3 middle aged, cynical fat blokes who own a D4, DS and RSS between them go to see the new D5.....................underwhelmed was the consensus [bigsad]

The D4 had both luxury and utility about it. The D5 only has the former.

The whole back end arrangement sucks (compared to the D4), what with the one piece tailgate and the sloping roof, narrowing sides and swept back top section of the door opening act to limit access to the rear.

This one being the $144k HSE. The ladies said it was the TD6 but you could swing a cat between the radiator and the front of the engine. We thought is must have been an SD4.

There does look to be a spot (no pics) on the LHS where a second battery could go (with some work).

I'm still not entirely convinced with this move by LR.
One the one hand: new models nearly always improve on old.
But everything I see, and read, points to this being more of a shopping trolley than the D4; and that's not what I want. Will it sell? Like hot cakes, no doubt.
For a reliable, touring, Offroad vehicle...I'm waiting a year or so...and then the New Defender (and the dark side) awaits!!!

I recon it has been designed for a market that is not really the D3/4 type of market.

I am the same, wait for the Defender,if it ever arrives, but then i wouldn't get the first of any model anyway.

There are always other brands........

I forgot to mention the ladies from the dealership said they had 50 orders for the HSE (as displayed) at $144k each.

Did you happen to notice what tyre size they had.

For that sort of money you can buy a demo RRS SDV6 HSE which I think I prefer.

I wish they would at least release pictures & some details of the new defender.

Looks like a Yuppie Toorak Taxi from the outside to me and the interior and dash set up is just plain "Butt Ugly" as far as I am concerned.
You can get a whole lot of REAL landrover for 144k [bigwhistle]

For those that were in the market for a RRS or a RR for sure.

To answer my own question
Called in to MLR today to ask few questions;
1. They have told me the following tyre sizes
19" = 255 X 60
20" = 255 X 55
This is good news to me any way as it means we should be able to fit BFG KO2 in 275 x 55 x 20 these will only be 20mm wider & 22mm taller thus legal in all states & a much better option than currently available on standard oem rims for a D4.
I believe this size also works on a current model RRS.

2. I priced up a D5 HSE with a few good options and it came to $128,000 this is obviously full RRP, the corporate plan will now provide 5 years free scheduled servicing.
Two of the big ticket options were sliding panoramic sun roof & advanced off road pack including ediff.

... we should be able to fit BFG KO2 in 275 x 55 x 20I hope they don't resonate on the new Disco as they do on my L322, both being monocoque with front and rear sub-frames. The L405's front sub-frame bolts directly to the body the same as the L322 so I suspect the L462's does too, but perhaps the L322's body is the culprit.

Best summary ever!

I had similar feelings on the looks when the AU Falcon came out and that didn't go well.

There is just a clean break from previous Disco styling that disappoints.

I had a look at it when it was in Geelong a couple of weeks back.

It's big! With a big bum.
A lot of technology in it. Some a bit over the top, but most pretty useful.
It has gone upmarket from the D3/ D4. I reckon the new Defender will slot in under it.
Electric everything, including the third row seats.
The big tailgate with the flap for the tailgate parties worked for me. I'd like to have seen a similar setup on the Disco Sport.
Some of the videos I have seen seem to show that the D5 is pretty capable off road.

While I was there another couple were looking, and placed a deposit on a new one.

It looks pretty capable and comfortable to me. But it is complex, and complexity costs to run and maintain.

Did I say it's big?

You do know that a 2.0 4 cylinder engine is going to be longer than a 3.0 V6 engine?

I wonder if they have done away with timing belts on the 4cyl engines?

That will be one less maintenance cost.

The ingenium engine uses a timing chain

Why doesn't it get the 225kW 700Nm V6 in the Velar and RRS?
Also why make the fuel tank smaller for the 4 cylinder?
Just two things that could help make a decision on which engine you'd buy...
I did have one on order, but cancelled, will keep the D4 for a couple more years....

Had a look at the HSE Luxury spec on Friday. Very nice fit and finish and now a RR by a different name. Interesting to note in this 4 cylinder version the battery is not in the engine bay. Not a lot of room for a second battery even under the bonnet of this one with a lot of plastic in the engine bay making up the crush zones as well. So looks challenging to find a spot to get a bracket in for the second battery as well. But room for a compressor if you need.

Will be keeping the D4 for as long as I can as I don't need a car. I reckon the market for low km D4 will be strong amongst us 4WD users

Graeme I let the salesperson find it which was interesting as an experience in product knowledge. Clearly 99% of purchasers don't care. As an ex road service manager for an auto club it is always something of interest. I reckon the second battery for these will end up being LifePO4 so it can fit under the folding seats. I had a decent look at them and with the electricals the look rather challenging to remove at this point. But I am sure there will be creative souls prepared to go where no one else has gone before them

Hi guys,
I was up in Lithgow Sat morning 9am driving down the main shopping street and spotted a white HSE 3.0 D5 parked!
Had to go up and have a sticky beak at it, spoke to the driver a LRA employee.
Getting some k's on it he said drove up from the Central Coast on the way to Parkes for the weekend.
5 on board with his wife in the third row to test them!
He loved the vehicle, but of course he should say that.
Looked smaller in the flesh to me.

The one we looked at (first post) had a ton of room in the engine bay for a 2nd battery. My hesitation in saying this is that there was no signage on the car we looked at and the ladies there had to call someone to ask, so I'm still not sure whether it was the 4 or the 6.

Most of the other ones in every other display have been TD6 HSEs - are you sure there were no badges on the boot? Also, if you have a photo of the engine bay, you could easily tell if it is the TD6 or not.

Went to MLR yesterday to see a D5 in the flesh.
It was a Santorini Black HSE Luxury with all the bells & whistles.
Very nice although I was disappointed with the middle row of seats - seemed to be less space & much lower than the my D4.
Not sure the grandchildren will like it as much.
The rear area is big & appears to be a fair bit bigger than the D4.
The good news is for those wanting a seven seater is that there is a full size spare under the car similar to D4.
Apparently the 5 seater will have the spare inside the car similar to the RRS.
Looks like you will get a 275 55 20 to fit in if upgrading tyres - these are only 22mm in diameter bigger than standard & same width as 22 inch wheel option.
Finally an option to get a decent LT AT onto a late model discovery with out replacing wheels.
These will also fit on a current model RRS.
The tow hitch is not what is pictured in the glossy brochures - looks very hayman reece like.
No cover, flat plug, and chain connection points are much easier to get at - I think it is an improvement for those that use trailers.
Unfortunately the coil sprung version misses out on the terrain response 2 and ediff.
Don't know what they were thinking - every other manufacturer now offer their version of terrain response & diff lock with steel springs!!
Pricing seems to indicate a well specced HSE will cost about $112,000 on the road.
I think this will improve as supply improves.
This was with a few goodies - TD6, TR2, Sunroof, metallic paint, on screen display.
It seems to be more viable to order HSE rather than speccing up SE which is different to D4.
Corporate program now extends servicing out to 5 years.
Will I buy one - subject to test drive - probably, although this one will be to order as I doubt there will be stock cars bought in with TR2 (ediff) & will wait a bit.
Six month wait apparently.

I reckon the entry model of the D5 is aimed at the 7 seat mum's bus market. Only the S gets coil springs, the others are all air. And the S also has no low-range gearing. TR2 is not even an option.

The car I would really want given today's specs is the HSE. We will see how things evolve over the next year or so. There were big changes from the 2015 to 2016 Discovery Sport.

No vehicle to have a look at here in Brisbane yet. Waiting for next month apparently.

I had the pleasure of driving a "all new" Discovery (HSE TDV6) around the Landrover experience in Solihull today....
Very capable off-road, a lot more refined than my 2.7 TDV and more electric gadgets than I could think of.
Cameras on side mirrors bring a new technique / style to wheel placement and probably my favorite "addition" after using for a while. Hill descent - silent, and whilst I've not been a fan of this on my vehicle, it took a lot of concentration to allow the car to "do its own thing" and its works very well.
Also drove a RR Vogue 4.4V8 diesel...OMG that engine is awesome.
Final thoughts: D5, very capable...still need to be convinced if it will replace my D4 as a tourer.
Cheers

Does it have recovery points like the D3/4?
