View Full Version : Disco owners don't wave
Redback
16th January 2006, 10:07 AM
In the 10 months of owning our Disco and the 30,000ks we have done we have only had a wave returned once, why could this be, i mean we have had more waves from jap 4bs than Landies.
Come on all you Disco owners whats the go here, and is it me or have others found the same.
Baz.

Hi Redback, at least you got one wave. Not once have I ever got a reciprocal acknowledgement from a Mk 3 Range Rover driver, they are so fully of there own importance, they reckon their s##t don’t stink.
On the other hand, you would not believe the looks on some of the Disco drivers faces when I return a wave to them. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Up here in Qld we regularly get waves.
Keep waving, at least you are happy.

I thought it was just a Sydney thing, but since moving to the country it's still the same.

Hey Baz, good topic, made me laugh. Having recently bought a new disco 3, I have wondered about the concept of the hand wave. Everytime I pass another Land Rover I feel this overwhelming desire to give a wave, or even a raising of a finger wave ( ie 4 fingers on the steering wheel, one raised, in otherwords not the "bird"), but I freeze up. I even look to see when I pass another one to see if there is some opening to say "its okay to wave", but alas not so far to date. Even the other day at the Carrara Markets down here I passed the exact same car as myself, colour etc etc, looked for a sign of acknowledgement, but nothing. Having written this it now makes me think that perhaps others feel the same and in hindsight had I taken the chance and waved, then perhaps they would, with a sense of relief waved back. Who knows https://www.aulro.com/afvb/, however from now on I am going to raise a half wave and see what the response is, so if you are on the coast and you see me coming, wave back, please so I dont feel like a fool

We have a little thing we do now when a Disco approaches i say wave at the disco, and we all get out the windows and wave and yell franticly, we certainly get some strange looks.
Oh Lyndon, i think there's an echo https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ i feel i've heard that reply before maybe

Intersting... since owning a fender I've noticed most people acknowledge you. Mostly it's very subtle thing though... kind of like you want to get excited.. but then realise it's dorky and you just end up raising a couple of fingers from the wheel. Interstingly, my wife seems to get more enthusiastic waves from other fender drivers... 8O https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Anyway... in the MINI it's ok to go over the top.. flashing of lights.. waving etc...
The lotus is somewhere in between, even though it doesn't happen very often (usually only on Mt Glorious) 8O
It's a worry having three cars where you are expected to wave. Sometimes I get confused and do the wrong thing... like flashing the lights and waving in the fender... or two fingering in the MINI and being thought of as a snob 8O Even worse I sometimes wave flash the wrong cars... like flashing a defender in the MINI which just results in confusion all round 8O

See the other post. "how low is this" or something similar. I wave at anyhting LR now, no matter where I am.
I drove down to Sydney ( via New England)on Wednesday and back on Friday (via Pacific).
Got precious few waves, but there were a few - defenders always, disco's a few - rangies only got one!! Also got the bird from a RR Sport driver (as I overtook him doing 140!) tosser.
My wife and I were entertaining ourselves - both waving away and getting nothing! When the true LR drivers would wave, it would be as enthusiastic as us.
Then I waved at a Disco in Leichardt and you'd think I spat at him!!! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Keep on wavin I say!!! let's get the LR wave happin everywhere

I get waves from most of the local discos around here, not many of the passers by wave to me. There are 3 or 4 discos in town that wave to me when we see each other on the road. But in Bathurst and anywhere else i am lucky to get a wave.

After reading this earlier and knowing that I get waves up here I had a trial when I did my site rounds earlier. I didn't wave to discos I waved to every BMW that I past. Got no waves but got a lot of dirty looks and a sore arm.
So many BMW's up here makes me sick.
Two discos waved too.

I've noticed several instances around Sydney over the apst couple of months of Defender owners not waving back.
They had ample opportunity too, not like didn't see, which happens occassionally.
Very disappointing.
If I hadn't had a rash of wavers in the past week or so I would become disheartened.

Hi Quiggers and disco95, tailgating is a whole new subject and if you want to see no-brainers who think tailgating is the the only way to drive, come to Queensland.
You can be driving along the the M1, not another vehicle in sight, 3 other unused lanes beside you and you can lay money that if there is another vehicle behind you, they will be tailgating.
I’m sure half the drivers up here are all short lighted.
The local insurer has on different occasions raised the problem in their rag and their figures show that of all the different types of accidents that result in a bingle, tailgating amounts to 40% of all claims which shows it’s an absolute epidemic.
Don’t hit your brakes, because if the no-brainer hits you, your at fault.
If you want to pi## someone off who is tailgating you, either slowly decrease your speed by about 10 kph, then slowly increase your speed and keep cycling your speed continually and if they are really close just slowly reduce your speed to about 20 kms below the speed limit. Even if they don’t get the message, at least you will reduce the amount of damage they will cause if you have to hit the anchors.
It’s an offence to brake unnecessarily but it is not an offence to drive at any speed you want below the marked speed limit. if they are trying to force to go faster, go slower.
Cheers

I find my rear facing camp light works a treat with these idiots........and when coupled with the fogs, to date, has got my message across.
Generally though, I am flabbergasted at the way people drive in Qld. As Drivesafe says, people will tailgate you on an empty highway......out of habbit more than anything I think. I am from Scotland and there is a marked difference in general road sense where people back home almost always leave a reasonable gap between cars (a few idiots aside of course)AND ALWAYS PULL OVER TO THE OUTSIDE LANE WHEN APPROACHING AN ON RAMP......HOW HARD CAN IT BE? Very dangerous to have to slow to a stop on an on ramp and then try and join taffic moving at 110k's.
Anyway I could talk at length about Qld road issues, but I wont.
Have considered the wave also when out and about and will start it from now on.....to any and all LR's that is!!

The 'you have a car like me wave' is almost obligatory for like minded drivers. But as quiggers said earlier around here you get looked at as if you have 3 heads.
I give all the L/r's i see a wave,(wife thinks i am mad) to date around here have had zero replies.
On my last trip out west in November ( Nyngan and beyond) my fingers and arm got sore everyone was waving even on the highways except the l/r drivers. Admittedly it the the last bit trip in the pajero before I got rid of it, I gave the L/R ers a wave each time I saw one, but got nothing in return.
Then we have the tailgaters I haven't had that much trouble with them,if someone gets too close to me my right foot floats off the pedal, theyusually get the hint.Except for the trucks they are the worst offenders, my apologies to anyone on this site who does it for a living, but in my opinion there should not be any freight trucks on the road at all. Thats what trains are for.
If you want an interesting experience get on the pacific highway south bound from tweed heads on a week night and try to drive normally ie the speed limit. If you get boxed in forget it you won't get past them.
thats all for now
john

Firstly, if that is how Sydney has got, phew thank goodness for moving to Brisbane many many years ago. Having said that, whilst we don't have to resort to carrying firearms, a sling shot would go along way to knock the shell off some of the peanuts up here https://www.aulro.com/afvb/. I must admit recently I was guilty of jamming the hammers on the M1 with some tool in a buzz box trying to tail me. All that got me was a " what the hell are you doing" from the little lady, spluttering I tried to explain to no avail. What Drivesafe wrote I hadnt even thought of, so good point. Anyway looked out for LR drivers on the way home yesterday and saw none at all, normally I see quite a few, and Anthony if I see ya in the red rangie will go all out with waves, lights a flashing and throw in some horn tootin for good measure. Have to drive up to Brissie this arvo to pick up my 2 wascles (yep typical statistic) from their mothers, so will be ample opportunity to test out the LR wave. So if ya see me coming expect a wave,

Bloody tailgaters a couple of days ago I had one so close I couldn't see his lights, I touched the brake pedal to show the brake lights so the idiot hit me with high beam spot lights the lot. Did the slow down gig so they would pass - Oh no just keep the spot lights on so I crack it slammed on the brakes pulled over - they passed window down big mouth full of abuse and the bird, Hmm me thinks some Chev Suburbans drivers are not nice people.

When I was a new Disco owner I waved my arm off to any Disco I saw, but most of the time I was rewarded with a curious look if I was still in town. Now if I’m in a well populated area I reciprocate if I get a wave, which is pretty rare. In town I think people just have too many other things on their mind.
I find it’s a different story out in the country. I generally give a wave to any other 4by be they LR, Jap or whatever, if they look like they are traveling. In my experience it is rare not to receive acknowledgment – even from other Disco drivers. Out of town people just seem more friendly.
Get further out in isolated areas, everyone seems to wave no matter what vehicle they drive. I love getting away from town areas.
Thinking about what I just said, I don’t think I have ever waved to a clean Merc or BMW 4x4. They only have space-saver spares anyway and taking a Mercedes off the road voids the warranty so I was told by a Merc service manager.
Cheers,
Kenjo

Drove down to Taren Point today. 3 Defenders, two waves. The third was a very nice 130 parked and empty in the back yard at the local Toyota dealer.
It was surrounded by wrecked cars and I was hoping, hoping that it was wrecked too and looking for a home.
No such luck, still registered and new muddies on.
Bugger.

If I am tail-gated whilst driving the Commode to and from work by a Land Rover then that is perfectly excusable as the sticker on the Commode says "Land Rover.... everything else is crap" and you have to get close to read the crap bit.
If I am tail-gated by a Boyota or a Kissan then I am worried because they might not appreciate the subtle message.

Just as I left for work this morning I was waved at by a Disco owner coming past. First time in 8 months of owning one, and I happily waved back. I think it must be the combination of:
- LROCV sticker next to rego on bullbar
- aerial
- checkerplate bashplate/steering guard
- me grinning like an idiot because I was listening to something funny
- mud
When I had a Fiat, EVERYONE waved. You needed the moral support!

out here in the sticks away from the highway, everyone (as in all vehicles, not just Landies) waves.
Out on the main roads, most nearly all the 'fenders wave (except for D90's !) and very occaisonally a D1.
I had the biggest shock several months ago when a P38 and a DII waved near Penrith. 8O I actually passed 10 or 12 Land Rovers of various descriptions between Murrurundi and Penrith, and most waved. 8)

Hey All,
Well as I mentioned yesterday, had to drive from Gold Coast to Brissie and back to pick up the wascles, and I waved like a mad man to all and sundry whom where driving a landy. One the way back my children thought dad had kinda lost it. The result- 0 returns, though one guy in Mudgeeraba where I reside, went over the kerb near Theo's liquor barn when I waved. Not sure if that was shock or just really poor driving https://www.aulro.com/afvb/. Despite the 0 return, I think the M1 with 4 lanes up and back in the 110k zone it may be a bit much to expect a wave from someone going in opposite direction 3 lanes over https://www.aulro.com/afvb/.......or is it https://www.aulro.com/afvb/. As the new beastie is in for a warranty issue, they have loaned me a D2 ( never driven one prior to today) so will see if I get a better response out and about. Maybe the D3 in black gives off the wrong impression that I wouldnt take it off road and hence not worthy of a wave back https://www.aulro.com/afvb/. Will keep ya posted,

I think there is a bit of a pattern apearing between the city and the bush. It seems that more people wave in the bush than in the city (or even towns)
Maybe in the bush it's an acknowledgment of 'hey we are out here too' Where as in the city it's '**** off I want to be out bush'??
Hmmm I think I will have a beer and think about that one!!

Went to Winmallee today to help my Aunty out around the yard, she has just had back surgery so the yard has grown out of control abit. It seemed like every 2nd vehicle was a Disco, saw heaps, and not one wave. Even saw a heap of defenders and a couple of series landies and didnt get a wave from them either. Very dissapointing to say the least. matt

As far as offroading goes (and setting marque aside for a moment) there are TWO types of drivers.
These are evidenced on Fraser Island.
Type 1: Well Adjusted (like me) - driving along the beach with the windows down and the cool sea air through the cab - enjoying the experience of nature.
Type 2 - The Tosser. Driving up the beach, at full bore, with the windows up and bloody air con going. Honestly, what is the point ? Stay at home you buggers and leave the beach to the Type 1 people.
So there. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I find in the Fender most fender and series drivers give a wave, a lot of early model Rangie and some Disco.
In the Rangie most RR drivers, most series and fender and some Disco.
I find with the fender and RR other like minded people will pull up and have a chat.
It can be an issue of seeing the vehicle in time to wave in bumper to bumper traffic at 110kph across 2 lanes, and often the wave may be a little late (as you pass each other). My co pilot normally looks out to see if they wave and waves as well. Dont despair if you see the Green Pig and I dont wave, I may be concentrating on the road, the kids or the skirt on the side of the road (OK to look). But if you see me pulled over pull up for a chat.

Well I have just had a change of heart when it comes waving to ALL landies.
I’m driving along my local road leading down from the Hinterland to the Gold Coast and here’s this organarse tailgating a woman in a little red car, that seamed to be doing at least the speed limit.
There’s nowhere to overtake so there was no reason to be travelling half a car length off the women’s bumper.
The scum bag was driving a fairly new fenda.
Pi##ed me right off, not the normal behaviour of a landy driver.

I sat at a red light and a late model D2 pulled up along side. The D2 was accessorised for off road, the driver was a "silver back" (an old bloke).
He looked over and smiled and waved. That was acknowledgement of pedigree. After all we are now on the third series of Discos and some of us appreciate the heritage.

Since we got our SII we have lived in four different states and driven it through all mainland states. My observations (tongue firmly in cheek):
1. They always wave in the NT and WA (although in the NT it is a bit risky as that means that there is no hand left on the steering wheel (unless they drop their tinnie...)
2. QLD is good for a wave as long as you are more than 500km away from the SE urban sprawl and the Disco is not a Grey Nomad 'escape vehicle' with a superannuant driver with Vic plates and an excessively large caravan in tow.
3. South Australian's wave at anything and anyone (haven't worked out if that is as a result of innate friendliness, a desire to be loved or some creepy link to that State's reputation for bizarre mass murders..).
4. Victoria is 50/50 - never bother in the inner east or south as they are just slumming it whilst the Range Rover is in for a service.
5. Sydney - they do not wave as:
a. It might be construed as a sign of friendliness (very uncool), or
b. They might have to let go of their tight grip on another appendage.. 8O

Many a time spent sitting on the Freo wharf waiting for those big mulloway.
Afternoons watching the water boil with herring or garfish https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Bet it's not that good now.
Last time I was there you couldn't even get onto most of the wharf.
And what they did to the North Mole

Agree with you rangieman. I just drove 550 kms to NW - NSW and passed about 20 LRs and not one wave yet an Explorer gave me a wave. I just managed to return a wave in time.
BTW, this is the D3s first decent long drive. It still only has 4k on the clock and even after doing 60 or 70 kms around the Gold Coast the day before I left, the V6 petrol still averaged just under 12Lt/100kms.
Got no complaints with that sort of fuel consumption. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

My missus driving into town the other day on cruise control realised that she was going to fast, tapped the brakes to slow down turn off cruise. Car behind started to abuse her and when it finally got to overtake ( left hand lane in 80 km zone when missus doing 80km ) gave her the finger as went past. Must have thought she tapped the brakes to tell him to get of her but.
I to get alot of tailgating, sit on 100 - 105 km in 100 zone on way home from work, I tend to slow down to 80km then even 60km if still not getting the point. Have done this when I'm caught behind something slow and get tailgated, this ussually set it up so they don't get to go past the slow vehicle on the next overtaking lane. They get past me but not the slow one in front, this is my favourite game for tailgaters.
HATE TAILGATERS :x :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

The wharf and jetty fishing in WA is not as good as it used to be unless you like herring. Still some good fishing like this up north but most of the south has been well overfished. Too many greedy ****** taking anything and everything that moves. Only look at the morons during abalone season. The offshore fishing is still very very good though. Dont get to fish enough or at all anymore.

i found this while trying to do a search for checkerplate...of all things, and think its so funny, i have a defender and you occasionally get someone that wont wave back to you, however i was driving through brisbane the other day and a Disco driver waved at me.........i was like WTF?!?!?!?! hehehe disco drivers dont wave to defender drivers......disco drivers dont wave to disco drivers!!!
i came to the conclusion that he must have been driving his misses car and his regular drive is a defender, had had a defender in the past and missed the waving......or really wanted to have a defender and be part of the wave!!!

He was waving to his mate behind you, he he.....most remind me of stiff-upper-lipped english gentry, towing the horse float, definately not wanting to get involved in lowly issues.

I have found a couple of Defenders thatwon't wave back. One is a nice shiny extreem with not a spec on it so guessed it was either new or he was above the Landy thing.

It's funny on the west coast of south australia (port lincoln district) every bugger waves to every one regardless of type of car. Up here in Darwin I wave to very one when I get to my area which is Howard Springs I even wave when driving my ladys Prado. I get no waves back in the Prado but I get 4/5 out of ten in the Disco?? perhaps people expect landy owners to wave?
When I had the series IIa every one waved, and I must admit I miss it a bit, (but not as much as I miss the landy)

I wave to all Landy's, regardless.
Some return it, some dont.
If I am forced to drive the Failane, I still wave ! Only wave I got back tho, was from a late model Rangy.
The Missus thinks I'm a dill fer doin it, but I've noticed that when she see's a Landy now, she has started to wave and say G'day ?
She often misses them tho, as she watches out for wildlife and talks to
all of the animals.
Cheers.
PS: I think that everyone in S.A. waves to everyone else, because they are all inbred and think they are related.

Driving a RR classic I'd say that 7 out of 10 other classic drivers wave back. A few years back, driving from Melb to Qld, my ex was amazed at how many other drivers either waved or waved back. She joked that we were like the Masons with the secret wave thing:D :D :D
