View Full Version : Help me make a decision!

Hi all,
I'm hoping that you guys can help me make a decision.
Today I picked up a 92/3 RRC from a guy who had been bugging me to take it for nearly a year. Free of charge.
When I did check it out almost a year ago I originally thought it was in pretty good nick, but after having it home I'm now thinking it's not that great and would be a bit too much work. I'm not overly keen on another project when I'm still fighting to finish the ute conversion.
The reason the owner wanted to give it away was because it had been sitting for a couple of years due to it having a no spark issue, which most of us here know is usually from the ignition module. The car is straight gas (no good for here), fresh stroked 3.9lt(4.6 or something), a Vogue SE and he has spent some serious money on it in the time leading up to it stopping, including a new viscous coupling and drive chain.
My initial thoughts were to turn it into a duel cab. But then I thought to repair it then pass it on. But now I'm thinking parting it out which brings it own challenges, as I live near Katherine NT, far from anything.
There are some nice bits on it. I'm thinking about taking the winch bullbar, the roof lining and maybe the cruise control.
So I am in a pickle.
I also wonder how much of it could be swapped to my 89 RRC.
Please help me responsible, I really have no room for another project.https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/05/667.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/05/668.jpg
Thanks in advance,

Maybe.. if you can buff surface rust.

What exactly makes it feel as though it is not worth the work it needs? Rust in the usual places? Chassis damage/rust? Destroyed interior?
Easy enough to get rid of the gas, get it running and go from there? You might not feel like you have the time/money/patience for another project but if you give up on it easily you could be missing out. It doesn't owe you much so far!

That looks like an ARB deluxe winch bar - be keeping that!
Rear bar dont look hot.
if ya not keen on a project but know what your doing, get it running and service it, clean it up best you can and sell her.

I haven't had much of a chance to check the usual spots for rust and the body is a bit rough, could possibly be polished a bit. The console area around the radio is in pieces and the timber around the cabin needs to be redone.
There is a pet barrier in the back which I will be removing and as mentioned, the bull bar will come off.
I guess if it does start and run it will make it more promising. Il remove the ignition module set up as per this forum and see if that gets it going. It's straight gas so all of the ecu has been eliminated, making the diagnosis a little easier.
I think if I gave it a wash I would be less turned off.
How hard would it be to sand back and redo the timber panels do you think.

Just stick her in the shed ... it won't go to waste... YOu'll ever pull bits from it to keep "others" going ... or get it on the road in time :) I'm not very good at selling cars, so I wouldn't part it out or sell it :)

Shane, see that's the thing, I live in defence housing and don't have the luxury of a shed or mass storage area. It's also frowned upon to have untidy yards.
After a quick look last night I found some rust in the passenger front foot well and judging by the "pass" on the front window from somewhere in NSW, it has spent a bit of time in the sand.
But what I did discover is that so far it looks like they only removed the petrol tank and all other sensors and ecu are still there.
I don't know, I'm still at odds. the state of the interior isn't helping.
Am I right to believe that the 93 model had 23 spline axles? And bigger front brakes?

93 will have vented front brakes, calipers are the same.
It will also only be 10 spline axles

Er . . . I might take it! It wouldn't be too hard to ship it down the road to Derby. See what you think.

Asking these guys to guide you away from another project would be like asking long grassers to help you give up your drinking problem! You know where this is heading! (No offense to long grassers and not implying you have a drinking problem - LRover problem maybe[smilebigeye] - I've looked for remedial help in Darwin for myself, but there is none).
Sounds like you should tackle the ignition problem. You still have NT plates so rego with a sympathetic mechanic should not be an issue.
I'm going to assume your vehicle originally had a steel petrol tank. If you decided to go back to go back to petrol I have two tanks you could have for free.
The first is steel from an '84 RRC, otherwise sound but for the rusted drain hole which would need a patch; also need to get new pump, bits of rubber pipe etc. The second is a poly tank out of a '98 petrol Discovery; it'll fit in place of the steel tank, but you would have to alter the tank mounts, get a pump etc (I've fitted a TD5 tank into my '84 RRC Isuzu, still figuring out the plumbing). Then of course is getting it to you cost effectively.
Alternatively, get one of your servicemen with a truck going to Darwin to dump it at my place...actually, forget I suggested it...got to resist...got to go back to the 10 other projects waiting at the shed...back off Davo, precious is mine, isn't it master?!

'93 RRC ran a plastic tank, same as D1 to 1998.

... IF it has a NEW Viscious Coupling and drive chain... in the transfer case, it's good for at least 150K+... and that alone is worth its weight in Unobtanium. - a dead VC (locked) was the prime reason for divorcing the Lady Sarah. (Went to a good home, where she'll be getting an LT230 transplant)
Seriously, proper marine epoxy on the woodwork - not cheap varnish - will fix most of the wood trim.
EDIT:- being a plastic fuel tank, if it leaks from the top fittings, it will be subject of that recall.... My '94/5 Classic got a NEW tank under warranty, only a few years ago. Check VIN with a LR dealer.
- More info to keep you undecided !!!:twisted::twisted:

Hey guys,
It's been a long week, trying to work out what to do and all.
I think I have decided that it's not for me and I would like to pass it on to someone who could use it, whether for parts or to get going again.
I will be removing the bull bar and the animal cage/divider thingo, but can fit an alloy bull bar back on if it is a issue.
I would have liked to grab the wood off of the dash and console, but it's best to stay with the car. I would have also liked to grab the rear tail shaft for my ute project(maybe swaps). There isn't anything else of use to me without pulling it right apart.
So if anyone would like it for what ever, let me know. I could get it to Darwin easily and probably as a back load as far south as PT Augusta.
Again, I really don't have the space for it to sit as a parts car.

You are a strong man. I reckon it would be best loved in Derby!

If you can get it there, no probs.
It breaks my heart as I know there is potential, but with no storage and a possible move at the end of the year, just can't do it.

Davo would be the obvious choice at this stage, if he is keen, and can figure a cost effective way of getting it. Sounds like he would make better use of it than me.
As a last resort I can take it just from the point of saving it as a whole, provided it costs me next to nothing. It will sit outdoors with the other 3 RRC I have that are primarily as spares for my Isuzu project (the 4th RRC).
While I don't have a particular interest in V8s the burble does sound nice. I may be tempted in the future (if the Isuzu project ever finishes) to skill up on them and repair one of the four which is petrol EFI.
In regard to another one of the four I have, the previous owner seemed to be setting up as a street racer (he passed away), has what I believe is a Ford Windsor 305 with Edelbrock induction, 3 speed auto, but unfortunately just on gas, runs nicely, gets a rare run around the property, but not registered (has some peculiarities which might cause rego issues, but at this stage I'm not bothered to investigate) and which means I can't just drive down the public road to keep the gas topped up. This is also another potential project for me.
Try and get your next posting to Darwin so you can work on it as your vehicle at weekends at my place (and fix my ones while your at it) :)

Uh oh! I haven't mentioned this to the wife . . . but isn't that what makes marriage so much fun? :bat:
I shall endeavor to get a freight quote this week and will let you know. If I can get it organised, we can figure out what you want to take off of it. Can you get it to a freight yard?
I know how you feel. I'd love to save everything I see but you have to be careful. Everybody knows about that single guy, living on a bush block full of old car wrecks, which he will never sell . . . and I think we all know how things got to that point!

Davo I'll send you a PM.
Workingonit, if Davo isn't keen/can't do it, I can get it to East Arm in Darwin, so from there I guess we can work something out if that is something you would like to do. Also, you say you have three other RRC's sitting around, one of these wouldn't happen to have a rear propshaft that could be negotiated for?

Hi Konradical.
If the mode of transport to Darwin allows roll on roll off, and is the last loaded, and the driver could be persuaded, then it could on route be rolled off in the large parking area at Noonamah, where I could then tow it home quite easily.
I live on the Stuart Hwy in Humpty Doo/Noonamah, about 40kms from centre of Darwin, so if it goes to East Point then it will likely cost me $160 or a bit more to get it carted back out here.
Regarding the rear drive shaft. I don't want to part with any full metal jobs. Not sure, but may have a donuted one plus diff drive flange - the grass has grown over one of my 'spares piles' this wet, so not sure at this stage.
Guessing by Davo's last post the vehicle may have already found a happy home?

Yes, I think we have it sorted. I've also got a few driveshafts handy, so one has been offered. Good to have you as a back-up, though, as I hate to see an old Land Rover of any sort homeless.

Just to finish this up, the poor old thing was delivered yesterday. It is beyond getting back onto the road, (it's probably possible but it would be a huge job), so it's a parts car. I really think Kon made the right decision to move it on, and full marks to him for giving it away instead of just taking some bits off and dumping it at the tip, which many people would have done. (Though given the low demand for these things up here, sometimes there's no choice.) What I paid for freight was probably more than I would have paid for it if it was just sitting around the corner, but old Rangies don't turn up much any more, so it was worth taking the chance.
So a big Thank You to Kon, and as for me, I've got my work cut out!

Yes, in Oz they're at that low point cars reach before they are "rare and collectible"! Which is, however, what they certainly are in Britain these days.
