. As i've decided to keep the V8 and not trade it on a lower-km SDV6, should I turn to a slightly thicker oil than what my mechanic uses now (which I believe is Castrol Magnatec 5/40)?

I"m also thinking about doing some preventative maintenance like wheel bearings, front control arms (which need doing anyway as the bushes are knackered), sway-bar bushings etc..

keen to get some opinions.

For regular driving theres not much to gain from going to a higher viscosity than a 40 grade oil IMHO - you normally wouldnt be putting much of a heat load into the oil to warrent bumping upto a 50 grade oil. The 5W part is the winter rating of a multigrade oil and has no bearing on the 40 grade at operating temp.

cheers Shane - i agree with you on the viscosity - guess i'm more interested if I should be moving to Penrite and/or an oil with a higher zinc content

or another oil (open to advice) that is geared at higher-mileage engines

I've been running Valvoline Synpower FE 5W30 in my D3 for a while, but next change I'll be swapping over to Synpower 5W40 as I've been monitoring the engine oil temps while towing during the summer months - not uncommon to see the oil temp go over 120deg here - but I suspect your V8 wont be putting such a high heat load into the oil compared to my 2.7TD. I would personaly favour most of the ACEA A3/B4 oils as they have a higher HTHS (high temp high shear) visocity.

I think your idea of high mileage and mine are different[bigsmile]My D3 has 245,000 on it now and I wont consider that high milage until another 100,000 (and all going well I'll be the one to put them on it[smilebigeye])

Do some reading on the V8 5 litre oil requirements. From what I've read it is very important to stick to the specifications set by Landrover.

From what I can determine, the oil specs for the V8 petrol are

SAE 5W-20 meeting specificationWSS-M2C925-A only.
Fairly narrow specs - and IMHO its a spec thats solely geared towards fuel economy.
Castrol egdge A1 profesional meets the spec, so its an ACEA A1/B1 oil. I'd prefer to run at least at A5/B5 oil

Stick with the original oil.
100k kms on that V8. It's just worn in!
