Today was calm, bright and dry...a rare combination over here. I managed to get some photos.
The last one is of the main road home. Bear it in mind when you are stuck in city traffic....

Bang on Sherlock.
It was early morning and everything just looked so well. Even the lakes looked blue instead of the usual brown from the peat hills around. Has'nt rained for a while so everything is very dry. There's been a few hillfires one very bad one going on at the moment. This was taken earlier today but it has gotten very bad now covering a large area.

That sort fire is a problem here where it's common. Over there I imagine it's a major drama.

Not quite that far Ian. Anyway, these days I restrict myself to the Ports of Sydney, unless someone with lots of loot gets down on hands and knees and begs.

Lovely. Brings back memories.
I had never thought about bushfires in Ireland, since I just assumed it was wet and miserable every day, but I can see it could be a problem. Do they happen often?

To much green, to much water, water is not muddy red, no red dirt or gum trees.

No wonder all Irish are mad!

The fires do a lot of damage to wildlife. Some maybe accidental or due to carelessness but some are started deliberately.
Farmers burn the heather to promote new grass for hillsheep. It is very hard to find the guilty party.

I've been wearing shorts yesterday and today, so yes it is quite balmy here. Must be in the mid to high teens.
Yesterday I saw some visitors driving a car with the top down....both had on wooly hats.
I'f I want to experience a drive with the wind in my hair I go for a drive in the 88...with the doors, windows and flaps CLOSED.[smilebigeye]

Great stuff Spud, brings back some great memories for me, beautiful area up there, I stayed up there for about 4 nights at the Local youth Hostel in Gleann Cholm Cille run by Patrick O'Donnell, one of those nights was at a B&B between Donegal Town and Killybegs.

Out of interest what's the name of the Lough?

The long one is "Lough Fadda" (which means Long Lake) while the circular one is "Crun Lough".
The sea inlet is Lough Swilly.
The little white building seen on a height at the back of the horse shoe shaped bay (Crummies Bay) is part of Dunree Fort which was a British gun emplacement camp. Now it is a museum.

Order a Jamieson or a Bushmill in the wrong pub and you'll see just HOW mad. Good thing they like Aussies.

We went to a couple of tasty distilleries, but I cant remember the names and I'd have to go home to check the labels.
I do remember the car reading the temperature outside as down to minus five several times (it was December).
Here in Brissie its 12-24 today and people are saying it's getting cold!

Here is a map from NASA showing the fires here. The second map is a close up to show the most northerly fire. I live bang smack in the centre of the peninsula that has the fire.

So you'd be near Carndonagh would you?
And the fire around Raghtin More?

Congratulations once again Sherlock. I live in Carndonagh and the fires were indeed on Raghtin Mor. You definitely missed your calling. Ever thought of getting a Deerstalker and an assistant with a medical back ground?

Normal service has been resumed today. The temperature has dropped and the rain has fallen for the first time this month. If I'd wanted to take photo's on the hills today I'd need to borrow some photographic equipment from NASA or the FBI! As it was I had my flask of tea and victuals sitting at a cairn in the cloud, wind and rain earlier. You gotta love Summer!!!!

I've got a Herringbone Tweed cap made in Ireland and a Magnifying Glass with LEDs in it made in China. There could also be some form of Pipe out in the shed. Will that do?

G,day Spudfan! The following is an interesting insight to parts in your direction. I have not been to Athlone Castle, but have been around the Shannon River. A little bit further to the south west, Bunratty Castle and Durty Nellys bar on one occasion. sláinte
