Hi Folks,
I have a '95 Disco 300tdi nearly at 200 000km and am thinking the timing belt needs a change - though I dont know when it was last done. I have looked at all the info I can find on the web but it still does not seem like a job I want to do myself.....
I would be interetsed to hear if it really is that hard - or if anyone knows of a reliable LR mechanic around South Coast NSW - Nowra.
There used to be a dealer here but now they seem to have joined the growing list of ex LR dealers....
Any suggestions would be welcome.

As an aside, the book says the belt should be changed at 60000km., but I think that is very conservative and 100k. more realistic.

I have been told by Fred Smith the 300 should be done every 60k and must be done by 100k or your risking it. Where as the 200 should be done every 100k and must be done by 140k or risk it.

The 300 tdi may require an upgrade kit if it wasn't done with the first timing belt change. I had mine done at 100k at the LR dealer and they said mine didn't need the upgrade. Just another bull story from them. Had the 200k change and the mechanic showed me the 8mm gouge from the side of the belt and suggested the upgrade of the sprockets. Expensive but may be worth the trouble in the long run.
I don't know if there is a way of checking if the upgrade has been done on your vehicle I believe the cogs/sprockets for the belt may have a lip on the front edge. Can anyone else advise??

The upgraded cog/pulley comes in the T/belt kit from karcraft for about $250for the whole kit (belt , tensioner , gasket , etc )
LR will try to charge you that just for the belt 8O

The first belt change on mine was at 40k the second was at 120k (and the belt had worn about 6mm on one edge from rubbing). I had the upgrade done at 120k.
It will be interesting to see the difference when I do it again at 180 - 200k.
I thought that was interesting that the last advisory was the change in torque setting:

If you have a look through our newsletter (or in edition 13 which has an index at the back of all previous editions), we had a member write up his 300tdi timing belt change.
