I have a friend who needs to find the chassis number on a MK3 ex Aust army International.
He is trying for historic rego and we need to check the chassis no to see if it matches the paper work supplied with the vehicle.
My friend has checked the front RHD chassis rail for markings and couldn't see any ?????
where would the chassis number be stamped.
Regards
Ron

Front left chassis rail I thought.

It should also be stamped on the data plate at the front. Lift the bonet and look at the top of the radiator.
I'll see if I can find some pictures.

We need to sight the chassis number on the chassis and take a photo of it to keep the club register happy as he gets lots of people giving him casting or part numbers instead of the true chassis number and to check the papers with the truck and spec plates all tally up.

Mick we are trying to find a jerrycan holder rack for the RHS near the brakemaster cylinder and a original RVB horn for a MK3.
This new owner of the truck is very lucky as it is very original and not mucked around with.
It was sold though frontline machinery about a year ago and believed to have come from the SME museum Moorebank

I know what you mean.
One of my 101s is registered with a casting number as the engine number. I tried to get it changed with the registration department. They refused to acknowledge their error and accused me of changing the engine. It all got too hard so I walked away.

And, my brown Mercedes, they changed to black on the rego info. So I just shut up about it.

I'll confirm the chassis stamping location tomorrow.

Shouldn't be hard to make one. It's basically flat strap and angle.122240
Maybe Diana or Cookey would know where one is.

My mate has been intensively looking for that Chassis number on the LHS chassis rail near the muffler.
In the same spot as the above photo he has found the markings below.

I thought it was not the chassis number , but now think it could be.
the location is correct.
the plate with chassis number is missing near the radiator.
The truck is a MK3, but I am now thinking it is a very early one.
It has a oil bath air filter and a Lucas generator fitted.
Would 2500 be the chassis number?????????
one other interesting thing about this MK3 is the mod plate is still intact and it is completely stamped out and the truck has MK4 nose and mud guards fitted , but still has the earlier pendant brake pedal , engine cover etc.
I first thought ......ADE 4x4 and the 2500 was capacity in KG.......now thinking it may be very early low digit chassis number??????????
Any ideas???????????????

Mine is 945. That is ADE4X4945. It is a '64 model.
The one you posted up, ADE4x42500, is quite late. Possibly a Mk4? It might even have been a Vietnam veteran rebuilt with a new chassis when it returned.

A quick look on the ARN page:
174-150 1968 - Mk.4 6069C Truck, Cargo, 2 1/2 Ton, GS, With Winch 6.282.09529 2501

It's not listed but chassis 2501 is a 1968 Mk4. I suspect the one your mate has is the same or a rechassied Mk3.

What is the engine No.?

Most likely not the original engine.
I don't have the engine number handy.
A plate on the engine states it was rebuilt 1985 in Sydney.
Single carby, dual exhaust pipe/ muffler.

Will get the engine number soon as I can.
the instruments are the earlier style, not the later type found in Mk4s.

Just been chasing that chassis number on the AWM old records.........yes the closest I got was chassis 2501 MK4 1968..............this thing of my friends has early lucas generator and oil bath air cleaner all still in place original and working.

What exactly was the difference between MK3 and a MK4.
I know the Mk3 as I remember it
Fibre glass bonnet and front mud guards , single carby, single exhaust, slightly different instrument style to later MKs
Swinging pedant brake pedal and air valve accessed via bonnet.

Mk4 metal shorter bonnet treadle type brake pedal/valve mounted on floor.
Different engine cover and later style instruments etc.
Did the MK4 have dual master cylinders like the 6x6 or a single.
I know some Mk 4s had the dual exhaust system, but not all.
The odd MK 4 even had a twin carby motor from a 6x6 if nothing else was advailable.
Altenator and paper air filter which needed diiferent engine cover.

Am I correct so far???????

There you go. I'm tipping it got a new chassis.

Yes Mick you have nailed it and found that engine number in the AWM records which I couldn't find.
It all adds up..............Front end collision and a bent chassis rail.???????????????
The truck would have been only Four years old,so it's worth while doing a full rebuild with new chassis and cabin nose.
The mod plate is fully stamped out explaining the above.
Also it explains the mixture of early MK3 and later MK4 components.
Explains the lack of no 2500 chassis details in the records and no chassis number plate ever been fitted near radiator.
The current 2500 chassis number is not stamped all in a line, but as Three lines which is unusual.
Another thing which backs up the above is the engine rebuild date on the motor and disposal date of Army registered 170_415 being 1987 which would be a logical date for this truck to go to the SME museum at Moorebank.
We know the engine rebuild in 1985 was in Sydney.
Thanks Mick.
The truck is now so close to historic rego and the only thing now missing is the jerry can holder frame..........In time one will be found.
