Hi all, been a while.
Had my Black 1983 4 speed manual Rangie parked up for a few years because life got "interesting" and I went to start her a few months ago and got nothing but a large relay clunk from under the dash on the drivers side, Starter MOTOR solenoid didnt activate and as the starter was tired I ordered a new one, fitted it and thought that was the end of the problem.
I bought the Rangie classic AULRO manuals on CD but the buggers are vague at best about locations and as the solenoid makes a healthy clunk under the dash im looking for some help on what this could be before I start bypassing the ign switch with a start button.

Plenty of power, good batteries, clean terminals and all leads and crimps checked for rot, Obviously the Ign switch works or the relay wouldnt be clunking so any further suggestions?

Im gagging to drive this old girl again.

Thanks in advance

Tony

Isn't it on the starter motor? It was on my '86 RRC and my P38A but I can't remember what was on my '83 RRC.

can you turn the motor by hand?
Ie. socket on crank and turn(not literally by hand).

Motor is fine, roll start runs fine and I drove it to where it is now.

Re solenoid on starter? Its brand new.
There is a relay or solenoid under the dash and thats the issue.

I'm not aware of any starter relay under the dash of a stock '83 that would clunk loudly, so either your starter motor is making the noise or someone has fitted an aftermarket relay. I'd be having a close look while operating the key.

Might just run a trigger wire to the starter and get her home for a good once over.

There should be a big silver relay on the LH side of the engine bay, which is weird since it's on the opposite side to the starter. I'll never understand why the factory did this.

Ta Davo, I'll have a look next time im up there!
From memory the trigger wire is Brown/Red trace so if it comes to it I can jump it from the battery to save me getting under the thing again lol
