Hi all
Have owned TD5 discovery since 2003 but am looking to buy a defender 130 with TD5 engine and ABS.
i believe the 2005 model 130 came out with ABS. Can anyone advise whether ABS can be retro fitted to pre 2005 models

It would be possible but a whole lot of work and expense for little benefit.

May I ask why you want this crappy Wabco ABS retrofitted in your car. I had nothing but issues with the modulator, the sensors and the system just loosing the plot into a High Country trip and I'm sure, I'm not the only one who had these issues. If I could legally get rid of the ABS, I would do it.

Cheers Joachim

Once sorted I find the system to be trouble free although it did take some getting sorted initially
I do have a switch to turn it off if it all gets cranky

To convert a vehicle would be a major task from what I can see you would need to replace the following

1) Swivel Pins and CVs on the front
2) At least the hubs on the back if you couldn't modify the Salisbury housing maybe the whole housing (don't think this would be necessary)
3) Entire ABS loom and computer
4) 4 very expensive wheel sensors
5) 1 very expensive and troublesome modulator
6) Possibly the brake master cylinder
7) Many brake lines
8) Dash board to be modified to accept lights
9) Not sure how insurance companies and authorities would deal with the change

Plus all the other things I have overlooked

As Jbe said I would take mine off if I could do it legally but it is pretty trouble free.
Its not the most sophisticated system and the Pumas haven't advanced much either last time I looked the ECU on my TD5 had the same part number as the earlier Pumas
