i believe it has to do with the engine fitted...
IIRC the td5 snorkel goes on drivers side

The snorkel uses the existing air intake on the wing, so yes, it depends which engine is fitted:

200tdi left
300tdi & TD5 right

300tdi and Td5 on right side.

200tdi on left side.

Why this is, is another question.

It all depends which side the airbox is on. Shortest route to the air intake with least work.

Good theory, but my intake is on the right, and the air box is positioned on the left side of the engine bulkhead. (South African Build).

Due to different markets this was done.
It all came about when the GM of LR in the UK was using one down in Scotland. He was gunning it quite hard up a steep rocky slippery incline when his Winch ****** in his kilt suddenly had it ripped right off him as the Defender went past. The suction on the intake caused this to happen and due to all Scotts walking on the LH side as one was winching up a hill past the Winch ****** Scott. This was causing way to many problems for the poor Scotts.
So instead of wearing baggy pants or shorts the choice was to move the intake to the RH Side.

Or was it so the Driver can hear the intake roar???????????????

Does that not sound like a far better story than "I've got no idea?"

Well yeah,

get a snorkel on the wrong side of yer kilt and you'll know about it.

Don't know what you're doing in your kilt squatting on the roof,

but that's your business.
