After a recent trip away my gearbox or transfer is whining like a b.... . Yes it has syntrans and syntrax in it.
It is a 03 model with 135K no mods, standard tyres etc..

My BIL has a disco 2 v8 with 160K on it that I have already pilfered some parts off so my question is should I borrow his gearbox and transfer to put in my 130, he still owes me some favours after getting his 110 off a very remote beach in S.A (stuck ignition barrel).

Apart from swapping the front input shafts and gear sticks, linkages is this a quick, simple and doable swap.
And yes the higher transfer ratios will be appreciated when i finally get a remap.
Ill do the clutch and flywheel at the same time just because.
Any thoughts or advice

I'm not sure about the ECM talking to the wrong gearbox?
you may get the same TD5 changepoints,, just with no slip :)
You out there Sierrafiery?

While i cant answer the questions you ask i can say i love the auto box in my 110 TD5. First low is still a little too quick if you do steep technical descents. Well it is for me.
Make sure you engineer the oil cooler properly and dont use hose clamps. The ZF operates at very high pressures and if you blow a line or use an inferior cooler then it will be a spendy mistake. A P38 cooler is the one to have.

The d2 box will need to be completely stripped and reassembled using the defender shift rails and forks and input gear etc. Transfer case is 20% taller high range too.

Id say it would be less hassle to repair what is wrong with yours personally.

The reason for the disco gearbox swap is time.
I use the car for work(builder) so I'm trying to minimize its downtime.
Is there a definitive way i can determine if its gearbox or transfer case issues ?

The gearbox won't whine when engaged in 4th gear. Swapping the transfer case is a 2-4 hour job so I'd try that first. Just remember to make two guide pins long enough to prevent seal damage in the front of the transfer case.
