I read/heard recently that something like only 15% of under 25's can drive a manual. That's gotta be a good thing for Defender owners given most car thieves are in this age bracket also.

I'd give good money ( if I had any ) to watch him try and find the OptiCruise selector, but even Western Star drivers can manage a RoadRanger.

The cruise shouldn't be a problem, but I never got the down hill doohickey to work.

Set point retardation? Easy peasy, and truly awesome.
But Ian, I said OptiCruise, not cruise. I watched a bloke sit there, engine running, brakes off, for 15 minutes before I couldn't stand it any longer and took pity on him. I had offered to show him a few things about the truck, but he was an experienced truck driver and he knew what he was doing.... until he didn't.

It's the automatic manual that Scania uses, a bit like Volvo's I-Shift, or Eaton's auto RoadRanger, 12 gears. Manual box, but the computer controls the clutch and the shift. Not bad, but always uses low gears to get going, even when you have 730 HP, 3,500 Nm, and are bobtail. The thing is, there is no gear selector anywhere obvious. There's a thing you twist on the end of the RH stalk behind the wheel. Nobody finds it first time. They think it's the wipers or something.

Oh, that piece of crap, I worked it out alone but I did have to reverse a B dub back down a hill when it couldn't change down quickly enough, and stalled. :bat:

I can still remember the hiss of the 'cold start' thingy. But I grew up with Daimlers. Check out DB 18s. Not the consort model, but the 1948.

When my Jeep finally hits the road should make a few people wonder why it has 4 levers in it: Manual shifter, Overdrive/ underdrive selector, high/low lever and 2wd/4wd lever. Works out to be a 12speed not including the 4 reverse speeds.

Toll and Red Star have their share too.
I had to park a Volvo double for a couple (2up) of them who said they were to tired to reverse, as they had come all the way from Shep! :Rolling:

Red Star? Ron Bunker would be turning in his grave, if he was dead. Westfarmers should stick to hardware stores.

The old guy who taught me to use a quad box would be spinning in his grave!
He used to use a inch and a sixteenth ring spanner as a mental reinforcement tool, by whacking me on the knee with it, anytime I did something stupid like using the clutch for anything other than taking off and putting the pto in gear, or putting your arm through the steering wheel, or taking both hands off the wheel for any reason. Forty years later, I still get a twinge in my knee if I even think about doing anything like that.
Anything other than a single joey box wasn't made to be shifted on the move.
Posers who never had to fix the stuff they broke, was his opinion
