Vehicle: 1992 Disco 3.5V8EFI manual.

Problem: excessive front right wheel movement.... taper bearing on swivel joint?

With the wheel jacked off the ground, grabbing the tyre at 11 and 5 o'clock, there is too much in-out movement.

I've checked the end float of the wheel and it seems fine (ie. hub bearings properly retained). steering linkages seem ok - excess movement is wheel relative to swivel housing.

Related problem? swivel housing is not holding oil - was run dry by previous owner (must have been awhile ago as there was no oil leaking when I looked at it - dry! - started ****ing out when I tried to fill it!)

Question: I've guessed at a collapsed bottom taper bearing on the swivel joint - does this sound right?

Is it possible that the CV joint itself will still be ok?

Regards,

Andrew

i think you will need to pull it apart to find out.....
if it is the bearings....replace both top and bottom....
but get them from a bearing place.......should be cheaper than genuine......

make sure its not something stupid like loose wheel nuts.......

Hi Find out if you have the late top pin and bearings, they look flimsy and are crap. If so replace with the older type much stronger and will last longer, I cant think when they started using the new type bearing. but ive had a few which have broken. also use 1 shot grease instead of oil in the hub.Its usually the top bearing that has the problem , your cv should be fine.

it was the bottom swivel-joint bearing. both top and bottom replaced, and I had the wheel bearings done while it was apart.

Cheers,
