View Full Version : Gumtree.....rumors are true

I just listed my 130 (https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/moriac/cars-vans-utes/1996-land-rover-defender-ute/1147447406) on Gumtree, this is the first vehicle I've listed on there.
The rumors are true about the stupid offers you get and the idiots you have to deal with, but having said that, it does look like it's sold within two days of listing (pending cleared payment) so shouldn't complain too much. We'll see if this payment actually shows up in my account [biggrin]

Cheers, Murray

If the buyer is on an oil rig, or in the defence force of any kind and hasnt seen the vehicle in person then it hasnt sold and i wouldnt be handing over my bank details.

Let me do you a favour, I'll take it off your hands for half the advertised price.

Oh, and when I turn up after we've agreed on a price, I'll give you two thousand less.

I just ignored the lowballers and moved on.

Another car I am selling is advertised as "negotiable". One enquiry asked "What are you asking?" He found it difficult to deal with my answer of "Make me an offer." Eventually he said "Four hundred." "Yes." I replied. Never heard from him again.

Yep, buyers are a funny lot. But so are sellers.

There not rumors :bat:.
I will never advertise on there ever again .
And dont worry i have dealt with as many dreamers and spankers on evilbay but at least they are slightly more accountable[bighmmm]

I've sold quite a few things on there lately and have been happy enough. I've had a lot of the usual lowball and swap offers but depending on my mood I either don't reply or reply with the original listed price. If they call and ask for my best price I just respond with the listed price. If they call to ask for information I tell that at the start I'm not negotiable on price.

I've had people progressively increase their offers but my latest buyers have just turned up with the cash. I don't give out addresses or meeting points until they are on their way and I don't alter my schedule or change my day for people that tell me they are coming at some future date or time.

The last buyer got bonus extras for not stuffing me around.

Yep, I had a couple of international texts and some low ball offers, all ignored.
The good news is, a guy from Melbourne has made a bank transfer for the asking price and sent me remittance advice. Once I see it actually in my account he will pick up the car.
But, it's still not sold til it's sold, so we'll wait for the money to appear before celebrating [biggrin]

Cheers, Murray

Ditto.
The last buyer did turn up with 10% less but begrudgingly found the extra in a ATM when I said "No sale."
I did give him "extras".

I do negotiate with those who want to. I give them my negotiable (advertised) price and my non-negotiable price. Those that have bought have always paid the second price I give them.

Oh, but I have had some loopy loonies. One fellow turned up and offered me $10 less on a $200 item. "I'll sell it to you tomorrow for $190 but today it's $200." At first he smiled because he got the price down, then he paid the $200.
Sometimes it's not worth the time and petrol.

The only thing I tried to sell on gum tree I ended up pulling the add .
It was a forklift......a late model one , but had a hard life and a blown up transmission.....it wasn't worth fixing.
It was advertised scrapping for parts.
everyone who contacted me wanted to buy the whole thing, but they were based in another state, buy sight unseen, give me your bank details, all who rang me were foreign sounding etc .....it all became too hard.
I ended just pulling the diesel motor out of the thing to use later and getting cash money for 5 tonne of scrap metal....a lot easier

All you blokes complaining about a free online marketplace where you can advertise for free to sell your stuff - do you remember when you used to have to pay to put 3 lines in the local classifieds [biggrin]

Y'all make me laugh [biggrin][biggrin][biggrin]

I have bought a Landy on there and met a nice genuine Landy-man...have bought other cars...both of my daughters cars...have bought things like concrete mixers etc...and sold them again on there, sold cars on there...other than the occasional ridiculous text or email, which I ignore...no problems. I would rather use Gumtree than pay other sites, or as a previous poster alluded to, have to pay a newspaper like it used to be....so LONG LIVE GUMTREE.

Be very careful on GT, cash only or money orders. Coupla years back I used gumtree to sell guitar parts and a RAT pedal, pre-chinese made RAT (ie made in usa).

I soon got a message to buy from a well known country & western artist. Yeah right. My scam meter went off the dial because I thought no way C&W players would want a Ramones-grunge-etc type pedal. He later rang up and we talked. Not knowing much about Tamworth of the C&W stuff, off the top of my head I established he was who he said he was by asking about the country radio station at Kempsey (the quirky location of it). He knew the answer and that was good enough for me! Deal went thru ok.

Sold my mum's Alfa Romeo on GT and met a very nice young couple and no idiots then bought fishing gear off GT and ended up going to the vendor's restaurant for my 30th. wedding anniversary! (Made the waders a bit more expensive!) Gumtree has been good to me. Peter.

Gumtree is still the worst but I had another good one on Ebay a few weeks ago...

I was selling a scanner. Buy It Now price of $100. I also allowed buyers to make offers.

The first offer came in. $10. Naturally I rejected that. The second offer (same guy) $15. I then blocked him from making further offers and in the end he opted to pay the full price of $100 with the Buy It Now option.

Minutes later I get a message asking for a discount: "...I'm on a pension and can't afford this at the price you're selling..." kind of thing. I reply with a simple "Tough tits. If you can't afford it, you shouldn't have said you'll buy it." although not quite as blunt as that.

This was followed up with a request for some free AA batteries. Again I said no but I did offer to chuck in a USB lead instead. This appeared to shut the idiot up and I posted the scanner the next day even though I knew the guy was going to be trouble. I even opted for the tracking and for the parcel to be signed for as I knew the buyer would try and claim the parcel never arrived.

Two days later, as I expected the trouble started. I get a message along the lines of "This is a piece of ****. It doesn't work. I've thrown it in the rubbish. Give me a refund!"

I replied with the clarification that the sale was non-refundable, that the device did work as I had tested it the night before I posted it but it he was truly unhappy I would give him a refund once I had got it back.

Again, he angrily stated that the scanner was a piece of ****, that he'd thrown it away and wanted a refund. Again I said a refund would only be issued if he sent the scanner back. This went on for a few more days but I stopped replying after the second message. He eventually left negative feedback which in all honesty I'd rather have than have to deal further with this numpty.

Negative feedback lasts 12 months, this poor guy is going to be a moron all his life.

My lad kept looking at your car, although out of his price range I don't think it was him who offered a $1,000 [bigsmile1]

That really limits your market , have only had 1 negative experience in all my time using online markets.

Congrats on the move, here's the blurb. Its a great view there too. I used to eat my lunch there once a fortnight on my run to Coffs and back (out of Newcastle).

One thing I'll say about fleabay: last year I purchased a robot vacuum for SWMBO for a too good to be true price. Well, of course we al know about the "too good to be true rule". So it turned out. The item was supposedly in Sydney. p pal kept saying that the seller hadn't taken the money, until about three days later. The seller's P P ID was in Chinese. The seller did not communicate with me at all, and fleabay informed me he was no longer a registered user. So, to cut a long story short, I applied to get my money back. No problem, got reimbursed the full amount in a couple of days. That is why I prefer fleabay.

I've had some good success on Ebay with smaller items but had none flogging a Landie. Nutters came out the woodwork. Most stuff I sell via carsales and have had good prices paid..... but some of the driving has scared the crap out of me! [bigsad] Unbelievable how they keep their licences. Although living near the police academy maybe it's not suprising seeing the standard of the instructing.
I now ask for their driving licence before letting anyone near my cars. If they object they don't get to drive that's all there is to it.
