View Full Version : How to excell in business- rant..

I sent an email requesting a bit of detail about some gears to a company in Sydney as it was no use buying a motor if the sprocket did not fit & was gobsmacked at the reply.
Is this a generational thing? Or is basic courtesy getting scarce?
This was my question.
Parts compatibility
Hi, I am modifying a scooter to lower its speed & want to order sprockets to suit 428 chain (32 & 20 tooth) plus a 64 mm freewheel & a 24v geared motor p/no MY1016Z. My question is, will the 20 tooth sprocket p/no MOSP10170 fit the motor?
Thanks, David
And the answer
David,
Absolutely no idea dude!
Unless you have the skills yourself (which it sounds like you don’t!), then most of the time you would just take the parts to an engineer and get him to make them fit!
Cheers!
Shane
Of course I had to reply...
Shane,
Great product knowledge mate & even better customer relations skills. Perhaps I am an engineer, ever thought of that ?.
If you could advise if the sprockets are removable from the motor ( I would assume so as it is held by a nut ) then I can take it from there.
Thanks
David
I guess at least I got a reply for my first email..

I would ring and ask for a manager and hope it is not Shane :bat:
Honestly i would call and make a formal complaint that is just ridiculous for public relations [wink11]
Either that or find another company that has some decent people skills [thumbsupbig]

'Dude',
I've taken my fair share of silly questions in my time, but I've never been that brutal. And that's even when a guy is 1 step away from causing an explosion that will have him cleaned up off the floor with a mop...
I can feel the burn from here.

A good way to run a business is to NOT let people like that anywhere near a phone or computer [bigwhistle]
That sort of thing is beyond Stupid.

Going by the reply, I have a 99.9% nagging suspicion that this dude was displeased that you're query took him away from his 'Facebook time'.
Had you posted the quiz via facebook(ie. not email!!) .. he'd have been more responsive.
email is point to point, so no one else gets to see the results. He gets no 'cred' answering via email.
Facebook tho is seen by all his e-friends, so he's obliged to respond. He gets lots of likes if he answers via Fb!

Almost certainly a 'Gen zzzzz'.(ie. half a sleep, when awake!!)
Us oldies grew up on a diet of Aussie shows and sitcoms; Aunty Jack, Norman Gunston, Kingswood County, Mother and Son, Hey Dad .. and so on .. so our 'elocution lessons' were learned via the good 'ol Aussie vernacular.
"dude" never really featured in our vocabulary due to a lack of exposure.
Gen zzzzz's on the other hand all learned to speak 'Merican. 'sup .. 'sappn'n ... and dude all feature prominently in US sitcoms.

My guess is: The email correspondent was the bosses son, in for work experience. He'll be back in year 10 in a couple of weeks.

I'll counter this by prefacing .
I work in retail .
Manufacturing a product we then sell to the general public .
I have met some really nice people - some are even on here ! Have also had contact with some real winners .
Unfortunatley its not generational when faceache is involved , the new threat is
"Are you on FaceAche " , " Watch Out "
No , comeback , less instant and the internet is forever - at least email will be deleted .
And i'm a fairly mellow person , but it is becoming harder to counter the "me " generations - old and young .

Well, they got my order despite the attitude.
It's a case of time and they were actually cheaper than O/S.. Funny how I was quoting their part numbers off their website too - I don't have any sprockets.
Here was the (edited) reply.
Dave,
Well, I’m an engineer...just not a mechanical engineer, but not knowing the sprocket that you have (the number means nothing to us), for us it would have been a wild guess!
The Sprockets are removable from the motor by bolt and I think they have a key that holds them in place!
I wasn’t meaning to be rude though, we have a lot of unskilled people that ask similar questions and the thought of them fumbling with power tools truly scares me!
That’s why we always push towards visiting someone that has the skills and tooling to do the job! Its nothing personal !
Cheers!
Shane
He seemed to come off his high horse as he thought I am an engineer- I never said I was [bighmmm] He is possibly a good engineer but a lousy sales guy... Notice I am Dave now?

You should have insisted upon henceforth being known as the 'dude-a-rini'.
From the technical questions you asked him...I would have thought it obvious that you weren't unskilled, and did indeed have some idea of what you were talking about.

As with some other businesses, it helps that the customer knows exactly what they want because the staff don't always know their products well.
