Hi All,
Bought this in the recent Vic auctions...
I will have a good look around it on the weekend - it's dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home.
It drives though! It came with a full tank of juice and started first pop..!

Oooh!
It looks better in your garage.
You need a trailer for it now.
I'll be around in a few weeks to have a look. Put the kettle on.

Up at GG's place today and had a good look over it - and took it for a quick spin. :)
Seems to be in very good condition - has a new front diff - disk to disk in it, new front prop shaft, new tyres. Gearbox is smooth in all gears - even when cold. 24 volt system is complete and has 4 batteries still in it (condition unknown).
Ripper little unit, apart from a tub it's ready for a RWC. :)

* Fix the drivers door strap/stay
* RWC

Looks the goods GG. You might want to consider a low water alarm as well. Well worth the small price.

Yep all good Gav, new head gasket, slight head shave and back on the road. Could have been a lot more serious if not for the low water alarm. I will post up a pic of the head gasket later in the week when I get home. The head hadn't been torqued down properly, some of the bolts were noticeably easier to remove than others.

Hi All,
The Perentie is down at the mechanic's awaiting a RWC - which I am reasonably confident it will pass. While it's there I've asked the mechanic to:
* Complete service (fluids & filters)
* Install a Traxide head-light upgrade kit
* Install an engine saver
* Install a remote kill switch
Last weekend I went down to see the mechanic. The mechanic is a good guy, but unfortunately a little slow at times - I think that (naturally) he spends time repairing daily drivers and he knows that the Perentie is going on club plates, so it's not exactly urgent.. (At least in his eyes! [bawl] )
Anyway - I had a look at the Perentie while it was up on the hoist, and apart from a good clean underneath - it appears to be in great condition. As Gav mentioned - it has a completely new front axle assembly, and everything seemed to be in good condition from what I could see. [thumbsupbig]
I asked him if I would need to remove the 4 x radio mounts (or the tool holders) for RWC and he said: "Nah - it's not your daily, I'd just leave them on"..
The mechanic asked me: "Where did you get this? It's in great condition, sit's on 100km easily and drives great.".. He couldn't believe that it was built in 1988....
While waiting for the RWC, I have done a little late night shopping...
Some Perentie Tac Plates:

Hi All,
The Perentie has been away getting a RWC - which it sailed through! While it was at the mechanics it had some TLC:
* Complete Filter Change (air, oil, fuel)
* Complete Fluid Change (oil, coolant, diffs, etc)
* Traxide light upgrade kit (relays)
* Low Coolant alarm
Some cosmetic stuff arrived - the correct TAC plates, and reproduction number plates:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/08/41.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/X7xfhG)IMG_0681 (https://flic.kr/p/X7xfhG) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr
Next up - I had already purchased these:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/08/42.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/Xanj4k)IMG_0674 (https://flic.kr/p/Xanj4k) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

A little bit of elbow grease later, and they look a bit better (I may paint them later):
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/08/46.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/XnrSMk)IMG_0677 (https://flic.kr/p/XnrSMk) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr
Now that I have the RWC - I'm off to put the Perentie on Historical Rego. [smilebigeye]
I have a list of small jobs to do - but basically I want to keep her as standard as possible, and just get out there and enjoy her..
Cheers,

Hi All,
I've done some work on the Perentie over the last week.
Firstly - I removed the air intake pipe that goes from the air cleaner, across into the drivers side wing. The pipe was badly split in multiple places and couldn't have been doing anything. From the looks of it, it's only really used for deep water crossings.. I am sourcing a replacement hose.
I gave the batteries a bit of a clean up so that I could look at their condition.. Before:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/08/200.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/WiUtar)IMG_0716 (https://flic.kr/p/WiUtar) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr
After:

I am going to fill the batteries with distilled water and see if they charge.. Fingers crossed they will - but I fear that they are dead.. :(
Another cosmetc job - the vehicle has been hand coated with the majic Lanolin... I'm quite chuffed with the difference:
Before:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4412/35618465544_6b4924ced0_k.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/WgtWSU)IMG_0712 (https://flic.kr/p/WgtWSU) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr
And AFTER - you can clearly see the sections that I left for comparison purposes..
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4425/35645882533_2b2618a9b5_k.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/WiUsZB)IMG_0714 (https://flic.kr/p/WiUsZB) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr
[bigsmile]
I plan to go over the entire vehicle on the weekend and give it a good coating..

It also cuts down on the intake noise - as I found out years ago on the County, when the bolt on the top steering U-joint caught on it and pulled it off. (It felt like the power steering had failed!)

* Re-fitted the bonnet tools (in preparation for Corowa/Cooma)
* Re-fitted the (empty) Jerry Cans (again, in preperation for Corowa/Cooma)
* Replaced the broken lower dash trim
* Installed a missing light cover in the rear (the red one)

Hi All,
On the weekend Dave (BlkKnight) came over and gave my Perentie a thorough technical inspection - what Dave doesn't know about Perentie's probably isn't worth knowing. Things achieved:
* Technical Inspection
* Adjust Idle
* Bleed Cooling System / Top Up
* Get 24V system working (some wiring needed to be cleaned-up)
* Check the batteries (all 5!)
Some of the things that Dave pointed out:
* Hockey Stick Bushes (front) - keep an eye on them, starting to show wear.
* A Frame Bushes - keep an eye on them, starting to show wear.
* Shock Towers - surface rust, remove, clean-up & re-paint
* Body brackets (various) - surface rust, remove, clean-up & re-paint
I would highly recommend that anybody with a Perentie get Dave to do a technical inspection. I learnt more about my vehicle, given tips on how to maintain it, and had areas of surface rust pointed out to me.
Cheers,
GG.

Hi All,
Last Sunday I went for a drive to Wallan to stop off at Simon's place... Along the way I took a happy snap - I love driving the Perentie.. [biggrin]
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/98.jpg
Simon was having a bit of a shed clear-out and kindly donated a Defender Cubby Box - and my plan was to either fit it to my '60 Series II or the Perentie.
When I got home, the first job was to re-glue the fabric on the passengers door:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/99.jpg
Next job - was to fit some padding for the front ROPS:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/100.jpg
Next job was to fit a missing canvas clip on the drivers side:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/101.jpg
Now it's time for the purists to turn away... [wink11]
I spoke to SWMBO and asked if she wanted the cubby box in the Perentie or the Series II - she drives the Perentie far more than the Series II, so in the Perentie it goes then!
Firstly - I removed the existing rifle holder section, I will keep this so that I can always put the Perentie back to 100% standard. Doing this install - I did not have to drill any holes for cut anything - it's all a straight bolt-on job.
Checking my spare parts - I had a seat box lid from a Series:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/102.jpg
I sanded it back, put some pop rivets in the empty holes and removed the latch:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/103.jpg
Painted it the correct camo green:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/104.jpg
While the paint was drying I cleaned-up the Cubby Box, not that it needed a lot.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/105.jpg
Installed some spare sound deadening material on the bottom of the cubby box:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/106.jpg
And finally all bolted in:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/107.jpg
Another few jobs done over the weekend / last night.
Cheers,
GG.

Hi All,
I drive the FFR with the rear canvas up - because I like to see what's behind me. I know that I could reduce fumes by rolling it down, but the canvas that I have doesn't have a window in it.
I know that I could use the blackout sheet (directly behind the front seats) - but again, that doesn't have a window in it (which would defeat the purpose of a blackout sheet)...
Anyway - I decided to install a cheapish fume guard..
I purchased this from the UK (Paddocks) - it's not the correct fume guard, as I believe that you can't get one specifically for a Perentie. In the below picture you can see that it is basically for a Series vehicle and has attachments for the hoops. However these won't work because of the large ROPS in a Perentie.
https://i.imgur.com/T2qMKjS.jpg
You can also see that I have marked (black pen) the locations of the eyelets that I plan to install.
Purchased this cheap kit from Ebay:
https://i.imgur.com/uimqMdF.jpg
A close-up of one of the eyelets installed:
https://i.imgur.com/htYBGli.jpg
The rest of the eyelets installed:
https://i.imgur.com/tlGXKn3.jpg
I then used cable ties through the eyelets, attached to the ROPS. Once installed you barely notice them.
The unit installed - from the rear:
https://i.imgur.com/EZPZg6F.jpg
The unit installed - from the front:
https://i.imgur.com/rYdUCMz.jpg
While I was at it - I installed my Cooma badge:
https://i.imgur.com/esaWMZj.jpg
And then took it for a drive on Sunday:
https://i.imgur.com/cn034F0.jpg
I am very happy with the results. It definitely cuts out the fumes and also some of the noise.
[thumbsupbig]

Hi All,
When I was getting ready for Winter Wombat, I noticed that I had a leak coming from the heater box. I have never even used the heater so no big deal.
To get around the problem (and with the help of Mick88) - we removed the 2 x metal pipes that go to the heater, and plugged the hoses (fan belt end), with wooden dowels.
Obviously that wasn't a permanent solution - so I fitted a bypass hose.
https://i.imgur.com/zY6D57N.jpg
Next up - I organised a lighting upgrade for my Perentie.
https://i.imgur.com/N41B23v.jpg
Mounted them by welding a small bracket onto the rear of the bar (which can always be removed later):
https://i.imgur.com/jbGrm53.jpg
I had a spare (empty) socket on the dash (far right) - so installed the switch there:
https://i.imgur.com/fUH1Ru1.jpg
All up - very happy with the upgrade... The new lights are very bright! I had already upgraded the existing lights with relays, but wanted something for night driving.
I will organise light covers at a later date.
Cheers,
GG.

Hi All,
I installed some sound deadening on the engine cover for the 101 - and was very happy with it.
Whilst I know that a Perentie is never going to be quite like a modern car, I do think that every little bit counts... So I decided to install some sound deadening underneath the Perentie's bonnet.
I got an email from "Car Builders" - with a new product for under bonnet sound deadening material that they just released. I like the look of it - because it's not silver, and doesn't have any branding on it.
First step - off with the bonnet:
https://i.imgur.com/jA3t0GZ.jpg
Next step - one section at a time, remove any nuts, bolts, split washers & washers. (These are holding on the bonnet tools):
https://i.imgur.com/aBPxJAp.jpg
I measured and cut each piece, then cleaned the surface, installed the piece & re-installed the nuts/bolts/washers.
And finally after about 5 hours of mucking about:
https://i.imgur.com/1xSnZPR.jpg
Next - I have a spare few metal boxes at home - that I decided would be a good fit for the Perentie.

I sanded each box back as best as I could be bothered... [wink11]

I painted one box with the correct paint, and the other with a colour called "Pale Eucalypt" - I rekon that they've come up all right:

The next step is - I will be installing some rubber on the bottom of each box, to help prevent slipping / scratching once I use them in the Perentie.

Hi All,
Did a few jobs on Lizzie over the last week - plus picked up a No.5 trailer for her..
Fitted some seat covers - the seats are 2 different colours and starting to look badly worn.. So hopefully these will help the seats last longer:

Had some light covers made - and fitted these at the same time.

On Saturday I drove 1,600kms in approximately 19 hours - from Melbourne to KLR and back home again. The new driving lights are fantastic (yes, I took the light covers off).
Here is the new No.5 trailer - it was built in 1965, came with a log book, and had the spring packs replaced in October 2016 - so good for another 50 years!

I have posted this question on REMLR - but would anybody happen to know which unit/regiment this is for?

The only mishap on the trip was this - I was doing maybe 50/60kmh on the Hume on the way home. Luckily I was approaching a road work section (that was only one lane), and managed to pull off very quickly and change it by the side of the road.. You can see that the sidewall is warped? Not sure if it is because of the age of the tyre? I checked the pressures and I am running 40psi in the front, 50 in the rear. The old girl probably hasn't driven 1,600km straight @ 100kmh in it's entire life! I do think that the sound deadening under the bonnet has helped, a little bit.

G'day gents and Ladies. After five years of searching the country for a low k decent priced Perentie I finally got one. 72000k, $13500 FFR. Now here's the odd bit, I live in a little town in Tassy called Wilmot, half way between Devonport and Cradle Mountain. Middle of nowhere and on the way to somewhere else. Well imagine my surprise when I jump on gumtree and this thing turns up 20km away, unbelievable!
Now here's where I get some loins stirring and have the rest sitting up like a pack of Mearcats.[smilebigeye]The other one he had there, another FFR has spent it's entire life in Tassy, with of course a reserve unit. I can hear you salivating so here it is. 5000km, it looks like it just rolled off the production line. The galvanising on the chassis is still shiny and the doors close like they are on a Range Rover. $19000 not negotiable, oh he has put a full set of brand new tyres on it but it is unregistered. I came within half a thou of buying it myself, finances were a bit tight. If you are interested give me a yell, I have his number. If I win lotto tonight, forget it, I'll be up there tomorrow to get it.
Hows that for an intro?
Cheers.

Hi All,
I haven't updated this thread in a long time... A minor update on the FFR - I got sick of flat tyres on the beast, so I went tubeless....
* Wolf Rimms
* Falken AT3W 235/85R16
I have kept the original wheels & tyres, for when I eventually sell the vehicle (who knows when that will be, probably in 10+ years)

I have exactly the same tyre/wheel, except with UK extended wheel studs.

Great truck! Glad to see you have new tyres on it.
I noted somewhere in this thread you or someone mentioned they werent sure of the tyre age?
If people look on the side of the tyre close to the wheel and find 4 digits that look set in to the tyre slightly, this is the week (first 2 digits) and year (last 2 digits) tyre was manufactured.
Your spare I noted was 2008.
While tyres on a Perentie may well look "new" just like with mine and plenty others I see, the tyres are often 10 to 15 years old. Making them a danger to you and other road users.

Great looking Perentie Tom, I finally have one now also after years of procrastinating, an 1990 FFR, will be arriving at Pickles Hobart on the 6th of October, can't wait.
Your thread has given me a great guide to clean her up and have already got some parts ready for it's arrival, ignition, door locks, apparently needed for rego here in Tassie.
