Hi Everyone,
I decided to do an oil change on my 2013 Defender 2.2 today as It will be clocking up a few kilometres in the next month. I purchased all the Land Rover bits needed from MLR at a good price.
I was surprised that when I removed the plastic screw on filter housing bowl and removed the filter element I found that it just sits in the bowl. There is an internal support assembly in the bottom of the bowl with what looks like a bypass assembly or similar, but there is nothing that actually seals the element top and bottom that I could see. From what I could see, oil can weep past the top and bottom of the element. Traditional screw on filters have internal seals which forces the oil through the filer in one direction. Am I wrong about the lack of sealing? I even looked at the old oil element to see if any seals had stuck to it and accidentally removed. I must admit that I will be happy if somebody can point out that I am wrong with what I have seen and my assumption that it can bypass oil.
If they do just sit there, how efficient are they, especially with a 20,000 Km service interval?
This is probably a question for those who do regular oil changes on the 2.4 and 2.2 Defenders with the plastic bowl, cartridge type oil filter elements. I hope someone can educate me about its operation.
I look forward to hearing any responses and thanks in advance.
