View Full Version : Problem that defies logic!

I have a computer problem which I cannot have resolved, so I call upon your combined talent for all things computerish to get me out of my misery
Problem: I cannot log in to my account with Telstra using Firefox. I have spent considerable time on Telstra chat, all to no avail. My Telstra home page has two buttons, one marked login to account and the other to log in to Telstra mail. I want to go to my account so I click the appropriate button and it brings up the login page. I enter my user name and password and I get the "user name or password incorrect" message. I know I am putting in the correct data as I have verified this. So I go to search in firefox and type in Telstra account login and once again i get the login page where I enter the data and it fails again. Following Telstra advice I have deleted my search history and password memory for this site. All to no avail. So I go through the same process using the w 10 inbuilt search engine (which I never use), and the stupid computer works ok and I can log in to my account. What on earth is going on? All I have is a headache having fought this problem for 3 hours now. Other than burning the computer does anyone have a solution to my dilemma? [bawl][bawl][bawl][bigsad]

Hi Jim,
When you use the inbuilt W10 search function - it is using (I believe) Microsoft Edge - the new web browser from Microsoft. As you say - this works.
But when you use Firefox - it isn't working.. So that would suggest to me that it's a browser based problem.
I'm wondering if you have accidentally saved your username/password (in Firefox) and it keeps autofilling it with the wrong one?
Have a look at this web page - it explains how to delete automatically saved passwords in Firefox... I would see if you have saved any passwords for the Telstra site, and if so - remove them and try again...
Password Manager - Remember, delete, change and import saved passwords in Firefox | Firefox Help (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/password-manager-remember-delete-change-and-import)
Failing that.. Use Microsoft Edge for Telstra only OR try Safari or Google Chrome! :)

Delete cookies & data like temporary internet files, restart computer & see if that helps? See if there's an update for Firefox. Try google chrome or safari

I, too, have been having trouble with my Telstra email over the last month.
In my case I was using my Telstra account to send email for email accounts on my own domain.
I contacted Telstra support and they said they could unlock the account but claimed I had a virus that was causing their security protocols to lock my account. After doing the whole deep scan bit the account soon locked again, I suspect it was getting upset at the way the telstra account was being used to send stuff from another domain.
So, I've changed the way I access and send mail on my domain but haven't gotten around to contacting Telstra to get my accounts unlocked again.
While I understand Telstra trying to make their system secure it annoys me no end that a system I've been using for the last 12 years suddenly will not work. Telstra support is a farce, they have no idea how to deal with problems that aren't covered in their script, and there is zero feedback to customers about system changes.
So, in short, get Telstra to reactivate the account.

Account is active and can be accessed by any search engine but Firefox, which is the one I normally use

Download Chrome- has a few issues with some pages (usually ones with Frontpage extensions activated) but not as many issues as FF has. Historically, FF has been a bit too "bleeding edge" to be considered a "reliable" browser. (IMHO of course)

My Telstra inbox was unreachable via webmail for more than a month. I had to call a tech and told him many times what the problem was (wouldn't believe me that it was their end). Eventually it got sorted. Fortunately I was able to access emails by installing Mozilla Thunderbird on my main laptop so I wasn't too worried.
Win 7 and whatever Firefox version is current.

I wonder if emptying your cache would help?

Done that. Even disabled add-ons in firefox. It seems silly that I can log in to other sites requiring a user name and password except this one. I have verified both with Telstra and I am using the correct ones. Why can I log in to this site ok using a different search engine? I makes no sense. Now why has this type changed colour and underlined all by itself and I cannot remove it. (https://au.tv.yahoo.com/plus7/house-rules/)

Just to be sure that you're password and or login name are absolutely 100% accurate check this:
In FF, go to Options(3 lines in the toolbar)
Go to Security tab on the left hand side.
Page opens, in that page is a [Saved Logins] button. Click this.
A new window opens up with lots of URLs on the left hand column and the saved login name in the next column.
In the lower RH corner is a button that says [Show Passwords]. Click this.
(you will see a security notice, click yes.
After you click the yes button, the window with your usernames will now show a column with your passwords visible.
There will be a long list of usernames and passwords, and to sift through all of them quickly to get to the telstra specific URLs, type telstra in the top most search bar.
This will now show ALL URLs and logins on all telstra websites saved in FF. You can clear any individually, or there's a button to clear them all.
And you're right .. the problem does seem to defy logic!
ps. I also have one weird issue with my Optus account(s).
Optus are so backwards, they can't integrate my mobile accounts with my cable internet account. (to me this just smells of incompetence masquerading as an attempt to upsell!)
.. anyhow, if I log into my Optus broadband account, it's close to impossible to then login to my mobile account. No idea why, but the mobile account seems to get stuck with the same username/password as the broadband account.
Both passwords are the same, but the usernames are different. If I clear the relevant optus links in the password manager, it clears the system in some logic defying manner, I can then login to my mobile account, and then log in to my broadband account after that.
But if I log in to the broadband account first .. i have to go back to the password manager and .... never ending repetitive loop.

that proves it is a setting or saved data in your profile OR with your mailbox on the server IMHO
Firefox ESR is the extended service release version that is pretty much garanteed to be business class stable.
and it doesnt have the back doors and data integrity issues chrome has.
it may have issues, but very few compared to most other browsers
try Vivaldi if you want something with a different interface.
have you rung telstra support?

I spent over an hour talking to Telstra support, to no avail. Never fear.... it was a user problem. Somehow I had 2 saved user names on that site. One with incorrect spelling in the extension. Found how to delete it and removed. All working ok. I knew it had to be something to do with how it was set up but couldn't see it . Instead of having .au, I had entered .at The second one was correct but I just clicked on the wrong one because it came up first. Oh well I activated a few grey cells in you guys and myself , so thanks for the assistance. I have learned a lot more about Firefox over the last week. Now my headache can go away [bigsmile1]

Well it has been a while since I've used FF. Might have to give it a shot again. As far as data theft, I doubt that Google is Robinson Crusoe in that field [emoji12]
