Howdy AULRO Mates -

I recently came to stay in Seaforth with my family for three months. Some of you have been essential with advice and so forth. I've purchased that 95 D1 from Stanwell Park about a week ago and love it... the plan was to take her home with me until our host family here got some life changing news. Their eldest child - 11 - was just diagnosed with the rarer of the 2 types of leukemia. You can imagine the roller coaster.

I am a professional Land Rover technician stateside (World.Proven - Land Rover/Range Rover Restoration in CA (http://www.worldprovenlr.com)) and i would now like to open the door to pool resources in an effort to get this truck auction ready (on eBay) with a view to giving the family the proceeds. You can also see my recent vehicle restorations and sales on my website as well as under my ebay. user name world.proven.land.rover

VEHICLE CONDITION:

A nice amount of service history exists on paper. Visually i can see that the heads were recently done, among other cooling system service. I am in the midst of doing the 120K (mile) service and sorting minor creature comfort "issues." The truck drives great and is an excellent candidate for what we call an "event truck" back home.

NEEDS:

- the big one is paint. If anyone either runs or knows of a paint/body shop in the Sydney area that may be interested in helping, please let me know.
- tires. similarly, to finish the look, a nice set of 245's would be great (she already has a newly fitted HD king spring set up). If anyone runs a tire - sorry, TYRE shop, or knows someone that does, please let me know.
- LOCAL ROVER BREAKER - she needs a minor amount of bits to sort and refresh the interior. If there is a breaker that is willing to help with spares, please contact.
- individuals who might not want ANOTHER rover but who can help with logistics, donations (money or off road kit of any kind) are very welcome.

VISION:

In a perfect world, she is "show ready" mid july and would be the centerpiece for an introduction to the fundraising ebay auction to follow. This unveiling can be a family friendly run in the sydney area, featuring the vendors and individuals who have helped with the process. A lovely bit of heritage belonging to this truck is the original newspaper advert for this car exactly is retained in its records. Asquith Johnstone is where this truck came from and i will soon reach out to them to see if they are interested in helping with the effort.

PERSONALLY

I have built Rovers that have gone to auction in the past for various efforts. all of them have been successful. To me, the Land Rover community has a tight bond worldwide and we have always stepped up to meet a challenge as a unified front. In the meantime, this vehicle was purchased to be practical transportation for my family and i while here. I realize there will be a certain point when i need to keep her off the road. She belongs to me now, has rego and is insured. This project is still in the early stages, so theres plenty of time for feedback and ideas, but i would love to have the lions share of the major details lined up to begin mid June. My paint and body place back home takes up to 2-weeks to turn the worst of them into the best of them. Tires is 2 hours. The random projects that linger are an afternoon on the driveway for me...

alright folks, am open to all feedback. thanks for your consideration. elias

Wouldn't a raffle at $10 a ticket raise more money and interest in a D1 than an auction

Being a professional land rover technician, you would have access to Trade suppliers for your parts in the US, have you approached them for sponsership?

I would be in for that . Since the td5 died been relegated to the little Kia. A nicely done up D1 would be nice.

thanks for the feedback.... in my experience, auctions are the way to go as people who are looking for a complete vehicle tend to bid with the end value in mind - raffle tickets in my experience have never drawn even close to a break even scenario for vehicle builds and my objective isnt to break even or come close, i want to try and generate something considerable.

yes of course. tons of support and vendors stateside. that would be a secondary effort as im hoping to keep it within the local community. something like this has more value to a breaker here lets say, than to all of my contacts back home. if it looks like ill come up dry then finding what i need in terms of parts etc is easy. but im looking here first. does that make sense?

thanks for the early dialogue. much appreciated. e

Ok this is where it got confusing, as your location in your posts says you are in California, so you are actually here in Aus.

Your motives are probably perfectly valid and honest and I apologise beforehand if I am wrong But my Scam alert Bells are going "Nuts" regarding this thread.
Call me a sceptic But it does seem a bit Odd that soon after buying a truck that obviously needed some TLC for your means of transport you are suddenly donating it to charity as long as it gets fixed up and you are canvassing the forum for support.
I hope I am wrong here But from my perspective a new member of a forum doing this sort of thing and expecting "Freebies" from strangers doesn't come across too well.

I Did see that, I also saw that there are only 35 posts in 11 years.

trout1105 - i can appreciate where youre coming from. there probably are some people who would try to pull a thing like that off... get free ****, take the money and run... as it were. Thats not me. In fact, i have a 4x4 guide book on the way to me (mostly shooting distances from syd) but ill be looking to meet some of the guys on here and i think you should come out time permitting to shake hands... per the 35 posts in 11 years, cant deny that statistic, but i am a permanent resident of the US and you can probably see that my eyes are elsewhere, practically.

So to dispel any mythology... i am in fact here, in Sydney. The idea to do this was only as fresh as the news itself is to me and our host family. And i've said this many different ways in many different arenas... working on cars is really hard. It sucks almost. Ask any tech for an honest answer. Day in day out, yanking motors, doing top ends, ghost diagnostics, hours of contortion... for a living. Walks a fine line almost killing the joy of it. what keeps me going is not just working on cars... its working on THESE cars... working for THIS community. And at the end of the day, if my work can offer someone relief, a smile, some thrills, and in this case if i can do some GOOD with the skillset i have, you better damned be sure im gonna do it when something crosses my way.

And yes, nobody here really knows me from a hole in the wall. I realize this project is VERY ambitious. but im hoping that as folks here meet me and realize im not criminally insane, we can get this done and all see something good come of a collective effort... I hope that helps part the clouds some. and as the weeks go by, i hope to see you out on the trail. i know youre in western australia... but i'll prob have an empty passenger seat and wouldnt mind a co-driver. e

All is Good Mate and Good on you for having a go at this.[thumbsupbig]
There is so much "Dodgy" stuff going on over social media and the internet I can't help but be cautious these days.

i dont blame you and i anticipated fair skepticism with this. there were a few fly by night guys on some of the US forums claiming to be fabricators or breakers.... pocketed lots of money and vanished. But anyway, i appreciate the support and look forward to making something happen. cheers and thanks, e
