D4 Spinifex screen??

Has anyone made up a Spinifex screen for the front of a D4? I'm doing a desert trip in June along several of Len's roads which will have growth along the middle of the tracks, and don't want to scoop up a heap of seeds and crap into the radiators. It would have to cover down to below the lower scoop, near to the recovery eye to be effective. I was thinking of making something on the sewing machine with shade cloth etc. Any examples out there?

Be aware just how much flywire and shade cloth reduce airflow. They create a high pressure restriction point and the air finds it much easier to go around than through it.

Yep aware of that. A gut full of spinifex seeds will restrict airflow also and be a crap load harder to clean out.

It's not just a screen for the radiator you need. A long piece of welding rod or similar with a handle at one end and a hook bent at the other is mandatory for getting underneath and pulling the accumulated grass out every 30" or so depending on how bad it is on the track. As well a pressurised 2l water container with an adjustable nozzle to damp of any smoking bits.

If the grass is thick do not underestimate how quickly you can have a fire going under the car

Hooked wire rod already sorted. Keeping my eye out for a suitable water sprayer at the moment.

Might position myself down the back of the convoy and let the others strip the track clean for me.... 😉😉

Sounds like you are organised. The big shed or any garden supplies place will have a suitable 2-4l hand pump powered pressure spray device. Go with something tough not lightweight it won't handle getting bounced around in the car

Go to a farmers supply store.Grab a 9l pressurised water fire extinguisher,they are cheap.You refill with water and pump them up with the air compressor.Cheapest at farmers stores as they are mandatory on harvest gear.
You will also have a useful water container that can be used for cleaning if need be.

Fly screen might last last longer than shade cloth. Get it with larger holes in it. Another option might be to buy one of the new webbing cargo nets.
Can you cable-tie it in place?
