View Full Version : How do I get into the starter solenoid?

Took the Bosch starter apart for a clean and noticed one of the threaded terminals on the sol was a bit floppy doppy so decided to pull it apart to see if I could tighten it up. Removed the two screws at the end but the two halves dont want to seperate. It feels as though something is holding on on the inside. Anyone pulled this apart before?
All comments gratefully appreciated as usual ,
cheers,
D

You are still attached to the solenoid windings, which are mostly soldered in, one to the other end of that spade that the blue terminal is attached to, and the other over the other side going to earth. Might be best to leave it, unless you like a challenge. It's not really hard, but it helps to have a bit of an idea. I would try tightening the posts up and trying it like that.

One thing though: in that pic there is only one nut on each post. That is wrong. Those nuts should be tightened down to secure the posts, and another brass nut and washer should be there to secure the terminals.

Sure. Just tighten them down, there is a 'square' on the other end which will hold them from turning.

Many solenoids don't have enough thread for two nuts, in fact sometimes it's better not to have two as you have to undo both to tighten the post. One single nut applied to the post will hold the cable and the post quite adequately.

True, but that is an old Bosch, and the OP clearly stated that his desire to get in was a wobbly post.

Which in the picture appears to have the short studs suitable for a couple of lugs and one nut and washer. The wobbly post was probably due to the cap retaining screws being loose.

We looking at the same pic? I see, on the RH terminal in the pic, a nut, a terminal, and at least 4, and maybe as many as 6, turns of thread on that post. By far easily enough to put on another terminal, and another nut, and do the thing up the way Bosch intended it to be done. It's an old Bosch, not some bit of ebay garbage. There's even room for the correct washers.

Thanks Gents all good - cleaned up the threads and managed to get the nut down nice and tight - now no more movement. On the hunt in the misc nut box for a couple suitable to go on top.
