View Full Version : Not only Defender prices going up?!

Aussie Muscle Car prices have started to climb again, particularly for lovely original, or properly restored examples.
There have been two early Monaros, one HK & another HT, sell for $300k+, and the latest I've seen on AMCS is a nice Sebring Orange HT350 at $325K,...not bad for a car which sold new for under $4K!
Of course I'm aware that some on here aren't interested in the shortly to be built HSV Commodore W1, with a RRP of $170K. Hoever, some of these "orders at this stage" are already changing hands at $250K+...If the current trend continues, as it has for the last few years (some actually RIDICULOUS prices) I predict they will be an excellent "investment"!
But this is nothing compared to what's going on in Europe where a Ferrari 250GTO originally priced by Enzo at Six thousand five hundred pounds recently sold for thirty eight MILLION pounds.
And finally Bob Jane would cry if he knew what his lightweight E Type sold for in the States recently,....it would be enough to solve his financial issues many times over!

Interestingly, nondescript versions of classic Mercs seem to be reasonably priced and plentiful. Anyone for a W108?

Not necessarily so, who is placed to say,..."what something is worth"?..I reckon the market decides that.
You know as well as I do, anything is worth "äs much as someone will pay". The trick is to know "what" someone will pay, when it comes to collectables.
And who can tell the future,...Ferraris have been going up "for ever".
I can remember, in the seventies, when in Melbourne, the prime space to see your used car was in the Saturday Age. Anyway there was a Ferrari advertised there for well over 6 months, but it eventually sold.
Subsequently, several years later I was talking to a friend of mine who had several classic cars & I asked him how he could own them. He said, well there was this Ferrari advertised in the Age, (well under $10K) which nobody wanted so I bought it. Very shortly after buying it, He researched its history & found out it was one of only 7 made in RHD,....and it became worth,..a FORTUNE,....got him started very well,...He now owns several Bentleys, Ferraris, & various other exotics,.....and I doubt He'd loose dollars on any of 'ém.
Unfortunately, I've never had the "judgement" to be really successful in my vehicle "transactions",..no matter, I've loved the cars I've owned!...that love not ever being reflected in my bank balance!
All is good, Pickles.

As I said previously still stands...
A car is worth nothing because they made a few - it's just a lump of metal.
Humans add a ridiculous value to it based on:
No one else has one
It was what Dad had
I wanted one as a child
The builder was "unique"
In much the same way a picture of a Can of Soup isn't worth more then the Canvas and Paint used to make it.

Thats a bit overly simplistic as true as it may be, its not what happens in real life though. If they made millions of them then they wouldn't hold much value, exclusivity creates demand and demand dictates the value.

Some people think cars are worth more if they are shiny.
Some people think cars are worth more if they are weathered.
I reckon it's personal preference. VE Commodores don't do much for me but a VR/VS commands my interest.

Funny how it goes.
I had an XA coupe 351, FMX auto, 9 inch blah blah blah. paid $1500 for it in 1986
Burnt fuel at an astounding rate didnt handle despite its suspension mods and so on ... loved it but would never pay the money some are asking for what is essentially wreckage of these things let alone the apparent "good" ones. (ford/Holden pretty much irrelevant)
And the good ones are no different to mine which was "good" at the time, neither are they particular unique
Sentimental value indeed for the most part and only a handful with historical "race" pedigree to justify a premium.
Id like to have it still though, I would sell it in heartbeat and pay off the house.
But if I had all the cash I ever wanted, id probably buy something just for sentimental reasons.
Bah.. now I'm reminiscing my old cars.
What a contradictory post...red wine [bigrolf]

Yes, XA Coupes are worth very large dollars these days,...if you can find one,.....which is extremely difficult. Some might say that the Bathurst Edition Cobra Coupe is the ultimate,..one sold last week for $400K...once again,..pretty good appreciation.

A friend of a family friend had one. He sold it to someone in the UK for $1mil. It was about the time when The Flying Scottsman was out here. He got a photo of it with the train at the North Melbourne yards before it was loaded into the container.

There's a story.
Back in 1930, they raced them. Against, amongst others, the Germans. The Mercs also had superchargers but better ones than the English.
So, the English ran some naturally aspirated Bentleys in the race.
So,the race started and one of the supercharged Bentleys flew out in front. The Mercs gave chase. Pop! The Bentley's motor went. Then another one of the supercharged Bentleys flew out in front. The Mercs gave chase. Pop! That Bentley's motor went. So, another one of the supercharged Bentleys flew out in front. The Mercs gave chase. Pop! That Bentley's motor went.
So, this went on all through the race. By the last few laps all the supercharged Bentleys were either out of the race or very shagged. The Mercs were pretty shagged to. No match for the unstressed naturally aspirated Bentleys.
Bentley won the race.
I love that story. That is why I'd love a 1930 Bentley. Supercharged, of course. Rarity does come into it.

Last year I was returning from Yass, and around Cudal I spotted a strange looking car ahead of me. I eventually caught up with it and passed it between Molong and Wellington, and as I passed it I was able to identify it as one of these, although I was not able to get a good enough look to be sure whether it was blown or not, I think not. Could have been either a 4.5 or a 3.5. He was travelling well, but at about 95km/h, The thing that struck me was how high the big steering wheel is set - the driver was virtually looking through it.

SENSATIONAL video on the Bentley "Barn Find",...what a car, one of the best short clips I've seen. And ya know what, the owner of that car would easily get his money back. As we used to say, "Damn Fine Machinery."
Didn't have time to watch the Tim Birkin u tube, but I know all about him,...those boys lived, & drove, in a great era.
Thanks, Pickles.
NB: Forgot to mention, if you or anyone else is into this sort of stuff, old/vintage/classic/road/race cars/drivers etc, do any of you read the U.K. "Octane" magazine. Available monthly here, nearly 300pages, only $10.50,...takes me ages to read it. There is some REALLY good stuff in it....just remembered, MOST IMPORTANTLY, the Editor owns an early Landrover, can't remember which one, .....and the Deputy Editor, Mark Dixon, who also writes in LandRover Monthly, owns several.

Best I could afford was a Mini.
A friend at work told me yesterday that his first car after uni was a Torana XUI. His first job was in Cairns, but his girlfriend was in Brisbane, so once a month he would drive to Brissie for the weekend, a 3600 km round trip. He would leave Cairns about 4pm Friday and be in Brissie for breakfast with the girlfriend, and leave after lunch on Sunday to return. No radar in those days, fortunately for him.

I was told that part of reason prices are going up is sheer number of very wealthy people in world is rapidly increasing (think China/India) with numbers in the millions. Of these some are interested in cars and with money no real object they can spend whatever. Just watched Motor yacht "infinity" sail past put into perspective how wealthy some are. Not me unfortunately

So for the old cars, plan is to get an average one, then install this "Barn Find Kit" (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/-/172651077364) to drive up the resale value on your favourite car.
Gives it that instant look of being lost in a barn somewhere for 30 years... complete with dust, spiders and flat tyre tool.

Might be more money selling beer . Go out now maybe $6 for a can of factory beer, but $10 plus for craft beer . Since this is all that is available when going out the " old cans " are a good return.

Have noticed there is a rhythm to prices of cars which are in the minor classic section. These tend to peak in price and demand then fall away again.
Seems to be connected to people buying the cars they always wanted as kids but could never afford. They reach an age income where they can realise these dreams. Their interest pushes up demand and prices for a decade or two then the demand and prices fall away again as the age profile moves on.
During this time some cars will create their own critical mass which keeps demand going most do not as the people who created the demand move on.
