I'm doing a trip in a few weeks, and I'm considering one of these. It would appear that they are one of the best portable drones around at the moment.

I'm wrestling with the cost and the fact that maybe no one will ever go back there and especially not myself. It's easy to spend more than this on an SLR... but these offer a very different perspective.

As a long time RC pilot I'm just astonished at these things. It would appear the main cause of crashes with these things is running into obstacles because the "pilot" was looking.

Yes, as I look at the pile of stuff I've got to fit into the back of the car, I think they are quite unique and the quality of footage is amazing.

Simpson Desert Crossing 2015 - With a DJI Drone - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MuGpRxHZ6k&t=469s)

When I started flying helicopters were expensive and almost impossible to fly. I remember people who practiced for years and their life goal was to be able to take off and do a circuit to a hover landing. Most never achieved that.

Now, these things are so incredible that the main causes of crashes is commanded flight into terrain/obstacles.

Captain, the one Pedro is referring to is mine - great bit of gear. I'm a real beginner with these things and while I'm very much still learning - getting started is really easy - Youtube is your friend ...as are the training tutorials built into the DJI app.

Homestar knows far more about drones than I do, but as Vlad said.... just do it . I really doubt you will be disappointed. Amazing little machine.

My Airial Reconnaissance Search Engine .The hard case is water and dust proof 335x310x120mm about $80 .It holds the mavic ,controller,3 battries, car charger, spare props,
cords Ipad and Marco Polo tracker .If you can afford the room the case is much better than the MP bag.The MP itself is a great bit of gear and great to fly, takes great pics Unfortunatly my Mac can't handle 4K so I video at a lower setting but still really great:thumbsup:

Just wow that's awesome. [bigsmile] I won't have time to get stuff like that set up before we head off. :(

So, can anyone comment on DJI Refresh. I've read the docco and it sounds like they will replace your drone for a token charge even if you run it into an innocent object. [bigsad]

They must have epic confidence in them (or they cost nothing to make) to offer that for $170.

I have it but due to the forum would be reluctant to use it I have had 2 crashes .The trees in NQ grow 20 meters overnight ,obstical avoidance does'nt work on small branches and dont rely on google earth for altitude Crash 1 $60 for a new motor arm abit of solder about 1 hour labour .Crash 2 $20 for new gimbal plate I only needed 2 off the rubber bands but had to buy the plate. The main complaint with DJI is their crap customer service but like most forum posts you get more negs than pos

As mentioned, a few of us were out playing with Bytemarks on the weekend. As a video platform for taking camping, I don't think it can't be beaten at the moment and I was very impressed - I'll be getting one as soon as I work out how without SWMBO finding out... [bigwhistle]

They have good forward crash avoindance but can still be flown into things upwards - like tree canopies, etc if not being careful. Very easy for a novice to fly although I found it pretty slow and docile if you actually wanted to push it, but I'm pretty sure that was in the settings which I didn't get into too much.

Nice and compact, they are a very clever design. If you have the means, then just get one - you won't be disappointed.

As for the replacement for $170 - the hardware is probably quite cheap - certainly the bits that break when they crash, so I doubt it's much of an issue to whip out the flight controller, etc and stick it in another body. The R and D is what costs a packet and DJI have invested bucketloads to become the clear leader in the industry at the moment which certainly justifies the purchase price IMO.

Yeah, still seemed pretty tame compared to a couple of others I've got but it's not a negative for this unit - it's designed as a stable camera platform so it's never going to be a sports platform. I've got others for having that sort of fun with. :)

I am now officially a drone owner. :o

I ordered two 64 SD cards to go with it. Anyone know how long that should give me in filming.?

Homestar
15th June 2017, 03:16 PM
Well done! You won't be disappointed.

Max bitrate is 60Mbps on them, so just over 2 hours per card give or take.

So, plenty in reality and if the settings are toned down a bit, heaps more than that.

Given that they'll give you between 15 and 25 minutes of flight time depending on what you're doing and prevailing wind conditions, you could chew that up quite quickly if you leave it recording, but it's easy to start and stop the video from the ipad/iPhone so take a practice run over what your want then hit the record button. :)

Of course we now expect some footage as soon as you get it. :D

The case has all the cutouts just load it up .As for the 64 g I transfer any footage or pics to the computor and reformat in the machine If you intend to fly waypoint missions Litchi leaves DJI go for dead but voids your warrenty if DJI consider it caused a malfunction

Any way fun times ahead

I always thought these things were a gimmick. Now... It was all I could do not to buy one at the Apple shop yesterday. .... I have to go back this week....

Great vids, Cap.
