Like every one else – I read the news. The “can you hear me?” phone scam has reportedly been prolific in the United States and the United Kingdom since very early in 2017.
Weeks ago I was interested to read that the phone scam had hit Australia’s shores.
I just had lunch with one of the Mackay police station’s Volunteer in Policing who received a “Can you hear me?” phone call at their home number on Monday April 24!!
What do you need to know? Victims receive an unsolicited phone call (business or home number) … after you answer, the scammer will simply say “Can you hear me?” several times. Most people say “yes”.
The scammer then ends the call. It is believed that the scammer is recording your “yes” response and that this recording is being used to authorise payments or charges – in your name!!! Good luck disputing or contesting the payment or charge after the event with a recording of your “yes” on file authorising it 🙁
If the scammer already has your mobile phone number and some sensitive identification information of yours… you may have some serious and legitimate reasons to be concerned!
We’re now sharing this post statewide as we believe it to be hitting many areas.
Our advice to combat this phone scam :

Spread the word – Share this information
If you receive a “can you hear me?” phone call – hang up – don’t respond!
If you did respond with a “yes” … alert your financial institution, begin to monitor your accounts closely .. and contact ID CARE

What can you do with a recorded 'yes'? No one seems to say.

I think I'm pretty safe .................... doubt if any court would interpret "**** off" as a commitment to purchase anything. :2up:

The vigilant wife has this very day found three unauthorized transactions totalling $400 on one of our accounts, so our bank has cancelled the card. Gotta be careful.

Can't say I've ever purchased something online by saying 'yes'.

Has anyone?!

On the phone, yes.
For telecom, gas and electricity supplied to the premesis.

Remember, when buying goods and services in Australia, these transactions are covered under Australian consumer law.

So, you will say Yes?

On the basis of all the information posted in this thread thus far, I have no reason to alter the way I answer the telephone.

So this scam has been going on for a few hours now. My guess is if it was real and could use the affirmative answer for profit the perpetrators have likely moved onto something else. Personally I couldn't be bothered answering my phone to anyone I don't know.

It appears that you went to the same course as me on how to answer the phone to nuisance calls.

Snopes says: No evidence that anyone has ever lost any money to this supposed scam. They can't show any link between someone saying 'Yes' and being billed anything.

Don't shoot the messenger. You may not get another message. Rely on Snopes, whom you seem to know well.

I reckon it'd be more fun to reply with ... "Can you hear me?" :p
I have my phone to reject 'unknown number' calls, so I'll probably never get one :(

Not a phone scam But I have had to block and delete about a dozen Bogus traffic infringement emails this morning.
Is anyone else getting these Bogus emails?

Its driving me nuts.
No traffic ones yet but every other try at viruses under the sun. I got about 20 yesterday and as quickly as I block sender they come up with another variation. Australia Post, which caught a mate as he was expecting a parcel and lost his hard disc, Google support, Whatsapp, Woolies Update, Fedex, Gmail, and lots of hijacked email addresses that we know, as well as I guess harmless ones offering sex, and Cailis.

Looks like someone in Russia has bought a list from Facebook, or Amazon recently seeing the increase.

Surely the ISPs should also be able to filter them out!

Without reading of this scam, my immediate reply would have been "no" - I mean, think about it, if I answer, I hear them.
I have equally quirky mates whom I've learnt to never tell them I'm selling anything - as a fake buyer ( them with disguised voice) will call.

Yep I am getting these. They say I have a traffic infringement of $xxx and I will be receiving it in the mail.
But I can view it now by clicking on the provided link.

The only thing I click is the delete button.
