RIP MP3: audio format officially terminated by developers that created it (http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/technology/technology-news/rip-mp3-audio-format-officially-terminated-by-developers-that-created-it-20170515-gw5jy1.html)
What do we use now to code music files onto a car-usb?
Will my in-car players play it?
Should I now download all my music again in this new format?

Isn't it like other mediums that are now old hat, such as 16 rpm records, beta video et al? Meaning that the superseded format will still work on old devices?
Is there a programme that will convert mp3 to a newer format?

thats what I think as well, ian
mp3 loses way to much quality when being compressed
you can convert to newer but the quality is already gone..
thats why I have all my masters in Flac..
aac and wma do a good job for in vehicle use as flac has no real advantage in a noisy environment imho.

I used to like the 16rpm facility on my sisters old Dansette - i used to use it to deconstruct Beatles 45's. Never came across anything that played at 16 though - what was it for ? Talking books?

Dunno, I've never seen a 16rpm disc, only players with the facility.

That's 16 2/3 rpm. There was also 8 1/3 rpm. They were music recordings.

I recently downloaded a trial of "Switch Plus" by NCH Software, Convert Audio Files To/From All Audio Formats with Switch (http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html)
and bought a licence, it was very cheap. It converts files quickly to what ever format you like. I had some FLAC files and converted them to MP3, very simple to use

Try Audacity (http://www.audacityteam.org/) too.
Very good software for a total freebie job.

I still dont understand mp3 or 4 for that matter.
Have I been unknowingly using it for years, because I have never knowingly applied mp3 to anything.
Is it possible never to have used it?

So if it's on a stick, an ipod (of which I have several) then I'm guilty?
