Have fitted LPG to the 94 RR but am having problems (or SWMBO is) with chronic backfiring that so far has blown the air cleaner box apart.
I have fitted new gas suited leads and fitted new plugs anyone got any further suggestions?

I had the same problem on an EL Ford. When the leads were changed I think that solved the problem :? Or maybe he adjusted the timing too https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Let us know how you go.

Sounds like a timing/ ignition component problem, check all - cap, rotor button, pickup in dizzy, coil, amplifier, leads you have replaced so check them last. Also could be incorrect mixture, has your consumption changed recently ?

if its happening when you start in the morning then are you pumping the gas pedal as you start. If you are then try starting it with your foot of the pedal . this happens a lot with the eb fords. If not then get the timing checked.

Also majke sure that your injector o rings on the inlet manifold are not letting air in and that the injectors arn't leaking petrol into the manifild whilst your on LPG, as mine did recently causing the odd backfire as it was burning 2 fuels at the same time.
Advance your timing a few degrees on LPG as it will cope with it .
My disco has factory timing @2 deg BTDC , I run my lpg @8 Deg BTDC.
Some people run theirs up to 16 degs on LPG

Gee Richard Mine has just done this also but I found corrosion on my leads into the dist cap and one of my leads was not pushed onto the spark plug properly. I have replaced leads /plugs and cap and have repaired/adjusted my airflow meter (flapper) and had the co checked at discovery autos and it is all good.
It was running lean on pet before this happend so I have cured that problem as well.
Do u have an antibackfire valve of some sort?
I have read in many places that you leave the 2 clamps on the hose from the airflow meter to the plenhm loosish so that if u do have a backfire the hose blows off and hopefully save you from damagng the airflow meter.
It worked for me.
hope it gets fixed soon

Hi Brad,
Fortunately this is not the flapper type otherwiseI would have blown it apart.
Will replace the dissy cap and rotor on the weekend and maybe the coil.
I think that ultimately I will get a Haltec put on, when I put the Wolf on the 86 it cured it'.

Sorry to bring this up - But I have an 89 RR and I am thinking of putting gas on it as well for duel fuel.
So I take it as long as the converion is done correctly they are fine on Gas?
Also - where have you guys put the gas bottle? I was thinking if I put it under I'd lose too much ground clearnce

Razza, you wont loose any clearance with the twin scuba tanks, but you will loose boot space if you put one in the rear. Twin scuba's and twin sill tanks is the way to go.

Just a note to say mine is OK now...............having a beer with the Rovertech guys and Steve said the timing was probably too far retarded..........I advanced it 3 degrees to around 9 (those pointers don't lend themselves to accuracy) and not had a problem since, about 4 weeks.

ah! thank you very much for the feed back https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
loanrangie - ta for that tip as well - coz I really didn't want to put it in the back & well yeah - but with those twin tanks - if i don't lose clearnce https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ its all good 8) 8)
just another quick question - how does the gas system go with water crossing's? I am thinking to prep the rangie once I have the snorkle it will be a case of high temp silcon over major things like dis cap & plug connections? but I am not really sure if I have to worry about it either https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

The Rangie I use for serious Offroading is dual fuel, have no problems with water,.............have put silicon grease around spark plug rubber boots, dizzy cap joint, and liberal amounts of silicone spray over electrics in engine bay.
Probably the best thing though is the Wolf 3D which has helped make reliability 100% through all the water I have been through since installation, and I have been through water to bonnet high.

cool! Thx for that - I googled for the Wolf 3D - custom ecu https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ not bad - I am guessing its more water proof then the one rover have in there? https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I'd say with in 2 months time I'll have her sorted out pretty well

No, its certainly not more waterproof, if you install an aftermarket engine management system in a RR one of the recommended places is behind the front RH air conditioning vent, nice and high.
The Wolf 3D is old technology now ( I've had it for about 6 years), discussons with Dave McLachlan who is well versed in these matters, resulted in him recommending the Haltec E8 as being the most suitable for my use for my new RR project.
The advantage of using an aftermarket EMS is that it gets rid of the Air Flow meter and guts of the distributor, has dual maps for the dual fuel and IMHO makes the engine super reliable.

Ah! now I get ya https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I use custom maps for my suzuki 1300 - but I wasn't see'ing the use of it in the rover till you mention the maps for both gas & fuel! hehehe https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ thats going to make it much better!
Thank you very much mate!!
