View Full Version : Disco vs RR Vogue

Probably opening up a can of worms here, but I'm curious to see why people have bought a Disco 3/4 instead of a Range Rover Vogue, considering older models are similarly priced. Anyone know of a matrix that shows the difference in features between the 2?

For me it was about practicality and space. A D4 makes for a better tourer.

Hands Down the Vogue wins.
If you haven't driven one then don't bother commenting.
Only reason we all buy a D4 is we can't afford the Vogue.[bigsad]

On a related matter, this is a bit like asking what's the difference between 1st / Business / and economy air tickets.

From someone who has never experienced anything but 'cattle class,' I feel somewhat envious of those who can afford the other.

If I could afford a RR Vogue I suspect I'd have one without a second thought to my D4.

I have a 2004 Vogue. Lovely car to drive but I think the D3/D4 might have more useful space.

I have a vogue, and service/repair many discos and l322s. There are many reasons i chose a l322 vogue over a d3/4...

Drive them back to back and do an honest appraisal of their maintenance and repair costs over a 2 year period and you'll soon get the picture 😎

Do you need another ear bashing Ranga?
The D4 is an excellent vehicle, no question. IMHO, the L322 TR Vogue, is simply better as a used option, other than for cargo space.

But I'm biased. [emoji4]

Features not in a SE or basic D3/4 but on Vogue with TR:
• dipping mirrors
• reversing cameras
• electric memory seats with lumber support and front arm rests (lower D4 models missed out on arm rests)
• memory side mirrors
• memory steering wheel position
• his and her keys that will put seat, side mirrors and steering wheel into his and her preferred position
• bumper sensors front and back
• min 11 speakers (povo pack) with 14 speakers on the Lux L322.
• blue tooth phone connection.
• v8 kw/nM. [emoji1][emoji1][emoji1][emoji1][emoji1]
• probably more comfy seats
• no timing belts
• heated front seats on povo pack, front & rear heated seats on lux Vogue and V8SC
• cooled front seats on Lux Vogue & V8SC
• rear AC controls
• rear vid screens on the Lux Vogue
• large centre info screen with TV (TV's not that impressive)
• power outlets for rear seat passengers
• rear suspension strut/spring is simpler on L322 (shock is outside air spring) which allows a single strut to be carried as spare for left and right side.
• suspension compressor on Vogue is inside vehicle and not under body like D3/4 and exposed to damage
• suspensions arms are cast steel rather than pressed sheet steel
• xenon headlights/LED tail light (D3 S & D4 lower spec missed out on Zenon head lights).

With a 2013 + D4 SD, HSE or 5.0 V8 the choice becomes harder compared to an early Vogue.

Hi JC - are you able to elaborate and provide typical costs for each?

How do you go getting accessories for them? Bar work, racks. ETC?

D4 simply because I couldn't fit everything into anything smaller and go touring for 6 weeks without towing anything. Practicality wins.

Mind you if you had a spare $50k for a off-road camper trailer you'd be fine, but then you probably wouldn't have a budget of $35k-$40k for 4x4 which means a 2015 HSE D4 wins.

Not to mention rwc, 1450km range with LR tank on D4, many many aftermarket accessories available....

When I was looking year for year comparisons of a D4 to a RR there was a $10k price increase on the RR....

Well. That really IS a can 'o worms. Having just (reluctantly) sold my 2012 L322 4.4TDV8 Luxury with only 60,000kms in favour of a 2016 D4 SE, I think I'm reasonably well qualified to put in my two bob's worth here.
My L322 was maintained to within an inch of its life. I absolutely loved it, and it gave me next to no issues bar those I inflicted on it myself. (See other posts). For a purely long distance tourer, nothing, but nothing matches it. Just last weekend the bride and I were heading back to Perth from Margaret River and travelled for many kilometres in tandem with a clone of my (former) car, and oh dear, they do look magnificent and magisterial, loping along at 110kmh on long legs at 1400rpm. I gave the driver an appreciative nod, as if to say "I get it mate."
Yes, mine had the dual TV/sat nav screen and the memory seats and the rear screens and oh, those wonderful lounge chairs. The wheels (20 inch) are too big for rough roads though, unless you fit oversized tyres (which I did, just before I sold it) and you sure get some strange looks when you pull into Kimberley road houses.

But in the end, the D4 is hardly poverty pack. Being an end-of-model year, it's got a few touches missing from earlier years, like the arm rests and the reversing camera. We tow a camper trailer (not as often as we'd like) to fairly remote places. I can fit a rear wheel carrier and long range tank, driving lights and all manner of other add-ons. It has more carrying capacity, in a more practical configuration, and a completely flat floor with all seats folded down, unlike the L322. No, the D4 doesn't have that imperious feel about it like the Vogue, and the V6 is missing the sound and enormous urge of the V8 (I used to enjoy burning off my buddy's LC200 Sahara - so immature!) but while the D4 mightn't be quite as quick, it doesn't hang about either.

I'm very happy with the D4. It'll do the job just fine. It's still superbly comfortable on a long drive. And, in a different way, lovely to look at. Specially in white.

The thing I REALLY miss is...well, nobody bought the L322 for the school run. It didn't have enough seats, see?

Nicely summed up Greg. I had a 2010 D4 and now a 2012 Vogue with the 4.4TDV8. Both are exceptionally good touring cars - but I do wish the Vogue had a few advantages the D4 has - eg ease of fitting a snorkel and bull bar with winch (yes its been done on a L322 but not easily); RWC (same). LR Tank - cant be done (although at least the Vogue has 105l already) and critically a 350Kg ball weight for towing (Vogue is 250kg which is silly - especially since it was 350kg on the P38 and is now 350kg again on the L405).

Ofcourse the real issue here is that LR are mean and nasty - otherwise they would have built us a D4 HSE with 250k / 750nm 4.4TDV8 under the bonnet......problem solved.......hmmph.

Thats the kicker, pretty much nil aftermarket gear available which is a shame as there is a nice MY05 TD6 L322 for sale with only 128k on the clock for 27k.

Thanks Loanrangie. Well, that is a shame. I had a look also and there are a few nice ones out there. I've just been contemplating changing my current and the TDV8 looks very appealing but if no accessories that wouldn't suit me.

I would undoubtedly have kept my L322 had there been any way to add after market stuff. For two people, it's pretty much the perfect long ranger. In the end though, the D4 is probably a better option for Australia. Particularly with its load capacity and the versatility of its layout. And as Chris mentioned, the towball weight limit. My camper trailer puts 220kg on the hitch. With the Vogue, that was getting too close to the limit for comfort.
And, I notice now, there's actually more room for back seat passengers in the D4 than there is in the Vogue. More knee room anyway.
