View Full Version : Turning off rear parking sensors - 2016 D4 SE

Ok, I've looked everywhere and can't find a relevant thread. My rear parking sensors are maddening. I want to be able to turn them off, particularly when backing up the camper trailer, but can't find the button anywhere. The manual says it's in the row above the aircon control dial, but not on my car.
I originally thought that they'd turn off automatically when a trailer was hooked up, but that may not be the case since the car was re-wired with a 12-pin socket to replace the OEM one. They certainly fire up with little provocation now.

Any chance of a photo of the dash/console area? May help to id the correct button if you're missing it. Years of IT work cause me to ask the insulting questions - sorry.[bigsmile1]

The MY 14 onwards doesn't have the button.
The volume knob for the juke box is your friend.OR you need a pulse buster box,or a resistor on the indicator wire,or when you are olde enough like ATH,remove the batteries from your hearing aids[bawl][bawl][bawl][bawl]

122119122120Okay, here's a photo of the dash, and from the relevant page in the manual...curiously, the photos were up the right way when uploaded, and now appear upside down. But you get the picture:-)

What did you do on the Rangie,I would have thought they shared the issue.

The Rangie had a big button on the dash, so it was easy. Can't find anything on the Disco. Haven't 'graduated' to hearing aids yet Andrew:-)

Install ballast resistors to the trailer indicator wiring to trigger the car to know the trailer is there and disable them. See the trailer sticky for more info. Aside from that scenario, as mentioned, I believe when they're beeping you can turn them down with the audio volume to set their level. I have a button (ner ner [emoji1])

Greg.
Do you tow multiple LED trailers??? Its the LED's that cause your problem.
If you tow multiple trailers its best to convert the D4.
You need to put a resistor on a indicator line in the rear compartment,it needs to be have a switch so it can be active or inactive. This lets the D4 know its got a trailer back there. It does different things to the electronics, including that bloody noise!!!!Or the pulse busta box will do the same.
Now,you had your wiring done by olde mate in Osborne park,he would be on top of this.Is there a new switch in the rear cargo area??? That would be the resistor switch.Give him a call and see if he did it.

Supposedly also selects a towing gearbox profile as well when it detects a trailer, though I'm not sure I've seen written evidence from LR on it, or noticed much difference to be honest.

No just the new camper trailer Andy. Autospark installed the active/inactive switch in the cargo bay alongside the two 12v sockets, so I turn it on when towing and off when not towing. The trailer icon comes up on the dash when turn indicating if I'm towing. Still, the park sensors go off in reverse. It might have something to do with the rear wheel carrier. Will have to take the whole rig to the sparkie I guess.

Here's what it looks like in the cargo bay:

Now we are getting somewhere!!!! You don't know if its changed since the wheel carrier was fitted????
That switch should shut them up when deployed!!!

Autospark installed all the electrics, then Opposite Lock did the RWC including re-mounting one of the parking sensors. I hadn't hooked up the trailer to test anything till Good Friday, when the issue became apparent.

Mine does but has the tow pack so might be different then. My van has old fashioned bulby type lights and when connected, the rear sensors are not active.

Hi Greg.

The other button next to the Hazard Lights switch is the one on mine that turns the sound off. I wonder if it is connected but not enabled and may be able to be turned on with a GAP IIDTool or Black Box Nanocom.

Must be model dependent as this topic has been discussed before.

From memory, the button only comes with having front sensors and then will disable front and rear. If rear only fitted you have to use volume control as Andrew suggested. However it seems odd that the sensors stay on when your new switch works to illuminate the trailer dash symbol, which presumably means the vehicle knows there's a trailer. Disabled sensors and trailer symbol usually go together.

that makes sense, thanks Scott. Seems weird not to be able to switch it off though. It was very convenient having that switch in the Rangie.

Correct Scott. My MY16 HSE has front sensors and the turn-off button is the big button on the RHS of the hazard button.

Is the trailer light on the dash flashing when the indicators are flashing? That will tell you if the trailer is actually being recognised and the vehicle has gone into trailer mode, in which case the rear sensors should be disabled.

Another thing to try if the RWC is the culprit is some insulation tape across part of the offending sensor. I've done this with my 2 inner sensors which don't like the Mitch Hitch.

I have the opposite problem. The previous owner permanently disabled the sensors, presumably due to interference from the Mitch Hitch and Kaymar rear bar. Not sure how it was done because GAP IID says they are enabled and I have sensors in the bar. Occasionally I wish I had them for safer reversing but at least I don't have your problems, Greg.

Andrew, with the switch being installed in the cargo bay, I have to manually switch it on when towing and off when not towing. When 'on' the trailer indicator lights up on the dash during turn indication. Unfortunately, it also lights up when there's no trailer attached, if the switch is inadvertently left on. Confusing, huh?

No Andrew, even with the switch turned off, it's still beeping. More and more I think it's a RWC issue.

Hook it up then tape 1 sensor at a time, see if you can sort who isn't the happy camper.

The switch in one position should stop the sensors and in the other should start them. The RWC has no bearing on that. If the switch is not turning off the sensors then something weird is happening. It's odd that you say the trailer light shows up but it still beeps. Do you have front sensors? Front sensors are not disabled when a trailer is connected.

I would be taking the whole box and dice back to old mate in Osborne Park.Surely with the coins spent plus the positive customer feedback you have been placing he will help you out.
