Its tall/wide but not very long, load of spruce...

Not sure on the cubic mtr weight of spruce but the tyres on that truck didnt show a hell of a lot of weight...

At a guess I would say gross 50-55 tonnes...

If it was WA Karri, then the truck would be broke...

The bit that would scare me is the bridge, f^&% those narrow bridges, ones up north use to scare the **** out of me(get on bridge, line up other end and close my eyes)...

Love seeing the old trucks in action, but even better driving them... Especially the old twin stick Spicers and Mack boxes... Always good for an embarrassment...

The first time I crossed the Gilbert, I was swinging three at 100k, crested a rise to see this right in front of me.

To answer the question in the name of the thread: YES. It could have done that with six or more trailers, as you well know, Ian. Why do you ask?

These are one of the things that scare the hell out of 4x4 drivers when using logging trails to get into the good offroad (unlogged) jungles in Malaysia...

They are colloquially called "Lori Hantu" and if you come round an uphill corner and see one of these creeping down the hill above towards you.... You have to take immediate evasive action. Get right off the track or back up and get completely out of the way. Lori Hantu have no brakes and when wet (as it is usually in rainforest) the muddy slopes are slippery and narrow so its too risky to imagine the Lori driver will succeed in squeezing carefully past you if you dared imagine there is enough track width for passing...

I could be wrong but the back wheels on the trailer appeared to be skidding, not turning. Yes? Is that their brakes?
They are scary. At least they have bodywork. Some of the ones I saw in Myanmar were just exposed engine and seats.
As you say, all you can do is to get right out of their way and never try to follow one up a steep hill.

It's optical illusion Mick, the frame speed coincides with the speed of the tyre diameter. Note the motion closer to the hub.

As V8ian mentions its an optical illusion. Have seen plenty with varying degrees of bodywork present or missing. Old fruit crates for seats etc...

I like the low concrete edge, NOT!

I remember years ago, a guy going across Fortesque bridge, single lane, and an HQ sedan going otherway, decided to pick on the truck, discovered that a HQ and an R600 Mack towing 3 can pass on the bridge...

It took a crow bar to open car doors and for some reason the wheels where out of alignment...

John, I have seen, driven and thoroughly enjoyed the result...

W-model, and tri trailer...
I purchased all the chrome steel I could cart from a mine, for $2,000...
So I loaded it all on and took off... Truck was soft on the corrugations and wandered a bit, but it drove fine...
Unloaded half at a mates place then drove into Perth and unloaded the first half at a scrappies...

First half went 29 tonnes, next went 24 tonnes...

My bank balance was pretty good for a few months...

Truck had KW wedge block suspension, first time that it was smooth on the bumps...

It pulled better than having 2 stock crates on, less drag...

That's a Fisho's trick. We Tug people are far more diligent.[tonguewink]

Once I was towing a hopper full of mud from Botany to the spoil ground 10NM E of South Head (Sydney). The tow was at 200 Meters. A Fishing Boat, lit up like a Christmas tree was heading straight for the middle of it at 15 Knots. Call him many times on the radio. Nothing. Put the search light on the Wheel House windows. Nothing. Put the search light on the MESS ROOM windows 10 Seconds later he changed course dramatically, at less than a Hundred meters off. Italy were playing someone in the World Cup.

Back in the seventies All the river crossings from Barradale north were "Interesting".
All of them were single lane and some of them were just 2x 3 foot wide strips of concrete that you had to straddle that made the crossings even more "Interesting" if the river was flowing at the time [wink11]

When I was working in the Pilbara and Kimberleys, I travelled from Nanutarra RH to Broome and all points west. Nanutarra to Broome was all good road and wide bridges, but off the coast, a different story. Two places I recall having to call were Doolena Gap on Marble Bar Rd. and the Nullagine R. on Rippon Hills Rd..
There was an incident at the Nullagine with three prime movers and twelve trailers, ending up hell west and crooked, and somewhat damp. [bawl]

They had Timber Jacks and Clarke Skidders with GMs and a Tree Farmer with a V8 Perkins .The Perkins and the Cat did the job OK but like a Disco had no Soul:Rolling:

The GMs working on the ramp were bloody annoying and would even vibrate the tea in the billy no bs .But when working at full noise down in the scrub all was forgiven[thumbsupbig]

When the ore was coming out of Woody Woody, on triples... I had one go past with 2 upright and one was on its back...Near Bamboo creek turn off...
The guy went past doing about 60, he kind of didn't believe me when I told him the last dog was all legs up...[tonguewink]

There are so many funny stories from the road, hey...

I took some goats down to Perth from Geraldton, truck behind me asked if I would stop running over the goats on the road... I replied "I havent run over any goats" then it dawned on me, F%$# I'm carting them...

Pulled over quick, gate on rear of lead hadn't locked... 20 goats from last pen on bottom deck abandoned ship only to be run over by the dolly...

20 out of 2,000 didnt get noticed too much, luckily about another 12 where rejected so they just wrote off 32...Embarrassing, sad but funny too...

Roadworks on Everest, the profilers were spraying into the back of tippers while TC operated a contra-flow. I asked one of the traffic controllers, via the UHF, if they were sending the road to Perth to have the holes darned. He must have been a short bloke, as it went right over his head.

Now they had a note of there own...

I've been told that Scania used to cast Mack's V8 blocks for them.

Nope...

Simular looking but not the same...

Interesting when you hear people say one was a copy of the other...

Design teams had experience in both worlds but the engines where built seperately... But remember, both where looking at good combinations of power and torque and the 375 hp V8 Mack was around before hand to learn from...
Also other V8's had been proven in certain ways and functions...

Both resulted in good engines and you could make both sound nice but I think the Mack got the best result in the end...

One thing I do miss now I cant work, is the feel of a diesel pulling hard... All 6's and 8's when going into the torque band, have a beautiful feel about them...
I am old school and work my engines down to near maximum torque and thats when you sort the boys from the girls...

My last boss thought i was going to blow up the truck I drove(He called it the Lemon, I loved it), DD14 Pulling down to 1275 rpm, that thing had a note all of its own and when you can drag 88 tonne through the hills from "The Lakes" to Northam and kick the arse of a Cummins Sig, you earn the right to bragg.... The old truck was still going 6 months ago when I visited, and the guy driving was told to drive like I did.. I spose the fact I wore parts out but didnt kill it may have helped... He did buy me a new toy 6 months before I had to retire, but that was only a pussy CAT C15(they are impressive engines)...
