View Full Version : Which engine to swap??

I have been thinking about swapping my 3.9 for a 4.6 when it dies finally, in my 94 disco. But soon I can get my hands on a Holden Gen III 5.7 all alloy motor in next to new condition for next to nothing, my brother is dropping a 7Lt in his near new statesman and he will give me the "old" engine, I just have to ship it to the NT.

The 4.6 is a straight forward swap (if there is any such thing) but the 5.7 is much cheaper to buy and cheaper to get parts for when needed. Does anyone have any knowledge of comparisons between the two??

AAARGH I love desisions

cheers Blitz

gen 111 is ok but the torque is higher up rev range than I wanted, hence the HSV 215.

still be a top engine conversion though.

do it you know you want to,

Michael.

Oh yeah I do want to.

I'm a little worried about the power though he had it dyno tuned nad is getting a little over 300kw at the back wheels. Ok I wont have the flash chips or anything and being 4wd takes a lot more power, i just hope I don't start a chain event where I end kup replacing everything in the drive train.

BTW do you think I shoulld go with the holden gear box or the landy ZF?

cheers

This is not a technical matter.

It is theological 8O ....however in the absence of an appropriate forum (apart from the raves and rants section) I can paraphrase some lines from Monty Python's Life of Brian (the pre-Crucifixion scene):

"Foreign parts fitted to a Land Rover?...good...out of the door....line on the left..one cross each".

It will be a long queue.

A 7 Litre donk in a Statesman....now that is sacrilege

Go for it Blitz after all the LR V8 is a Buick

And to add to that I'll be *****D if I'm gonna take my Landrover factory fitted Isuzu out just to please anyone (almost 500,000k's and still all original), after all it's a GM engine so was the Rangie donk. 8O 8O All my restored Landrovers are Series Landies and all are fitted with stock standard engines just as the military had them, but even the military did fit Holden engines to a couple of variants i.e. review type vehicles and they were also fitted with auto trannies and were only 2 wd and if I could have scored one it would have been restored that way as well, cheers Dennis
PS is a TD5 a BMW engine for gods sake!!!!!

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>PS is a TD5 a BMW engine for gods sake!!!!![/b][/quote]

Hmmmm.... WHO designed the TD5? The correct answer is LAND ROVER

LR had almost finished building the "STORM" when BMW bought them out and agreed to fit them to the Rovers. So unless I am mistaken...my TD5 is a LR Engine....Not GM or a BMW!!! Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Gen III..... Hmmmm. American designed engine being flogged off as an Australian motor???? I remember the TV ads for it..... blah blah blah engine designed for Australian climate & environment.

I do realize that the Australian Army has Isuzu donks. When exactly were you able to walk into your local LR dealer and buy a defender with this motor in it? Isuzu engines were installed at the Aust. Armies request to make parts interchangeable with equipment they already have. As far as I know this is a common practice. I have also read the army thought the original LR donks were under powered. FFS most fridge containers on the back of trucks and trains have Isuzu motors. But you see THERMOKING written on the side.

Now I know bugger all about cars but ONE THING I DO KNOW.... You put a holden motor in your LR and you get an eternal date will Lucifier. It's in the bible, if you don't believe me...on page ummmmmm....... damn it I lost the page...

Dinty, you put the whole 500000ks on the clock of your army LR? I know a few army mech. that reckon they would never own a LR because of the Isuzu motor. They describe the Isuzu donk with lots of words that I can type but will just be replaced with, *******, **** & last but not least *************!!!!!

So peace Dinty, my orginal post was meant to be humorous as I am sure Blitz can appreciate. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

BTW Blitz if you do drop the big V8 in...post some pix of the 4 wheeled burnouts 8O 8O

G'day mate, no offence taken at all, my 110 is a civvie unit, it was one of the 12 that were released to the worlds motoring press back in 1984 ( Dec, I think) my vin plate is 11/84. The 110 had 198,000k's when I got it and it still goes well returns reasonable fuel economy for it's size and weight and some of the loads that it drags from time to time. Well I was always under the impression that the TD5 was BMW engine and having said that I never looked any further as the person who said it was used to deal in Landrovers nuff said!. From memory (geez thats a risk!!) I don't think you could ever buy a Defender with a 3.9 Isuzu engine they were fitted with Landrover engines either 4cyl Diesel or V8?> (or was that only an option in the Disco??) anyway over the years I've many different engines in landrovers from GM 6cyl to Ford 302 V8 and Diahatsu diesel so I'm really DAMNED to HELL as they say S*** happens cheers mate Dennis

So I think the general consensis is go for it but I will be spending eternity in hell.

Oh well all my Ex's are of the opinion that is where I'm going any way, God love em, and Satan thinks I would fit right in. So I'm probably buggered in that regard.

So if my brother does go with the 7lt. Which is a factory small block not a big block, apparently it is fitted to corvettes. (and he wants to supercharge it) but he is a fisherman with much more money than me. Then I will do it - but I will take plenty of photos compile it and post it.

Now all I have to do is convince him to make the swap soon.

Hmmm Blythe calling Satan ................... Heeeere Satan
