Sorry if this is a well trodden path. I want to buy a LR built in 1973 for restoration (year of birth). In the absence of a built plate, where is the chassis number stamped and is there a resource that I can refer to to identify the year of manufacture?

While i appreciate that most LR's in that period rolled off the factory as bastards (lovingly stated) or were touched up by their owners, should I use the chassis as the marker of my claim that I restored a 1973 being the year of birth?

Was given this info. The inquiry is narrowed to finding a resource to identify the year of manufacture.

The chassis number can be dated using http://www.clifton.nl/index.html?calvin.html , although this will usually not give a precise date but only a year. Where a compliance plate is fitted, this has the actual date on it. I seem to remember that 1973 was the year these were introduced to Landrovers in Australia, so they are likely to exist for only some of those produced during the year.
