Been driving my little 1950 80" around for a few months ( has a 54 engine and 56 transmission) . A weird problem, the gearbox and clutch behave normally as I begin a drive from home, after about 10 minutes the clutch or gearbox began to misbehave , crunchy gear changes . After a stop, I could not select first gear, bad crunching like the clutch was stuck .Then a mystery , the problem would go away , but after more driving it would happen again .

Finally dawned on me what the problem is , the little car is stuck in 4 wheel drive . After a drive on bitumen roads , the " wind up" happens , the front and back axles fight each other , as I get onto a dirt road near home, the problem disappears , the dirt road allows the axles to " even up"

I found out about 'wind up' way back in the early 70's up in the Barrington Tops region, I did have the vehicle in hi-range 4x4 and drove through the area and out onto slightly firmer ground, about 2k's down this track, the transmission made a howling noise and we came to a shuddering stop, couldn't go forwards or rearwards, a big problem when you almost 150k's from home and it's wet/cold/miserable LOL, anyway I jacked up the right rear wheel and as soon as it was clear of resistance from the ground it spun (and I can't remember which direction) this relieved the build up of tension, I pulled it out of Hi 4 into Hi 2 and away we went, lesson learned, cheers Dennis
