LT230 - replacing the diff centre - does the TC have to be removed from vehicle?

Can anyone advise with the LT230 does the transfer box need to be removed from the vehicle in order to replace the diff centre in it or can it be completed in situ?

It can be done in situ if you are a masochist like me.

I removed the centre console top which improves access greatly.

Usually the hi lo selector shaft will stay in the body of the transfer but to be safe you should remove the detent ball which is probably the worst access of the lot as it is next to the chassis rail.

If you are repairing the centre diff and replacing the front bearing you will have to reshim the front bearing. There is a good how to that I just saw the other day from UK on Utube.

this has been asked before, I do believe some odd types have done it in situ, but saying that it really should only take a few hrs to drop the transfer case out, it will make it a lot easier to strip on the bench and re-assemble.

Yeah, much easier to do it on a bench - they aren't that hard to get out - if you're really keen, you can do I think on your own with a trolley jack, but if you have a mate to help it's easier.

I've removed mine more times than any sane person should have to. I agree, removing it is the best approach. You may find it easier to remove if you remove the transmission mounts too. You will need to support the transmission with a jack if you do to take the stress of the engine mounts.
Also if you remove the hand brake drum and brake assemble while it is in the car it is also lighter and easier to handle the TC.
