Hi All,

I am a bit of a newby to this.

I have a few questions and I was hoping I seek the help of those who have more knowledge than I.

I have a S2A 109 4cyl Carawagon and I believe it is a 1968 model.... It requires full restoration and is not registered.
How do I know or find out exactly what year that it is?

My main questions are:

1- The bulkhead on my S2A is stuffed (probably beyond repair). I have found a good Series 2 bulkhead.
What are the differences between the 2 bulkheads of the 2 vehicles.
Being a S2A the wipers emanate from the bulkhead (not the windscreen surround) but the unit I have found does not have the holes for the wipers in the bulkhead as it is for the earlier styled vehicle.
Does anyone know if I was to buy the Series 2 bulkhead, is it just as simple as drilling holes into this bulk head to accommodate the S2A wiper assembly?
Also, is placement of the wiper motor easy or possible in the Series 2 Bulk Head?

2 - I have not completely stripped the vehicle down in full as yet but I have also managed to find access to a separate Series 2 Chassis from a Station Wagon that is also in good condition.
Does anyone know what the differences are between a Series 2 4cyl 109 station wagon chassis and a the chassis of a Series 2A 4cyl 109 2 door?

I look forward to hearing from you with your responses.
Thanks in advance
Kind regards,

Darren

There is no specific difference Series 2 to Series 2a - there was continuous change throughout production, and the only specific change that marked the change from 2 to 2a was the change in the diesel engine from 2.0 to 2.25 litres.

But to answer your specific questions, the bulkhead and chassis will differ only in minor respects (such as the wiper setup you mention), provided that the engine is the same, or at least with the same number of cylinders. (More differences if you also consider 'One Ton' or Australian Army chassis, but still would be usable)

Note that the legal identity of the vehicle is the chassis, so changing to an earlier chassis with a different body may create legal issues, although carawagon to stationwagon is likely to be not much to worry about.

Congratulations on getting a Carawagon.

John's answered your questions but how about posting some pictures in the 'Dormobile & Carawagon conversions' section of the forum. Interested to hear it's history if anything is known about it's earlier life

I have a 1965 Series IIa Dormobile and I'm not too far away from you.....

Hi John and Colin,

I am sorry for the slow reply to your responses from my earlier post. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I climbed under my vehicle over the weekend and measured everything on the chassis and I have found a station wagon chassis and bulkhead interstate that I believe may work well and I aim to measure it up in person this weekend.
I believe the inner rear cross member on the Station wagon chassis is not as deep as what is on the 2 door variant and therefore can accommodate the rear mounted fuel tank that the Station wagon came standard with(???)

I was hoping to be able to fit the existing Series 2a wipers to the Series 2 bulk head but I am not sure that it is going to be possible without a bit of messing about as the S2A wipers through the bulk head are not as simple as drilling holes and placing them through the bulk head, as there are some landing sections moulded into the bulkhead steel for the wiper spigots...
When I look at it I will be able to see if I can work with it.

Colin,

It would be great to see pictures of your Dormobile.
Here is my unrestored Carawagon.

Darren,
My Dormobile is in the 'Dormobile & Carawagon conversions' section under 'Walter the Dormobile'.

I hosted the pictures with Photobucket who are now demanding large fees for 3rd party hosting so I'm slowly going back through and adding the pictures back via Flickr.

What happened to your pictures ??
