to canberra to buy a defender

well as the post states after finishing night shift friday morning go home get three hours sleep .
wake up talk with with the wife about this defender in nowra and decide we shall drive up to canberra and meet this woman that inherited the car from her late father .

well i rang the owner she was happy to meet me in canberra saturday morning so fridat night we decide to leave 2 am as im a night owl and x trucker driving thru the night to canberra would be a walk in the park which it was .

the plan was drive thru the night check the car out if any good buy it then drive the car 3 1/2 hours to cann river .

so i go to bed about 10 pm thinking ill sleep , guess what somebody is so excited they cant sleep i got a hours sleep.
well we left melb 3.30 am after picking up uni student daughter to help mum with the drive home thats if dad bought the defender .

well the drive was a walk in the park as i thought it would be no cops no worrys arrived at canberra at 11am

the woman turned up at 11.30am she gave me the keys and off the family and myself go for a test drive and hour latter some dollars change hands and im now a very happy defender owner .
well as we were in the capital we thought we would go see the war museum which was worth it .

any way the wife looks at me and says 4 hours sleep in 2 days we better get a move on so we did 15 minutes out off canberra a little place called williamsdale the ford dies now this car has never missed a beat in its life 2000 model futura its been a great car till now.

so i have no tools its computer operated so im lost .
next step ah join NRMA so we do $230 dollars latter now i reckon i got this defender at a good price now the ford is eating into the money i saved on the defender.

anyway the NRMA turned up a hour latter and we were on priority cause the wife has a heart condition (quick) (not) anyway this turky has no fuel filters no computer to get codes of the car . now i suspect its fuel filter or pump some think like that well he tells me its a coil pack because fords are nortorious for coil packs (news to me) .

so this NRMA dude says we will tow the car to the nearest ford dealer 35ks away in phillip so okay lets do it he says tow truck is 50 minutes away . ok its 36 degrees my wife is stressed she has a heart problem lucky we were at a servo air con in the servo so we agree . well the NRMA guy left at 4.30 pm the car did not get picked up till 8 .pm .3 and a half hours latter well the NRMA had a few nice calls from me we even had the head office call me from sydney i must say they were very nice to me

any way car gets towed we book in to motel for 2 nights cause ford dont open till monday morning and im meant to be at work sunday night so on the mobile ring my boss at home no probs he puts me down for a RDO sunday night and a day of anual leave for monday night cause who wants to work 8 hours at night after driving 8 hours good ideal i think .

sunday morning we think we have another day in canberra so lets go out for the day in the defender . ok out side i go to start my new toy well i get in and turn the key nothing no lights battery is flat . ok i say battery dead ill get a jump start then ill drive 20 minutes to ford to see if the sales men are there on a sunday . i get a jump start from a kind disco owner let it run for a bit drive 20 mins to ford umm no sales man ford closed on sunday no probs there is a autopro around the corner battery should have enough to restart. (not)

ok ill buy a new battery which i did no probs then the penny drops no alt light when ignition is on with out the motor running . i have a pommy electrical problem . the alternater is shorting out in side which flatterns the battery a diode is the prob .

monday morning up early drive to ford at phillip sorry were flat out . so i put on mister inocent nice me and beg for help sorry buddy he does send out his foreman who says the same as me fuel (filter) but sorry we are flat out anyway they ring this autoelecs around the corner i take the fotd there and the defender they fix the ford, fuel filter , leeds spark plugs leeds and plugs were done 6 months ago now another set so what we go away for 2 hours mr autoelec rings me ford fixed no probs defender tomorrow .

so i decide to drive defender home the alternater is putting out a small charge so we decide lets drive till it gets dark and book into a motel we made it till orbost last night today im home safe and sound with a crook alternater in the defender . the defender had a full tank when i left which had already done 300ks so it did do when i filled it up 965 ks on 100 litres

im home safe and sound and just luv the defender and economy

i will not buy another bargain interstate i will not go to canberra again the NRMA can go jump start cars and change tyres because they are ony equiped to do so

Hi all,
I bought my Landy from interstate as well (from Sydney), and given the same circumstances, I would not do it again.
I live in Melb, and found this bargain (at the time) 2000 Series 2 Disco. It is manual, and although since I have had it it has been a great vehicle, just the entire road-worthy crap that exists takes the shine off buying an interstate car without a roadworthy issued in the state that you will re-register the vehicle.
I was required to get new tyres (even though the existing BFG's were getting down but certainly not bald), and they believed that the rear-discs were too worn. Anyway, to get the vehicle registered in VIC cost me abit more than I would have liked, but got there in the end.
BTW, what do VIC people think of Ritter? I took my vehicle there for the above mentioned road-worthy (and rear disc replacement), and found their service questionable, and expensive. Since then, for various things like Centre Diff Lock, services and a new clutch, I have tried AMV, Range-Rov and ULR and just found their service departments better, with customer facing staff that actually take the time to listen and answer questions, unlike Ritter. To this day, I still believe they gave me the absolute dodgiest 100000km service, and my Disco will never be taken there again, simple as that. All my opinion of course!

Yea Phillip ford are as good as the polies. A lot of the canberra NRMA guys read a script and don't understand the fix it to get home idea but the other half are great.
If I had known I could have helped you out. I have the ford workshop manuals and know how to get the codes out with a multimeter. Friend in canberra probably could have got you the parts and fixed it even at 2am.

Glad your happy with the new rig though.

Rangieman congrats on the car. I was also lucky enough to take hold of a Defender Extreme last week, but with equal amounts of stress.

I brought it privately off a guy that was heading overseas to live. Two weeks ago I offered him what I thought was a good price, but 2 grand below what he was asking. He said he'd wait if he could get what he wanted.

Two days before leavuing i ring him and he agrees to sell the car, extended manufactureres warranty and a few extra's thrown in. Take him to the bank and organise direct transfer of funds, he preffered rather than bank cheque.

Tells me to come and collect car in morning when the money has gone through, he is leaving that afternoon. Rings me that night to say money has gone through he'll ring in morning to arrange pick-up. 10am next morning I start to get concerned, mobile off and have not heard from him. At 11 o'clock I ask to leave work and go around to his house, which is empty and the lady next door tells me he's gone overseas.

An hour later he answers his mobile, he's in Adelaide (I'm in Perth), on a stopover on the way to NZ. Tells me he's 'left the car with me cousin, no drama mate don't stress, I wouldn't do the dodgy on ya'. :x

In the end I managed to get the car off the cousin who was driving it around, got half of what he'd said would be thrown in. Moral of the story, get a bank cheque and do the handover then and there.

By the way, as I wrote in an earlier post so damn happy with the Defender, makes the stress of getting it fade. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
