View Full Version : Paypal Issue

I got an email tonight from Paypal. I was about to hit the delete button as it looked like one of the usual scams.

This one however did not have a link to go to, suggesting it might be legit.

So I logged onto Paypal and sure enough it was legit.

I have been using Paypal for over ten years now and they are now asking me for information to confirm my ID.

They want me to send them a copy of my passport or drivers licence, a copy of a utility bill or government ID. and answer questions about politically exposed people. WTF.

They also state that the utility bill can't be an online one. All my utility bills come to me through email.

I currently don't have a scanner(broken) for my licence, so what is one to do.

Has anyone else had this request from Paypal?

Are you sure the email was from paypal?
100% sure?
I'm not going to call it a scam, but if it looks like a scam, smells like a scam, and tastes like a scam... it's probably a scam.

I have logged into my Paypal account in the usual fashion, not by clicking a supplied link.

I had a similar request from an Aussie company selling Apple Mac memory. I told them I would not do it and would go elsewhere to buy the RAM I was after.
They didn't budge and I went elsewhere.

It sounds very questionable but they obviously do request these details at times:

A quick google turned up this:

Confirm Your Identity for a Safe & Secure Transaction - PayPal Singapore (https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/confirm-your-identity)

Request for Photo ID and proof of address - PayPal Community (https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/Limits-and-verification/Request-for-Photo-ID-and-proof-of-address/td-p/717679?profile.language=en-gb)

Personally I'd be very reluctant to provide them

I'd email phishing@paypal.com.au. to confirm whether it'a valid or not. Even if it is..I'd ponder whether i was willing to give them that info.

Sounds like a scam to me. I would be VERY wary of supplying personal information. I have had the "your account will be limited" e-mail which I just deleted. Nothing happened and I am using Paypal as normal.

T‏h‏a‏n‏k‏s,

I get this one, or a variant of it, on a regular basis. best part is that I don't have an account with Paypal. Never have and never will. The closest that I would come to having any "dealings" with them is that I often pay for things through their direct payment option, using a debit card.

I simply delete and ignore any e-mails purporting to come from Paypal and have never suffered any ill consequences for doing so.

At the moment, I'm receiving similar requests for proof of identity etc from NAB to update my account details with them too. Have never banked with NAB in my life either. [biggrin]

Yes I have had all the scam ones as well.
But with this one I am being told what I have to do when I log into Paypal using my password, not by clicking a link, which I would never do anyway.

Here is a copy from my Paypal acc, not from the email.

What can I do while my account is limited?

receive or request money
update your account information
use PayPal logos in your auction listings or on your website

What can't I do while my account is limited?

send money
withdraw money from your account
close your account
add money to your account
add or remove a card
add or remove a bank account
send refunds
dispute transactions over items not received, or not as described

I am not going to do anything yet, but it will be interesting to see what happens when I next go to buy something.

You can forward that email you received to spoof@paypal ot as suggested phone them and ask.

but if you log into your paypal account via the normal way not clicking on links in emails and go to messages in there and see if the message is there.
Are you a verified paypal user? initially years ago they stopped peoples accounts and asked people to prove their identity, once done you become a verified user, this was to stop scammers using paypal accounts and to stop money laundering.

Sounds like a man in the middle attack. Your pc/browser may be compromised and is redirecting requests to paypal.

Did the original request come to you by the full name you use for PayPal (Eg: Dear John Smith, Dear J.A. Smith.) if not it's a scam. It smells rotten from here and I wouldn't supply that information to anyone via an email request. Very dangerous. With all that they have your entire identity. They could sell your house.
My advice, Don't do it. Ring Paypal as has been suggested.
Don.

Well this is not a scam. My paypal does not work. I submitted what they wanted and they have accepted two of the three thing required.

What was rejected without reason was my utility bill. So I rang them this morning to find out why.
Reason was that it was more than three months old.

So I have submitted a recent one and am waiting to get the ok.
