I dunno. I like it that a; he survived, b; he has been embarrassed nationally, and c; his first lesson was expensive enough that he may pay attention. What worries me is that he will get about a billion likes on social media, and will do something worse next time.
You're right, Gav.

The same thing happens all the time in Aus where new owners of a 4WD head off down the beach without a clue of what they are doing and get hopelessly bogged.

Actually your spot on... I forgot about the guy that bought his first and new 4wd in Bunbury and then drove to Yeagarup the next day, and tried to cross the Warren river mouth...
They dug the vehicle out, the following day with an excavator, after the tide had been in and out...

We've probably all done it to some degree.
I overtook a snowplow, thinking he was just for lesser vehicles, and ran straight into a snowdrift round the next corner. The snowplough driver never said a thing as he pulled me out but his look said everything.

Doesn't have to be a 4WD either.

You were lucky. The ARC here in Vic don't have a sense of humour about that stuff. Well, nobody here in Vic seem to have a sense of humour about much at all, so shrug...

My daughter had a brand new Rav 4, all wheel drive. It devoloped a gearbox issue so she returned to the dealer for rectification. After admitting she had taken it on the beach she was told the warranty would not be honoured as it was not a four wheel drive.
I will quote her verbatum "I suggest you turn around on your fancy swivel chair and look at that big picture of two Ravs on a beach. maybe you'd like to reconsider."
They fixed it. [biggrin]
