Howdy All,
So I decided to use this little thread of my own to post all the things that are about to be bolted on to my.. new to me Rangie.
I will also be bolting up a roof console that I have had kicking around for years and not able to use thanks to the sun roof in my green rangie... but now :D
I will take a heap of pics of this item in case anyone would like to make one.
List of items already in place;
TDI 300
Rock crawler gears
Twin maxi lockers
Maxi axles and rear axle housing
Upgraded CV's
5sp Manual suffix box
2" Lift
Snorkel
List of things happening;
Clean up and repaint my full roof rack
Fit roof top tent
Park it at LRA and get flares sitted, Madman system, rock sliders & right hand snorkle for cabin air (Twin snorkle setup lol )
Get full setup from forby fitouts with draws and fridge slider etc DIY Draws in Sydney get my cash for a stacked draws and fridge slide
Fit up my rear bar with wheel carrier
Get new bullbar since my old ones no good - Done New one didn't fit - sourcing another - funny enough selling a D1 winch bar :p
Get new winch and light bars etc not over the top but replace current ones
Move over the CDL switch setup instead of using the handle :P Decided not to do this! Keep it all mechanical
Fit roof console and FM radio pod
Park it at performance car audio for a custom setup Did it myself and IMO just the way I wanted it and better and cheaper :p
Park it at piranha off road for the third battery setup and their isolator configuration
Move over my cargo barrier as well
Fix heater fan
Fit snow tires for snow trips - Already happening - ie right now today
Get off set rims for the bigger muds - Already have a few ideas - Fitted up the 265/75/16's on standard rims instead
Fit my sill tank from my green rangie for another 40lt on top of the 120 Have sill tank - but not sure on fitting it just yet
Fit another sill tank for water carrying on the passenger side sill Will only happen if I fit the above sill tank
Fit all my bash plates
Fit my diff breather kit
Getting there - updated 19/09/17 and birthday not far off... wonder if she'll be ready for a camping weekend.. mmmm
Update 8/11/17 - Done her first major trip, while a few things still need to happen she proved her self far beyond anything I ever expected!
I will be bringing over as many bits as I think are good enough, from the Green rangie and cleaning them up to go in to the new one.
One of the first things will be a center console rebuild based on this idea -https://landroverforums.com/forum/modifications-33/range-rover-classic-center-console-image-intensive-14123/
But also to bring over the wood panels from the mean Greenie - and clean them up. I have used this wrap to see what its like... with a vinyl dye to change the plastics to a charcoal it might look fairly good.
And of course my awesome MOD plate :D

Looks like it. Code LA1 is for an equivalent engine conversion.

Hi Razzor,
I've had those tyres on my POS for awhile now.
They wear a bit fast, but are super grippy on wet tar and surprisingly good in mud (not boghole type mud).
Not a bad all rounder if most use is on the road. No plugs in any of my latest set (yet).
cheers, DL

Yeah mate - I used them for over a year but they went with the Disco I sold recently.
I chose to get them for snow runs up mt Buller and other area's - they handle great in snow and can air them down for light track work as well.
Yes they wear quick because they are a soft tire for the snow - so I only use them for winter and have 2 other sets of rims.
But I am hunting for a good off set rim for the mudders that I'll get in a few months ;)

35" is a little too big for me. :-) probly 32's but the rims... are they off set outwards for those tiers or you use spacers?

Hi Razzor,
Not offset much, no spacers.
They sit nicely inside LRA flares. Can email or text pics if you pm me.
At some stage I'll be selling 5 x 15 x 8 Hurricanes that are offset more. They have the Maxxis on them atm.
Want to fit Rostyles with 7" rims, little or no offset. Looking for a set of those.

Ahhhh, shes all ready for roady and name change starting Wednesday.
Had more fun getting my roof racks off the old girl and a few other things. Took out the center console for making up a new one.
Unbolted my sill tank .. but the damn thing didn't drop lol At this stage my neck had gone stupid so I had to stop.
But later this week is full bore to get that sill tank out and make room for painting up all the bits :)
Still got to sit in it and work out where I am going to have everything located too - I also find that I am excited for that even lol
New badges rocking up this week and "Landrover" door protectors, wind shields for the doors too :)
RaZz0R
13th July 2017, 02:36 PM
Yay - all changed over now and Vic rego'd :)
I got some cool bits from Terra Firma for door wind shields? And some new badges arrived from the UK - nice 3D ABS black polished lettering for the Range Rover front and rear :)
Since shes a TDi 300 - I also got the TDI badge in the same polished black.
Work on the new console has come along with the new top ready and wrapped. Just have to finish marking out the rest of it and cut and put together!
New dash bits will go in over the weekend as well and I have just about finished with the green meanie and all her bits..and then she goes away so I can have area to paint all my bars and roof racks.
Another two week wait until I can go nuts buying a new winch and getting it up to LRA... speaking of which - might ring and book her in now :)

Got them from flea bay - but seem to be terrafirma stock :) they fitted well and I think they look alright. Sleek looking.

Thanks Meccles :)
I did the rear while my girl took care of the front as she had to use the spacing of the old letters as the spacing was different.
I got them from the UK - I think they are meant for the range rover sport of recent years lol but I reckon they look the goods.
With the greenie pushed out on to the street looking like a wreck and ready to get picked up tomorrow - its given me an under cover area to start cleaning up (stripping down)
my full roof racks so I can re paint them before fitting to the new car.
Same with the new bullbar and the rear step I have with a wheel carrier - few more weeks I think.
Mean while I still have to sit in it and work out whats going in the roof console, the dash pod and where I want the rest mounted including a little monitor for reversing cam.
Oh and I have finally decided on a cool switch block - sPOD - 8 Circuit SE System w\ HD Switch Panel - Universal (http://www.4x4spod.com/product_p/8-800-hd-uni.htm)
Love the features and I think it will work nice with the layout I am shooting for - bit exxy - but then its done right and no cutting in to the dash [biggrin]

Done all the out side rails and sprayed with rust converter and a primer for now. When its dry I'll flip them and strip all the middle down and do the same.

Took some time to go snowboarding Saturday so limited time to do much of anything... apart from get rid of that stainless steel snorkel for my nice molded one :arms::arms:
Did it much nicer than on my Green rangie tho!
On that note if anyone wants a stainless steel snorkel for a rangie.....
126758126759
Tried fitting the resistor pack for the heater... no change, dead blower me thinks :(
So saving up the 2-3k it will probly take to have the whole dash ripped out, and the heater unit full rebuilt and all new seals and filters etc etc - and do the aircon while the dash is out and clean up wiring.
It will be worth it in the end - just have to plan when to get that done now... and yes I am going to get it done professionally by someone whos done it 20 more times than me and will replace anything that
gets broken. :D [bigwhistle][bigwhistle]

So I have had this roof console kicking about for the last ten years - and finally got it fitted up!!
Only housing the UHF currently - an older tx4200 with an external speaker mounted in there as well. Thinking of mounting the rear map lights that came with it and making a storage compartment on the other side.
Or maybe fitting the HF radio I plan to get down the track.

Finally got around to doing the half cargo barrier... more of a pain then I thought - used a air tool with a grinding stone to make the holes in the plastic for the bolts and a angle grinder with a cutting disc for the access holes.
127808127809
And my rocker switch panel arrived today - and it fits perfectly in to the hole for the factory stereo! Zero cutting required - VERY happy about this as I called the guys first as they are here in Victoria!
7 of them together is a perfect fit! They have a blue soft glow to attach to dash lights and bright blue when turned on.

Slowed down a little with life and stuff... well kinda...
Solved my tinny speaker issues :D
So front's now have 4" 3 ways in the top and bottom has US Audio 6" woofers - cutting the bottom wasn't that hard and we managed to fit some two way cross over units that came with the woofers.
Woofers also have tweeters but don't need them
128628128629
I used the same JVC 4" in the back - but added a set of 6X9 sony's - which need a little amp in the back but will be much better than a subby and massive amp setup :)
I will mount these later today so they sit on top of the rear wheel well.
128630
And I picked up these bad boys on Friday - off set rims from LRA with some 32" Simex Jungle trekkers - now to book in to LRA for some Flares ... rock sliders... maybe a madman system with a million sensors :D
128631
I almost forgot... Got my sill tank and transfer case from my old green rangie in case I want more fuel on board :D

Looking great! Like your stereo what are you using as head unit?
Its a Clarion head unit - I like it so far but might change it in the future... if I find a good enough reason :)
Clarion Australia | FZ307AU (http://www.clarion.com/au/en/products-personal/audio/FZ307AU/)
She puts out 45w per channel and seems to be plenty with the setup apart from those 6x9's - the blue also ties in to the other bits ;)
The only thing I don't like is the mic is built in to the head unit instead of an external one - but seems to work really well so far. Got it for... 100.
The speakers and head unit were all sale items \ looking for best bang for buck.
I decided to try for un-amp'd speaker setups and spent a lot of time listening to the 4" one before I decided on the JVC drven range.
The 6" US Audio's were a fluke find at 75 bucks where most other brands wanted 130+
Same with the 6x9's - I was going to get the JVC drven but the sony's were on special for 80 bucks. Can't go wrong. :)

I've got the Sony MEX-XB100BT as head unit - simply because at 100w per channel - I will not use separate power amp.. Saves a few $$ and some space/wiring. Speakers there is huge choice and I understand why you picked yours. Great value for sure.

oooer - had an experience today where the built in mic for the head unit wasn't up to snuff lol thats an awesome head unit and I did't even think to look for one with that much per channel. 100W would kick those 6x9's alive in the back me thinks.

Well found these lights at Auto barn to replace the old ones that had rust in them - much better at night - really focus the light with out much spread so reflection off the windscreen is not an issue.
360 rotation so they can point in to the center console area easy as well.
128777128778
And mounted the 6x9's in the back - oddly in a spot that I had wondered WTF I was going to fill with, and got an amp to get them thumping for those long drives.
Still have to clean up the wiring job but it sounds awesome now - nothing tinny in this Rangie :D

7th September 2017, 08:16 PM
Looking good. There are a few guys on here who have put twin snorkels on their Rangies. However, I'd take off that wind deflector from the roof rack, as there's not enough angle to it. It'll have a lot of "suction" behind it, which will cause plenty of drag.

Airbox... it ain't - Second snorkel plumed for cabin air intake to prefilter dust saving the havac fan and filters and never have water push open vents again.

Hey Davo,
That wind deflector is required - with out it the noise from the racks is unbearable. We are going to redesign it a little but with it on its like there are no racks up there from a noise point of view. Other wise we have to stay under 80kph and bugger that for a joke :)

Hi ya, well I have looked at this... I'll need to cut a fair bit off the wings length wise and also on the inside just like you say... but I am not sure if I should do then as I wont be able to put the bends back in to the sides for strength.
Also not sure what I should use to cut apart from angle grinder with a cutting disc.

Trip Idea;
Recreate my first true 4WD trip - from Sheep Yard Flats across the top to Dargo, 8 years ago in my old Green Rangie that had a 4.6lt V8
Trip Plan;
Get to Sheep Flats for first night camp
Go up Bluff Link track
Then King Billy Track
Zeka Spur Track
To Wonnangatta Station for the nights camp
Next day headed to Wombat Spur track
Then down to the start of the Collingwood Spur track (Steepest track I have ever done, with a rooftent on as well!)
I wanted to be able to do the trip alone so I bought a chainsaw and a few other things. We were in low range for most of the time finding the tracks much more chopped up then it was 8 years ago.
Turned out to be the most epic trip I have ever done. If not for the rock crawler gears and rear locker, it would have been winch work for sure!

Good on you, it's so nice to see a Classic being used like that. How did the springs and shocks go, especially with all the extra weight?

Hi Davo,
They went really, really well. I got those tires fitted up and didn't check what PSi they were set to - figure they were for road of course - hit the dirt roads in to the first camp and it... felt smooth as silk.
Thought wow - these things with the shockers on soft are doing well. Stopped and decide to air down a little... they were at 45psi! I thought wow! Check max psi rating to 85psi! ok light truck version - put them down to 26 on the front and 25 on the rear.
So having them at the 45psi was working the shocks and springs - full load for all of us and it did it like dream :)

Thanks for that. It's always interesting to see what someone else thinks of a product. Do you have any part numbers handy? I've got some used King Springs and Koni shocks on mine, (they came from a wreck), and they've been great, but perhaps a bit saggy on the back. It's good to have some other options.

Sure do as I have the Terrafirma book handy;
For heavy duty springs - rated for plus 300kg on the rear for constant load or additional equipment (IE; Long range tanks, draws, fridge slide, rear wheel carriers and rear roof load) Front is rated +100kg for winch bar, winch and bash plates; Not having this stuff would have it sit higher than the 2" lift.
Front - TF015
Rear - TF027V
For the 4 way adjustable shocks for +2" lift;
Front - TF174
Rear - TF175
You can get these in +3" and +5" as well :D
The travel on the 2" is awesome - so awesome that one side let the spring pop out very easy. Which we suspect could be a bent sway bar... but for now have a plate on the outside to let it relocate if it does drop... is has and does relocate well :) I could put cones on - but I got polybags in to level out the load as well. This could be due to the coil conversation over the air suspension - we also swapped over the rear for the defender rear shock for a little less travel - on that recent trip it work perfect - didn't lift a wheel at all.
I should also add I had those same Koni shock and king spring setup on my old Greenie V8 Rangie - these **** all over them - had the whole lot done for about 1600 ;)

wow - 5 months on from the first post and shes nearly done...
I am all excited to see when my fridge slide and custom drawers are sent - can not wait to see them... and see if the $$$ was worth it lol :)
Have also got a set of Terrafirma Rock sliders ready and waiting for pickup and fitment.
Mean while I fitted some rubber flexi flares but not ones using the lip, but ones that screw right on the side of the guard.
133067133068
The idea being I wanted them to protect the car a little from rocks being kicked up and mud - worked a treat so far.
133070
Have fitted a reverse camera from Park mate which links to my GPS for the screen. The camera is mounted up on the roof rack looking down so I can see if anyone even kids are close to the rear of the car.
I didn't connect this to the reverse lights, but ran it to a switch so I can turn it on at any time and so it won't come on automatically.
I also bought a Kings \ 4WDsupercentre GPS heads up Speed display - which works heaps better than I thought - more so in the day as I am not using the plastic film included with it. Works fine on the windscreen.
Solves the issue of guessing my speed with the speedo being a little out with the muddies on.
133069
Last things to get done are;
Get other rear bar sand blasted and painted same to wheel carrier & fit up
Fit draws and fridge slide
fit water alarm & x guages for water temp, oil pressure, boost and EGT's
Setup third battery and clean up all wiring
Not far off now !!

When I searched for a donor 300TDi D1 for my mate's LSE conversion there were 5x as many manuals as autos available on Gumtree. Ripped out the whole driveline plus the engine mount brackets and dropped them in the LSE. Dead easy really. All manual 300TDi's run the R380. The V8 cruise control was quite easy to adapt to the diesel, although they aren't usually much good after 20+ years.

There’s an rrc for sale on my street. Looks good. Not sure what year. From what I’ve read the 90s rrc are the easy swap but 80s models are harder? I have a 300tdi now with r380. Not sure I would rip the heart out of her but would certainly look for a donor vehicle. Or even a 2.8 stroker. Rrc are just stunning vehicles.

Hi Val,
The answer to this question is a long story of luck :)
In short.. I had a Ardens Green Rangie as my first 4WD - 4.6lt V8, Extractors, duel scuba tanks in place of main fuel tanks (80lt) and had sill tanks giving another 80lt of fuel. Had all the extras that you see on this one as i moved them over, 2" lift on it with koni's and king springs. these are a pic or two of her;
133569133570
But the fuel usage and issues that come with having a V8 like that in a classic wore really thin. Couldn't really get out of the state for big trips. So I decided I wanted a diesel finally.
I went out and bought a Disco 1 with the idea of moving all my extras over to it... first time I went camping I threw my swag in the back... and it was full! WTF I thought! With the Rangie I could throw it in the back and have tons
of room spare before touching the full roof rack. So I thought, could I rip out the TDI200 and throw it in the Rangie...
Well sure I could... if I had the right tools and area - but I didn't - So I called around and asked heaps of peoples... nope - no one wanted to touch the idea - but all said it was a great idea! :D
Accepting it wasn't going to happen I was still searching about and found a thread on this forum where a guy had the car I wanted... a RRC with a TDI300 from a 98 disco. Perfect platform! But... the said thread was about it being offered for sale and the thread went dead. Never said if it sold or not.
So I contacted the seller and asked - nope - guy had pulled out of it. Car was located in SA, I am in VIC. Decided - **** it, I'll get it. Little did I know just how lucky I was about to be. Bought it sight unseen apart from pictures.
Flew in to SA and met him at the airport.
A few things were not... as described - but she felt really good... Took her to my guy thats looked after me for the last 8 years and asked him to go over it... what was confirmed and what I got turned out to be unreal!
First things first tho - all of the change over work was done in QLD and engineered with a mod plate in QLD as well. You can do this because in the UK landrover did fit a TDI300 to a RRC. So I didn't so the change over, I am the lucky guy thats ended up with it;
TDI 300 from a 98 disco and runs perrrrfect! Mechanical fuel pump as well. nothing electric as such
Rock crawler gears by Maxi drive @ 30% reduction
Twin maxi lockers - vacuum type!
Maxi axles and rear axle housing which are awesome
Upgraded CV's by Maxi drive
5sp Manual suffix box - meaning it later build of the gear box with better bearings
2" Lift
Just picked up some Terrafirma rock sliders and got a custom set of rear drawers and a 65lt fridge slide for the back of it. ;) Drawers still need covering and putting in the right place... but I managed to do it so I can remove the top drawer and fold down the rear seat still! ;)

Thanks for info. I read that there are kits in uk for the conversion. Yours is an awesome vehicle. I find that the disco not so bad on space. I can fit a lot of gear in it but i guess could even more in rrc. RRC in my opinion is the best looking 4wd ever made. Everytime i see one i feel a little jealous.

So saving up the 2-3k it will probly take to have the whole dash ripped out, and the heater unit full rebuilt and all new seals and filters etc etc - and do the aircon while the dash is out and clean up wiring.

Whip the dash out yourself..... You could always replace the broken stuff yourself. The issue is ... where on earth do you find unbroken range rover plastic as a replacement. The dashes in these things are incredibly simple. And fall out very easily (in very many pieces LOL ).
I couldn't imagine driving a range rover without the wheezy little v8 fitted.... the sound is makes is just so addictive :)

yeah I am lucky on the dash side ;)
as for the V8... with all the bloody issues that come with it and the **** fuel usage - I'd never, ever go back.
turn up the fuel pump, add new pin and turn up the boost and forget about any V8! Diesel is where real 4WD'ing is and its how to best get around this country IMO
Have to remember - I built a full off road touring 4WD - not a play toy ;) which is what a V8 in a 4WD really is, a play toy.
Believe me I know first hand as well with my Green meanie with a 4.6lt in it for 8 years. The honest truth there is the V8 doesn't cut it when all ya mates are toymotas and nissians.

There's a lot of work in there!
Could you tell me how the overhead console is for "intrusion" - i.e. does it interfere with head clearance etc or create any issues for visibility?
I have considered this for quite some time and would take the opportunity to remove my headliner at the same time and make something similar.
It looks good. I just wonder how big to make it.

Hey Merc :)
If your not use to it and put ya head in first when ya jump in - you can hit ya head on it lol
But other wise, once your seated its actually really good - the sides are angled inward so in the event of a crash - you aint hitting your head on it.
Its a console I bought... 12 odd years ago from this forum - but could never use it - threw it in the shed and when I bought this one, I pulled it out and it all fit perfect and colour wasn't bad either.
I tracked it to be from Department of the Interior Car Consoles & 4WD Storage Drawers overhead consoles roof consoles custom built consoles 4WD interiors storage systems vehicle consoles radio console dashboard pod four wheel drive (http://www.consoles.com.au/) but they haven't made one in over ten years. I bought a rivnut gun and put in 4 rivnuts in to the ribbing in the roof and bolted it up from there.
ran power and CB wires up to it. Works awesome :) If you want I can measure it out - Its made from pine and thin ply - covered with a soft foam and vinyl.
Didn't end up fitting the wheel carrier - coz I replaced the heater fan unit! Wow - big job lol mostly back together for driving and have a heater yay!
I'll fit up that carrier next weekend and do more work on the dash.

Bitsy McRangieface looks great!
Any issues with rubbing the 265/75 16s on standard rims with 2 inch lift? I want to get this size and i'm hoping I can get away without having to get the wheels flipped.
No body lift or fender cuts required? I'm not totally opposed to cutting, but the flares I bought mount under the lip so if i have to cut I cant use them.

Hey razzor - you're an inspiration!
I have had a new Alpine head unit in the cupboard for 2 years now but too scared to start pulling everything apart for fear nothing will go where I envisage. This could be an option. Can I ask:
(a) where you got the caddy for your head unit;
(b) what you put in the space left by the old one; and
(c) have yo installed an amp and if so where did you locate that?

well apart from the high country trip I did; Shes just been waiting for her next one....
Sadly our young bloke just isn't keen on camping these days and we now have dogs and are in QLD, so seems very limited and still haven't taken her anywhere in 3 years now.
As such I have decided to prep her for sale.
Sadly for me, bitsy defender transfer bearings decided it had enough and went, sending roller through the gears and destroyed the lot.
Good new is that MR Automotive \ Maxi drive :p could get the 33% reduction gears custom made and all rebuilt! :) but combined with a new clutch pack, fly wheel, booster etc in the last year too; its been about 12k and not getting used.
Will be sold with all recovery gear, third battery and the 60lt fridge freezer.
