I've read several posts on this, but coudn't find a answer.
Defender Td5, needs it's 90,000 oil change. Currently using Castrol TXT Softext 5w/30, now called Castrol R something. It's fully sythetic and is what Landrover Dealer has used since new.
Anyway mechanic reckons thats way too light for Australian conditions, despite what LR states. Any thoughts?
Any recomendations would be greatly appreciated. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Brett.

I have used Castrol R 5W30 since almost new. Towed a 1500kg to Darwin and back in the hot weather with no issues. However, my service manager is recommending Castrol R 5W40 for towing and hot weather.

I use Castrol Formula R 5w/30 but they have just changed it to another name supposedly better oil. Any 0 or 5w will suffice. I only use synthetic in the diesel.
Be wary of any mechanic telling you to stray from what the manufacturer recommends. Ask him if he will honour your warranty if you change oil grades because LR may not. High tech turbo charged diesels run light oil to be effective. To heavy a oil will cause poor fuel economy and may actually block oil galleries. Sounds like your mechanic does not really have a clue. Gone are the days of running earthmoving diesel oil in your car.

I use shell helix ultra 5w/40. It's a fully synthetic...the best oil Shell sell. I'll probably never know whether it's better or worse than any of the other synthetics. But, at the 20% off Supercheap sales it's $39 a bottle. I'd rather change it twice as often....

Thanks guy's, yeah I would rather stick to what has been used to date and recomended by LR.
Just to clarify Castrol TXT Softex went to Castrol R, and I do believe is now called Castrol Edge Sport. They are all full synthetic, able to be mixed and 5w/30.

Usually the owner manual or workshop manual will have a chart of oil viscosity vs max and minimum expected temperatures.
Perhaps look to that for guidance.
Being old fashioned I still think 5W30 is pretty thin for high temps. The 30 is at 100C. Does the oil get over 100C? Probably in sand work in 40C.

I asked this of LR, but the engine is very specific and the dealers will not warrant engines using oil higher than 5w.
a 5w-30 or a 5w-40 is fine, nothing above eg. 10w-XYZ is acceptable.
Penrite HPR Diesel 5 works brilliantly... Quiet(er) smooth(er) and cleaner.
Cheers

Tombraider got it in one https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I had been using Castrol in a 10 weight. Always had this annoying vibration that could not fine. I decided to change to Penrite HPR 5 Diesel and now that annoying vibration is almost disappeared. The engine feels smoother and seems to run better with the Penrite.
I will not be going back to Castrol now.
Cheers,
Lyndon.

true....penrite is a quality oil.....
but having said that....castrol do make an oil specifically suited to the
european spec engines such as the TD5......
using the wrong grade oil in any brand is not good for the engine....
now im curious to hear how much people are getting their penrite HPR Diesel 5
for....only comes in 10 litre drums or 205 litre as far as know....
and is rare and expensive....
i got my first lot two and a half years ago.......$95 10 litres.....
its now available in a few more places but its still around the $80 mark i think....
will know for sure in the next week......im overdue for my oil change....

thats not the same thing.....
i need HPR Diesel 5.....
diesel oil has more detergents in it than oil designed for petrol engines
due to the extra carbonning you get from burning oil.....
