View Full Version : a hypothetical if i may

I'd like to pick your brains

this is all hypothetical but i want to see what people think would best fit the bill as i have been pondering it myself and i keep coming back the same conclusion, so i would love to be provoked into looking outside my usual square, if you get my drift.

The knowns:

Budget $20K
Has to cope with towing a 4m van
crewed by 2 adults and a couple of small dogs

The quest:

a touring rig
mainly onroad but able to cope with light offroad when needed

what would you think is the ideal rig to fit the bill ?

Is the $20k for the whole outfit or just the front half?

I believe it is only the front half (less the adults and dogs [biggrin])

A good D2a would do the job with ease and will cost less than 20k

What he said! We have the D1 & while good at what we want, the extra room in the back of a D2 or Paj is a big plus.

Having owned a Paj, D1 and D2, I'd go D1. $20k would buy the best D1 available with plenty left over for repair and mods.
I found the D1 superior in comfort to the D2, the extra space is negligable, admittedly my D2 is 7 seats as opposed to 5 in the D1.
Both are vastly more comfortable than the Mitzy.

Is the territory a good option? I only ask..as I have a mate looking for something under 10k to casually tow a medium van. His mechanic recommended Hyundai Terracan and Kia Sorrento...should I put it to him that a territory would be an option??

We have a 2006 Toyota Hilux twin cab TD that we bought new and it has done over 200,000ks without ANY problems whatsoever, The thing is pretty much bullet proof and these can now be had for under $20,000.
Nowhere near as comfortable as My V8 D2 But it uses less juice and is quite a capable 4WD offroad/onroad as well.

How heavy is a 4M van? Territory is rated to 2700Kg. If towing slowly up a long steep incline transmission overheating maybe a problem. I had to help a bloke driving a territory whose transmission overheated going up Clyde Mountain. Transmission cooler or vehicle with low range would solve that.

I am looking for a new daily drive that I can use to move my trailers about, go on quick trips to the city and long, comfortable interstate drives. I am so impressed with John's 2006 AWD Territory Ghia (his cousin's husband has one too) that I am looking around for one as well. A turbo petrol one for me. Expecting to pay around $13,000.

Ticks all the boxes.

Why did they stop making them?

My BIL has an 18' van with one of these as the tug and has had no problems. Had a V6 Commodore before that and reckons the Territory is far better all round.

In John's, three adults and luggage, Melb/Syd/Melb, 10l/100km.

A work colleague was getting 20l/100km from his. He was first off at the lights, led all the way, hard on the brake at the next red.
Typical city driver.

the AWD drive units scrub ball joints on a regular basis but apart from that are supposedly very nice

the diesel units are the 2.7ltr similar to D3's i believe.

the 4.0l barra ford engine is a great bit of kit, i regularly get 630+ klms from 53ltrs of juice, in my BA falcon.

pop058

If you go down the Territory path then a diesel can be had easily for that money. Unless you specifically need/want 4WD then the RWDs are cheaper to run and purchase.

Buy a dirt cheap 94 Disco 300TDi and Auto, rebuild engine and Auto box to new, fit 4.11 gearing and ARB diffs with Maxi-drive axles, CV's and drive flanges,
this way you KNOW what you got and for around 20K, Regards Frank.

nah

it's just a hypothetical

if one existed, at a reasonable price, a 4bd1 two door hard top would be my vehicle of choice but prices are utterly stupid at the moment IMHO

so it only follows that one would tend to look at other options i would have thought [happycry]

funny you should mention that [bigrolf]

i have asked several suppliers for a price on the sides etc and not one has ever bothered to get back to me...

i know where there is a 2 door 300tdi but it's knackered and it's over priced to hell other wise it would make a decent parts truck.

You only need the defender roof, the rest is easy, just use series bits. Perenties are getting harder to sell now, novelty has worn off for lots

Yes but you will find they have a lot of goodies added to them like power steer, turbo etc, now selling for the price they paid at the auctions.
Have seen them for around $9-$10k

Paj or Territory.
Reckon you would have more Paj's to choose over a Territory.
..aaand..
will assume the aim is to just get away in the van and vehicle after the purchase rather than spend significant additional time or coin setting up/repairing, so I wouldnt bother with anything LR in that price range. While there will be handful of tidy LR models to have in that range you will get better choice and consistency in the Paj or Territory.

In a lot of ways a Paj is a good vehicle. The downside is roadroar (!!) And lack of soul (but more character than Toyota). Cheers

I recommended that my daughter buy a PB Challenger 4x4 thinking she would buy a used one, but she bought a new one.
They have had no trouble with it and IMHO it is a good vehicle.
To me it is roughly equivalent to a D2 to drive although it has more turbo lag. .
I had a look at Carsales and there are several with about 90-100K on them for $19-20 K.
They have a rear difflock as stock.
The only neg that I can see is their towbar receiver is a little stumpy thing to avoid the fuel tank.
They have a 3000Kg tow rating.

The petrol territory is a good vehicle. Back in about 2009 we drove one at work. It literally did 700km per day over 3 shifts. Never missed a beat.

Does the Terri have the same or similar design to the Falcon/Fairlane?
If so, the issue is the bolt heads are up near the diff housing, necessitating removal of the housing to replace the bushes. Smart mechanics replace the bolts the other way round, making the next bush replacement quick and easy.
