Someone's Disco Sport ownership off to a bad start

The other night I saw a white Disco Sport pulled into a car yard on Gympie Road along with another car which had clearly run up it's arse.

Not Happy Jan, no doubt.

I was watching John Cadogen's latest video on lemon vehicles. One of the letters was from a 2017 Disco Sport owner who has started a blog on his problems. Cadogen lumps Land Rover in with Holden, Ford, Fiat-Chrysler, and VW over their appalling customer relations (his view).

We have the difficulty recognizing the key issue, which is fixed by pressing lock then unlock on the remote, as worked out by my wife (and you) who is the main driver. Also the double beep when pressing the tailgate button to close it, which I fixed once by doing the foot wave thing but which is mainly fixed by the lock / unlock sequence as well. It often doesn't recognize the foot wave as well and we have had one or two times where we noticed the OAT was not correct, but that quickly fixes itself. None of your other display problems though.

We also had the service indicator prompting for a service at around 13,000km, which I complied with because there is no way I am going to go further than that between oil changes anyway, no matter what LR says. The dealer said it was wrong and they would reset it but I disagreed and got it serviced and then they reset it.

We don't have any DPF regen issues because my wife drives significant distances at reasonable speeds most days of the week.

We haven't approached the dealer because none of the issues affect the drivability, once you figure out how to get the car to recognize the key and get the boot shut. I would rather drive it than spend heaps of time at a dealer! When we do the next service next year I will tell them about the glitches and hopefully by then they will know how to fix them after fixing your car and others!

I note that my L405 Range Rover did the double beep thing when trying to close the tailgate when the key was accidentally left in the house, so I presume that the DS is not recognizing the key when it does it and pressing the lock and unlock button on the remote should probably fix it.

I will follow your post with interest to see if you end up with a satisfactory fix.

FYI, watch John Cadogen's video on DPF's and you will see how important it is to drive adequate distances regularly or you will be up for a very expensive new DPF. This is not a Land Rover only issue. In your position with two regen messages close together I would be going for a few hundred km drive in the country on the next weekend to save the DPF. Can't be much of a chore in Tasmania!

Well done for documenting all your problems... you must have known it wasnt going to be fixed easily. Good luck with the fix / replacement car.

FYI my 2 month old petrol DS has shown the outside temperature issue once and the smart key issue once, but havent had any of the other issues (so far).

I didn't initially know there was going to be problems. After getting stuck on the Spirit of Tasmania (ferry) with a non functioning car and not having the foresight to document it I soon figured it out.

Land Rover Australia aren't very interested in my problems so I have recently passed on my information to Land Rover CRC in the UK with contact details for the people I have been dealing with. Hopefully they start knocking some heads together and kicking butts down here so we see some action.

I wouldn't count on it, though I hope your experiences are better than mine. A while back I complained to CRC in the UK and all they said was that they couldn't get involved with issues outside the UK and would pass my case to Australian CRC to deal with. Needless to say I never heard anything from the Australian CRC.

just an update to this situation...

I have been having the ongoing issues since the day our car was delivered.
Recently I found how to reproduce the Key not recognized error so took the car in to the dealer to make a booking to have it looked at. They gave me a spot around 3 weeks away. After driving directly from the dealers to my house I got another warning, this time it was low battery. I jumped back in the car and headed back to the dealer to see what I should do. Luckily I happened to bump into the manager in the showroom and he escalated things. They took my car in straight away to be looked at.

I mentioned to them that my VIN falls squarely in the middle of the range shown on the bulletin about fault DPF so they promised to look at that at the same time.

So far they have had the car in the shop 3 weeks tomorrow and they have replaced:
DPF
KVM - they say this is what was causing the key issues and the inability to close the tailgate
Battery - apparently it wouldn't hold charge
Drivers door window switches - to cure door rattles
Various other trim clips to sort other rattles and niggles.

The reason I haven't got the car back yet is even with the new battery in the car is draining overnight. Firstly they told me the car was drawing approx 2 amps with all systems shut down. Now they are saying they are seeing between 4-6 amps with everything off. The dealer have passed it on to Land Rover Australia for them to narrow down which module isn't going to sleep when the car is shut off.

During the time that I have had the car at the dealer I have been driving a new (1600km) DS HSE 240 and within the first 2 weeks I had the DPF fault showing on the dash. I also managed to get the blue screen of death on the display at one stage.

They've now taken their loan DS back and put me in an Evoque for the remainder of the time. Hopefully I don't break that too.

Ironically, the day they swapped the loan car over Land Rover sent out a customer satisfaction survey for the first year of ownership. [happycry]

That is just comical - glad I went the petrol route on my DS.

There was no petrol engine version available when we purchased ours. They still don't do anything above SE in petrol [bigsad]

This is still going and we're still getting new errors/faults.

For the first time we got the red DPF light and limp mode recently.

I’ve just been thinking about upgrading my 2007 petrol Freelander2 to a disco sport. Went to read your blog but it’s gone....can you fill me in on what happened to the car and more importantly how Land Rover dealt with it? (Or not)

Unfortunately I can't due to signing an NDA.
What I can tell you is lawyers were involved and we will not touch another Land Rover...
