View Full Version : EGR maybe?

Seems my car may have contracted the dreaded lurgy being spoken about in other threads. It started a couple of weeks ago when I was towing my van headed for Lightning Ridge. It lost power going up the Monaro Hwy towards Canberra. I thought I may have gotten some **** fuel from Cann River. I used 4th up hills which shouldn't have been necessary. Near Canberra at a roundabout it didn't want to go and a lot of white smoke came from the exhaust. I got to a servo and refuelled. When I started it in the mornings it was white smoke until it warmed up. It ran OK over 2000rpm but not happy below it. If I pushed it below 2000rpm there was a sound on the RHS which I can best describe as a sucking noise, suck suck suck. I got home OK using the Sporto gears and 5th gear not 6th. My mechanic sprayed some Wurth's EGR stuff down the intercooler pipes. I read somewhere that Revive was the stuff to use, I'm assuming that the Wurth's stuff is the same. He has squirted it again and there was another improvement. Are we on the right track? It's still a bit smoky first thing but when it warms up that goes away but it is still not happy under 2000rpm. I have ordered some of the Wurth's squirter and can do that on a regular basis easily. Should I continue to do it? Noted that when he took the RHS pipe off it was very wet in there. Is that normal? I replaced both the intercooler hoses last year in July. The RHS was split and the car was blowing black smoke on acceleration towing the van.
Thanks in anticipation. [smilebigeye]

Could be an EGR issue - the lack of power etc is a symptom but if there is an EGR problem it will be in the codes and the orange EML will be on. Also if locked open you will get lots of black smoke and reduced power.
I doubt squirting stuff into the inlet side of the engine will have any effect on the EGRs but it might help if you have a MAP sensor issue - possibly blocked - particularly if you have not got blanked EGRs. I would get the MAP cleaned and see how you go.

Thanks for that. Drove up to Orbost this morning with the float on. It felt a little starving for fuel. When we left there it felt better than when we were driving there. Then it went back to lousy and near home we have a very steep hill and only just made it up. Fuel starve maybe?

It's a 5 minute job to squirt the MAP/s and MAF/s to see if it helps. No harm in blasting some decarboniser thru the engine either I guess

Those symptoms are very similar to those I experienced with a split crossover pipe. A big job to change it unfortunately which may require body off.
Some models can be done without body off but still a big job..about $4000.
This is a fairly common fault where a gearbox has been changed as the crossover can be strained and the stainless steel flex sections crack.
Mounting brackets and/or bolts are sometime left out as it is such a pig of a job.
Fingers crossed for you.[bighmmm]

I had this issue in a D3 and a mate this year in a D4.

Run a screwdriver over the inlet hoses , could be as simple as a air leak - or a split hose .
mine had similar symptoms - without the black smoke about 12 months ago . Tighteningsolved it .
or pop the engine cover off - it just lifts up and have a looky at the inlet pipes ,they will prob be sticky ,oily and black .there is a great thread on the disco 3 forum on how to clean the egr

Thanks for the link , the pics are no longer there just a message from photobucket. The way I read it that is how to replace them not clean them , but at least I know how they come out.

There is not much point in cleaning them as within a short period of time they clog up again. As well, it is not usually carbon deposits that kill the EGRs - the hostile environment eats away at the workings and the valve does not physically move or its only does intermittently.

Confused. I start the car in the morning and withing 2 seconds there is white smoke coming from the RHS exhaust. Would that be a blocked injector bleeding overnight and then blowing that smoke out in the morning? I still have no power under 2000rpm. I use the sporto gears to keep the revs up. Did I mention annoyed as well? I've put injector clean through it and got a slight improvement. I have the EGR code but no orange EML light on the dash.

whats the "P" code ?
Could be the egr vale is out of sync - i think there is reset capability .
do you have a code reader ?
This is a bit rubbish , but might help
obd2 egr codes - Google Search (https://www.google.com.au/search?q=obd2+egr+codes&oq=obd2+egr+codes&aqs=chrome..69i57.15285j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8)
Its pain , but they have different meanings .
and i dont like suggesting , 'just disconnect the battery and they go away '
