View Full Version : Would you hand over the keys to your car, new or not??

Dilemna, and I have to be careful as my partner likes to sometimes read the forums and check up on what I am writing https://www.aulro.com/afvb/, plus enjoys some of the topics that are in here. I just copped a bit of a basting and am interested in what others would do, given the same situation. Now I think whether your LR is new or you have had it for donkeys years is irrelevant, as a mans house is his castle, then a mans landy is his steed. Correct?? https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

My partner, who let me point out somehow seems to be the one whose car gets a scratch in the shopping centre wanted to borrow my beastie today to run her ( and I know this sounds bad, really bad  ) mum and grandnan, plus assortment of kids, from the station and back as it has the 7 seats, otherwise would have to do 2 runs in her car.

Also my car had to go in for a warranty issue so I was without if for over 24 hrs, again over 24 hrs, so was pining for it, so to go another day without being in it was almost too much to bear 8O . Am I justifying myself enough yet??? Well, I didn't let her have the car as I am still in that "its only new phase and a bit precious about it" and https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ well its my disco and I love the feel of being in it. Don't get me wrong the XR6 is a cracker, but having being belted for 6 in the latest hail storm and looking like cellulite on wheels, wasn't keen on that prospect either. Thoughts, am I in the wrong?? Seriously need to garnish some support for my position, but being an adult can also cope with objective criticism. Doctor anyone?? Anyone.................. 8O . Otherwise have a great weekend peoples, will post some pics next week as intending to take the beastie for a bit of offroad around my place ( I say offroad around home, she just laughs and says driving through a field aint the same https://www.aulro.com/afvb/)

An interesting dilemma!

Do you keep the landy all to yourself so as to enjoy every minute of ownership?

Or do you allow someone else to experience the ecstacy of driving one and run the risk of setting a precedent. :?:

Yeah, I know I use the term "adult" loosely 8) Defenderzook, but in terms of sharing Jamo, that is a different kettle of fish https://www.aulro.com/afvb/. Its that bad that even tonight we are going out for dinner and movie ( as we have been able to palm off all our kids for a change) and Im letting her DRINK. Why??? Cause I want to drive my disco. I'm sure with time as my youngest is learning that one must share, but you have to feel comfortable to do so, and I guess I just aint ready yet https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ . Geez, so far my case aint looking flash

Stevo68,
I am with Hiline. Whilst yours is a beautiful looking thing. It is only a car.
I guess you have insurance don't you.

Mate let her enjoy it as much as you do.

You never know the benefits that might come your way from being relaxed about these things.

I let the wife take the fender whenever she wants ... she loves driving it and always comments on the hundreds of looks she gets from other blokes on the road. Having said that ... whenever we leave the bitumen I'm in charge!

I can understand the dilemma, but be careful, as the disco may end up not being the only thing you have to "do by yourself"

.... if you catch my drift

I feel the same way stevo, but common sense dictates that I let her drive it too. Just not as much as I drive it.
Even though Rosemay's over 10 years old, I love the feel of being behind the wheel of her.
If the missus needs to drive it though, she does.
As for the drinking thing, yeah I don't drink as ofte as I would if I owned a different vehicle. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I don't think I would even have the guts to try that on my lady.
But I'm keeping right out of this one. Keep us posted on how long your sleeping in the back of the car though. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I'd let her have small well supervised goes. If she doesn't appreciate how great the D3 is then, when the next model upgrade comes along she won't be as enthusiastic to update or move a better model if it comes along.

Give in in the end if she leaves you and takes the kids, house and cars you will still be paying for it.

No I'm not a divorced or separated father.

I'm with Greylandy. Even though my used fender is a new purchase I am happy for the girl to talk it on a stroll, if she lovs it as much as you think of the benifits. Less hassle when it comes to spending all those dollars on it I reckon.

And hey face facts you like me obviousley care what others think (remark about dented XR6), so what could be better than having ya girl stoked about the Disco.

There is a special forum for relationship counselling in the sealed section of aulro.com. Do a search and post this thread there and I'm sure that you will get the benefit of people's wisdom. BTW it excludes spouses automatically I don't know how it does this though.

My Fender is actually my wifes anyway. All our vehicles are technically owned by her. You will have to give a bit I think or you may be heading for divorce court, and she will take the house, kids and D3 anyway.

Steveo68,

We obviously live on different planets 8O

Mate, relax, it's only a car, it's hopefully insured and surely she can drive, and the relo's will be wearing clothes https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Encourage her, a willing partner will make those trips away easier and they'll happen much more often. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

When we upgraded to the D2, my wife wouldn't drive it for a month :?: :!: I told her it was insured and if she didn't - I'd get rid of it and we'd get an old Series 3 LWB. She loves it, (and hasn't damaged it - unlike me  )

She loves getting out bush, doesn't mind where we go - or if I just go.

Yeah I'm a lucky man - but mate, read some other posts on here from guys that get castrated for even lookin at ARB catalogues.

Enjoy the car, don't make your missus hate it, and make life easy on yourself. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Much as I love my Rangie....if there was even a hint ..of having to choose between it and my life partner of 30 years...it would be out the door in a seccond.
She doesn't like driving it anyway and she has refused to even try the Skyline (200rwKw and a twin plate clutch that is either in or out)
But if she wanted to I would be happy with it.

You need to get a wife like mine who is too scared to drive a big car let alone a 4WD https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Why don't you remove the 3rd row seats and make it a 5 seater!! Tell her you need to do this to access the spare wheel otherwise she will need to leave her shopping on the road side while she changes the flat tyre 8O

Stevo a perfect example of this is that Kira (my partner) has come on a few 4x4 outings with Gold Coast Landrover Owners Club and although she doesn't enjoy it as much as I do she has a great time and realises the importance of offroad accessories and bought me a pair of rock sliders for Christmas!!!

the only thing better than enjoying your new toy is enjoying your new to with your family!

 mate ,tis easier to give in early than drag it out forever,no-one will win that way,and as everyone says "its only a vehicle"
my rangie has only been home a couple of days and the missus has already had a drive up the road, and checked out the spacious rear cargo area(plenty of room for groceries was the comment! 8O )
we both drive MY work ute(tojo twincab 4x4)and on our last trip to fraser co-erced her into driving up the beach (much to her delight!)and no doubt she will have more than the occasional drive of the rangie, better to enjoy it together than making it like another person she has to contend with for your attention

My wife drives the Freeo but doesn't really know how big it is, so I usually drive when parking or the like is involved (last time she parked, it was right on the line markings ...).

Now the Rangie  she has already declared is hers. Something about the sound of the V8 and the big "Don't screw with me" bullbar https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Stevo,

By now I'm just repaeating so many others.... but you can't be serious...

It IS only a car... hopefully it is insured. Landies are pretty tough.... she won't damage that much...

You never know - she might grow to love the landy like you do...... you could end up as a 2 landy family https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

My missus doesn't drive mine often.... she prefers her little buzz box.... but she CAN drive it... and is welcome to anytime...

.....or almost any time.... not so sure I'd be a happy passenger up Zeka spur :?

She has learned to drive it off road... not cause she wants to take it from me... but so that one day... when I stuff up in the bush.... she knows how to get us out :!:

You sound like you need a priority transplant mate... the missus should come before the car...... if not... it probably time to trade in the missus 8O 8O 8O

My Wife likes travelling in our 4x4 but hates driving it. She drives it onroad but only when she absolutely has too. Like when she needs the space to transport something if it is too big for her Corolla.

I don't mind my Wife taking it but I would prefer she didn't. Mainly because if I need to go out while she is gone I don't like her Corolla https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Plus having a 4x4 isn't just about driving it. It sucks when you want to rip out all the suspension this weekend but she needs it to go shopping or something equally unnecessary https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

As for anyone else driving it I don't like that at all. My Dad drove it once and I thought we were going to die. That was in the city!!
I lent it to my brother for a month when his car was off the road and I was away with work. I didn't have to see it go or come back though so it was like it never happened :?
A let a friend drive it off road once with me in the passenger seat so he could get a feel for 4x4ing. Surprisingly enough after the initial "are you insane??" thought he did extremely well. He was very open to my directions and did exactly what he was told. It was eventually the calmest I had been with someone else driving it. I guess it was because I was still a little in control and he was a very good student.

Let her drive it. Just don't let her make a habit of it https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

G'day All, just popped in from testing out the new ride on, Ithought getting bogged in sand was hairy, driving this thing on wet, hilly land is an all together new experience https://www.aulro.com/afvb/. ANyhoo, thanks for the genuine feedback, it was a little tongue in cheek my original topic ;)and the missus knows what I am like :? . WHen I got back and found out that it had taken and 1hr and a 1/2 to do the train runs, the guilts hit and I let her know that next time she can have it, plus as some you may have guess, conjugal rights were about to be yanked 8O , and we cant be havin that. SO yep the weekend to date has been spent handing over the reins, with comments of " whoo love the V8" " hmm makes you feel big and powerful" " gee I can park it". So thanks for all the good points though I have read most them after reading the comments, just so people know I do have some redeeming qualities https://www.aulro.com/afvb/. Plus I told her about the question in here, and I got the "I told you so" comments. Arr why do we dig these holes sometimes  . She is content to driving the XR6 and if required can use my new beastie. In all fairness to myself https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ I have only had it for 5 weeks, it was a reasonably tough call https://www.aulro.com/afvb/. Keep having agreat weekend, back to mowing,

Hi Guys
I had the trailer on the Disco the other weekend for my lawnmowing round. She said when you are finished leave it on as I want to take some rubbish to the tip.
The next morning when I was going to work the CDL,TCand ABS lights were on 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O 8O
This is when I discovered my CDL lever had broken.
When I quizzed her about it she said I already knew the SRS light was playing up.       Judging by the mud on the tyres and trailer tyres she had a go at the mudhole up the tip, even admitted she went around the edge and not thru the middle like I let Lindsay last time he went up the tip with me.
I figure she forgot to unlock the CDL or couldnt?????
DONT MESS WITH MY TOY I told her https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ You have your own 4x4 https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Part2

went to visit Lenthals dam on the way home from Bundy on Friday,, raining, raining, raining, we'd been at Across The Waves for lunch and Di offered to drive home (wot a girl  )
about 15 kays of muddy dirt out to the dam and on the way back to the Highway I said " Lets go for a run thru the quarry"

and Di wheeled BUB straight into hell.

It turned out to be great fun with Di getting BUB all crossed up and covered in mud.
In fact I've just spent the last couple of hours try to get it off----
the mud that is,
