Gday again to all. I have rejoined aulro again as it seems my last subscription was cancelled.
I have found aulro a very useful resource, especially last year as my family and I were on tour for all of 2016.
I have a 2010 110 and my wife and 3 young kids clocked over 42000 kms on our round and through Australia trip.
We live on the NSW Central Coast and try to get out & about when possible.
Anyways this is just a quick Gday and a couple of pics from the big lap. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/05/582.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/05/583.jpghttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/05/584.jpg

Welcome back, Colmore. Am guessing that diff-out wasn't part of routine maintenance. So what happened?

Gday!
Sorry I'm not very good at this forum thing - I've just noticed your replies today [emoji15]
Yeah that diff was a funny one - (not really funny haha) I installed some ATP diff guards and destroyed them both in the first 18000kms of our trip. They don't like corrugations either! Apparently ATP have improved their design now.
I rolled into Alice Springs from the West MacDonnels via the Mereni Loop at dinner time, hopped out of the truck to be met by the unmistakable acrid smell of diff oil. There was diff oil all over the place and the camper, so I had a quick look underneath. There was still oil dripping on the road, which, in this case seemed like a good sign, & I was a little tetchy, so I decided to go and eat pizza with my family and calm down.
1hr later there was still oil dripping out, so I figured there must be some in there still and risked driving the 5 ks to the big 4 where we set up just on dusk. Early next morning I had a closer look and pulled the filler plug out; I couldn't feel oil with my finger, but the zip tie dipstick showed a little.
The rear diff gaurd bolts into 2 threaded holes on the side of the diff housing and it seems one of these holes had a fissure in the casting. A tiny hole opened up behind the bolt and the oil forced the loc tited 11mm HT bolt to undo itself. It took 18000kms of rough roads to show itself!
I dropped the oil out and there was about half a coke can [emoji51] The oil around the casing smelled very burnt so I thought the diff may well be shot. I took the axles out, stripped the diff and found all was ok!!!!! Apart from some new seals, gasket sealant and oil and a bit of dirty work, she had escaped injury. Considering it was a 39° day, my whole setup weighed in at 5.2t and the Mereni Loop was rated 2 out of 10 at the time, I felt quite blessed really!!
(Big 4s don't really like you working on your car in their parks though [emoji849])
After Alice we headed back into the W Macs and free camped by the Fink river for a week, then down the old Ghan route into the Fink Desert. Then Mt Dare and across the Simpson.
40,000 kms later that diff is performing fine.

Gday Rob.
I was pretty happy with it all told, although I did have a turbo fail and a few little issues.
I installed the BAS remap at 60,000kms and at 90,000 or so the turbo started over boosting. Fortunately I was in Adelaide so I drove straight to Triumph Rover spares and they diagnosed a damaged turbo. On pulling it down I found 2 fins bent, which damaged the variable vain setup and put the unit out of balance; if I'd been in the bush & kept driving I may well have had bits of turbo through my engine!
I got a lm turbo off a wreck for 2k inc new silicone hoses and bolted it on - been fine ever since.
The sheet metal brake shields on the rear both let go at different stages from metal fatigue and caused the ABS to malfunction. I loaded a manual onto my laptop & phone before we left, so that helped me sort that one. The busted sheilds dislodged the wss a tiny bit and confused the TC/ABS - I removed the sensor, cleaned it and pushed it back in; no more issues. When the 2nd plate failed I was on The Gibb in sandy ground and the big girl rolled sideways off the jack! Fortunately I always place a wheel under the chassis, otherwise I'd have been dead [emoji51]
I upgraded the intercooler when I did the remap but retained the standard radiator, something I'd likely upgrade if I was keeping her. She didn't get too hot, but at 5.2t (inc camper trailer) it's a big load for a 2.4!
I averaged 16.5 l/100 for the whole 42000km trip and when we did the Simpson, Fink, Tele Track, etc without the trailer I averaged under 10 l/100 which I was really happy with.
If you have any other questions I can pm you my phone number Rob.

Say 3 Our Father's and 3 Hail Mary's
Then go out and kill a few more people and come back for your next confession
Anyway that's what you get in Sicily if you are in the Mafia...!!!
