I've got a noise in the cabin of my TD5 that sounds like a cricket chirping its head off. It only happens in the evening when i come home from work. If I slam the glove box when driving it will stop for a second but then comes back. AND it stays there when I get home and turn off the motor. Its driving me insane.[bigsad]

chirping crickets are not the most annoying sound, but this is.

Do those things have a little fan in the dash that sucks a little air in for the climate control to monitor cabin temp?

Is it a cricket?

Yes just to the right of the steering column.
A vacuum cleaner with a bit of hose duct taped to the end will clean it out.
But it could be the heater fan with a dry bearing, although judging by how cheap they are , they hardly ever fail.
of course could be some gum leaves in the fan attempting to play Waltzing Matilda. I have had a ball point pen in mine.

it really seems like a cricket trapped there as it does it after the engine was stopped too and also that it happens only in the evening... give some puffs of insect killer spray in that area to rule this out

Having read the above I wonder if that is responsible for the whirring fan noise in the dash behind the RH ventilator? Have had a feel inside with the ventilator out but never found it. Explained at last!
Thanks,
Pete

Heater fan for sure , mine does it. Goes away if I run the fan on 2 or more.

I quote the OP's post though cos it seems that a stetement from there was missed:

Like said previously it may be either of these issues:

Dry bearing or debri in heater fan (really easy to pull it out, something like 4 screws and a electrical plug).
for LHD but same same. the fix: Disco 2 chirpy blower motor fix (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-2-a/126474-disco-2-chirpy-blower-motor-fix.html)
considering the sound depends whether you slam the glovebox, which is on the same side as the blower fan, this is your most likely culprit..

or it could be the small fan under your steering wheel that blows cabin air over the interior cabin temperature sensor.

the fix: Disco 2: getting rid of whirring noise alongside steering column (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-2-a/126616-disco-2-getting-rid-whirring-noise-alongside-steering-column.html)

How do you explain that the noise described by the OP is still there with ignition off then?... cos the issues pointed by you are very common no doubt of that but none of them occurs with ignition off though[bighmmm]

Doesn't the ABS module make a grasshopper like sound even when the car is off?

sierrafery

Some of them(not all) are making a clicking noise as the inlet and/or the outlet valves within the modulator are working on some voltge leak from the SLS side of the SLABS but that's not the case when the engine is running and it's not loud at all nor like a grasshopper, also it's not from the glovebox area.... IMO a real grasshopper is trapped there no matter how funny it seems, that's one of those "unlikely but possible" cases

The OP doesn't say ignition off, he says" turn off the motor"
If on accessory then the heater fan will still be on.

Can the Op clarify this please.

This happens sometimes with the climate control fan on mine in the passenger side footwell. Turning the climate control off and on again has fixed it every time so far. Probably fan on it's way out. Will have a closer look (if accessible) when I have the trim off to access SLABS computer for speed ratio corrector install.

Bug spray! Although how long has this been going on, and what is the lifespan of one of these?
Do you have the "Mouse filter" The black foam at the rear of the engine bay? If not, it could have got in that way.

You say when you slam the glove box it stops but what side is the noise actually on of the car and is it dash related ?
Is it this[wink11]
noisy little fan behind grill on dash near ignition switch (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-2-a/158965-noisy-little-fan-behind-grill-dash-near-ignition-switch.html)

Hay Whitey56 you might be onto something here!!

So the latest development was that i drove home from work the other night and noise wasn't there until... I was jumping our of the car and it started Stellaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Its actually really hard to determine where the noise is coming from but i think somewhere behind the radio (which i replaced about 3 months ago). I've sprayed the bug spray since the last episode so will see how this goes.

Passenger side engine mount [emoji6]

Driving the other day reminded me of this thread as the dash was making a lot of vibrating noises whilst I was sitting at the traffic lights. Got home, checked under the vehicle, and both sides engine mounts are fully collapsed. I think the vehicle just gradually got more and more noisier recently and I didn't notice it until it got bad bad! New ones on their way now.
