Hi All,
I've have a noise in the drive train for a few months. After heading to Condingup (east of Esperance) for Easter it has now become terrible. There is also a vibration. I thinking it's the tranny. If I'm coasting and drop it into neutral the noise goes away.
Thoughts on the problem?
If it is the tranny what are the options? I know (IIRC from previous discussions) a recon unit will cost about $7,000. What are the other options?
Thanks in anticipation.

It could be drive shafts, univeral joints or even diff under load only? Can you hear it at walking speed? If so get out and see if you can pin it down a bit more. Probably best to have some one driving while you walk but I have done it with out a driver in a paddock feeding out a few hundred times :)
If its is the gear box A&B automatics (http://www.abautomatics.com.au/) offered me about 5.5k for a reconditioned box with warranty. That was installed so to buy it and get some one in WA to do it for you it should be about 5k or so to buy only. Shipping should only be a hundred or two.
Hope you get it sorted.

I've had some dealings with Precision Autos in Osborne Park. They seem genuine and I don't think they'd sell you a box if it didn't need it. They will O//H or do recon boxes too.
Incidentally have you had the box serviced? And how long ago??

Would think it more likely to be shot bearing in transfer case or diffs .

I would check the rear tail-shaft centre bearing first.

I had pretty much the same problem in my D2, It ended up being a collapsed bearing in my transfer case.

when my trans let go it startd to make a whine like a supercharger belt around the front of the trans - could be heard when parked up idling. Mine got done by Automac transmissions in myree Bailey Automatics | Perth | RAC Automatic Repairer (http://www.baileyautomatics.com.au/) Service was good, it just took a long time as they pulled the trans, stripped it down and decided it was too badly damaged for them to rebuild, so it got sent to ZF in sydney. It then required a few parts that got sent on the slow boat taking the scenic route - all up around 10 weeks before I had my disco back. ZF charge around $4300 for a rebuild so you'll need to factor in the remove and replace costs ontop of that

Thanks for replies.
The box has been serviced as it has the metal pan. Not sure when, as it was done prior to my ownership. I've had it for about 70,000 kms so I was/am going to service it. Was going to prior to the Easter trip but with the noise I didn't want to spend money on a service (with no guarantee of saving it) only to find I had to replace it anyway.
Failed bearing.....Interesting, on reflection, it sounds like a very grumbly bearing. I'll have to investigate with this in mind.
Thanks again all.

Id also go for a front or rear diff bearing issue. Get someone who knows these vehicles to check.
We are replacing a few now. You can fit a D4 rear diff in its place (must be like for like, not ediff if you don't have one already)

Thanks JC. I'm heading in to see Rovertech tomorrow. The noise is from the front and is really bad when engine braking. It definitely not engine related.

OK. So visited Keven today and one of his guys took a whole half a block to determine it's the front diff that's gone. A quick check of the oil confirmed as metal was visible as is ran out of the diff.
So $1750 for a recond unit or $2850 for a factory refurbished jobby?
JC, Thanks for your guidance and Keven says Hi back. Says you're a great guy but couldn't understand how you had time to look on here :)

Car has circa 250k on the clock.
Not sure when fluids last changed but previous owner was fastidious with his maintenance so expect/suspect they would have been changed at some point. I had been considering doing all the fluids (will do now, of course!...horse...gate....bolted?.....) at next service. The guys at Rovertech said they are seeing a lot of them, so much so they carry a number in stock. Apparently only 700mls of oil is a problem.

I think you will find a brand new unit for around $1400.

Interesting. Where from? I've had a quick look on Rimmer and Island 4x4 and they were significantly more expensive than that.

Sorry, got a bit ahead of myself.
Had a brand new D3 rear diff costing $1895.00 + labour fitted by MR Automotive in October last year.

No worries. I got a little excited........
A diff mob will do $1650 fitted. But I think I'm going to go with $1925 (my quoted price in an earlier post was was ex GST) from Rovertech for vehicle familiarity and peace of mind. I'll also get all the fluids changed.

The common issues with the pre 06 models was blocking of the breather allowing moisture to build up. I have drained many of red brown rusty oil. The breather was upgraded in 07 onward to a better design that prevented the problem. Lots of early ones suffer this fate as lr also leave huge kms between diff oul changes.

The D2's take just over a litre,,
why would they go to a lower volume?
so do you change it more often,
or go a better grade of oil?

Was it only a rumor that the Ford Ranger runs the same diff????
I only would have read it on here.

I'd do both. Im going to increase the viscoscity for the diffs on my next change and monitor if theres any improvment to the wear metals compared to whats currently in there

Does the oil in the D2 diff lubricate the wheel bearings? So you'd need more oil to go along the axle.

No... Sealed units

Careful - Can induce the opposite effect...
Lubrication of gears is a required coating forced between 2 (or more) mating surfaces designed to prevent metal to metal contact...
If the viscosity is too great the surfaces are forced apart and can induce wear elsewhere (as mating surfaces now meet incorrectly) - or even worse it can break things!
And then there is oil carrying air molecules which under pressure do some lovely things (and cause surface damage)

Thanks BC, I just read your post with interest.
The bad noise is definitely the front diff. Getting it done in a few weeks. However I do have a small shudder in the box. Your post was interesting as firstly I am going to try the flush and Dr Tranny and was your success give me hope and secondly I thought gee should I buy you box as insurance?? I'll probably go the flush and see how it goes.

Surely with the amount of wrecked D3/4s and RRS at Triumph Spares a low km replacement must be feasible? Or is it too risky from a wreck in most cases? Or even from a Falcon XR6?
