....by what i saw today.
Customer dropped off a tdi d1 today with poor running issues and low power etc.
This vehicle was 'Tuned' by a so called specialist diesel tuner... and returned to the customer in this condition.
The fuel screw was wound OUT 3.5 turns. The 'boost pin' that was fitted was fitted incorrectly and the smoke screw totally stuffed up. The t piece at the turbo outlet was open on one of its ends to atmosphere and in order to get the vehicle to idle at such low fuel settings the cable was wound up to open the throttle to allow any kind of idle speed. Consequently the vehicle had no power, very low egt s and basically undriveable.
All that for $600 thankyou very much. .
Totally unbelievable to see a tdi 'tuned' in this manner by someone who should know about these pumps and diesel engines in general!!!
Idiots!

I've had a similar experience with mine, although I can drive it ok. I took it to a bloke who has been recommended on here because I'd fitted a bigger intercooler and wanted the pump adjusted to suit. He's adjusted things so it goes a lot better than before, but now if it bogs down a bit, it will release an enormous cloud of dense black smoke. I'm not going back to him again. I've tried twice to get him to correct the issue and it seems he's unable to. I've found instructions on how to make adjustments on the web, but all of them start from the original settings which I no longer have.

Don they are an easy pump/ system to tune. If you want to have a crack yourself you will need a pyrometer and a boost gauge and we can talk tou through it☺

Thanks Justin, I did get those two gauges fitted, At present I'm unsure whether to try to reduce the smoke by adjusting the smoke screw (which is still in it's original position) or turn the diaphragm or the star wheel.
I'd be glad of some assistance.

"Clueless" comes to mind. A quick online search gives several "how-to" guides for tuning a Tdi if you have no idea.

Not just quality workmanship, lots have no friggin idea what they are doing.
I can never understand how you can charge a customer for work, when you have no idea what you are doing. Why even take on the job?
All you are doing is robbing the customer.☹️
We see this sort of thing all day in our trade☹️

I did a Tdi crank that had the harmonic balancer welded on,handbrakes adjusted so they glow, drum brakes adjusted tight enough that the fluid boils, all types of fittings on cooling systems, the list goes on.Did the bloke get his money back from the ''tuner'' JC?. Pat
