View Full Version : TD5 Discovery lack of power.

Hi there everyone,
First of all, excellent site and good to hear so many people know what is what with the beloved disco.
I recently upgraded from a 300tdi to a TD5 auto 2001. Great car but I have started to have problems with it. I noticed a severe lack of power between 3000 and 3500 rpm. Also noticed that the sound of the engine at that time seems very loud. Took it to my local dealer who informed me the turbo fan bearings were gone. I replaced the turbo myself (not paying their prices being a tight scotsman) and low and behold still the same. I have checked for air leaks etc and found nothing. Turbo boost solenoid working ok as is the turbo wastegate and actuator. I am now at my wits end. As I said the car has no power over 3000 rpm to 3500 rpm and she only does 75-80mph flat out.
Hope some of you guys can help as I have lost all confidence in my local dealer.

Hi Jock
Is it possible an intercooler hose is collapsing or leaking?????
How long since the fuel filter was replaced,could be starving for fuel???
Check an intercooler hose internally for oil contamination,the intercooler could need an internal cleanout.
Another thing to check that may sound silly,have a look at the airbox,check where it recieves air before filtering it.Has anynthing been sucked into it or hornets built a nest in there???
If you keep drawing blanks a plug into a testbook computer may reveal the problem,some non landy franchise repaiers have them,others may be able to reccomend a workshop in your area.

here is two things for you to check both happened to me and gave the same type of symptoms.
1:-on the plastic pipe between turbo and intercooler there is a rubber hose
that goes to a sensor this hose splits with age.
2:-on the inlet manifold there is a sensor check the plug mine came loose

I have heard of a couple of instances (in other vehicles) where the power of a turbocharged engine drops off at moderate revs because the inlet hose on the suction(?) side of the turbine collapses. Food for thought?

Thanks for getting back guys, much appreciated.
After chacking the car out today I found traces of water sitting at the back of the engine. I also notice dampness between the head and block, I suspect the head gasket is gone. Can this be a cause of the loss in power that I originally posted.

Is it using water/coolant?
Fill the overflow bottle to a certain mark and go for a drive for a few hours to check if fluid is lost.

You may want to get a power balance test on you injectors to see if you have a faulty one.
I have one that plays up at approz 2200 revs

I had the exact problem a few weeks ago on my TD5. I first thought it was a fuel problem and in a way it is. It was actually a faulty boost controller.
The mechanic explained it to me that because of the faulty boost controller the turbo was actually over boosting, and as a built insafety measurement the computer was cutting fuel supply to prevent damage to the engine.
This was covered under warranty and do not know what the cost of repair is / was. The vehicle was actually 2months out of warranty but LR did cover the repairs.
I also had a lack of power one day after 4 wheeling and later found the air filter was full of mud and water.
