View Full Version : What oil?

I am changing my allegiance from Castrol to Penrite. The bike and Fairlane have been changed and the TD 5, about to be done.
My question is should I be using HPR Diesel 5 (semi synthetic) or HPR 5 (full synthetic), the latter being suitable for light duty diesels?

HPR Diesel 5 (Semi) is the one to use Penrite Oil | HPR DIESEL 5 5W-40 (Semi Syn.) (http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/brands/hpr/hpr-diesel-5-5w-40-semi-syn)

I got that information from their site but I also believe a full syn is superior. Would the HPR 5 be suitable, overkill or under-spec, in this application?

I would say the fully syn is overkill, but I change my oil and both oil filters (Rotor & spin on) every 10,000Km.

Have a read here, Ian.

What oil should I use In my D2 TD5 (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-2-a/250401-what-oil-should-i-use-my-d2-td5.html)

I for one would listen to DiscoMuppet on this one. Seems he knows his TD5s.

Done your oil pump bolt yet?

Mine's been on the same regime, Kelvo. I've emailed Penrite but obviously won't get a reply until tomorrow.

HPR Diesel 5

If you really, really want a full syn,

Enviro + 10W-40.

It's a mid SAPS HD diesel oil with a string of OE HD diesel approvals.

Being mid SAPS it doesn't have the ZDDP and mineral ash levels of the Diesel 5, but does meet the more stringent ACEA E6/E9 wear/bore polish and detergency levels over and above ACEA E7.

Cheers John, I was going to do the oil pump at this service but due to the last minute dash to Lightning Ridge a quick oil change will have to suffice til the next service is due.

Thanks Rick, I was hoping you would respond. So the HPR 5 is a no-no? It's on special atm.

The Diesel 5 is a more probably a more robust oil for diesel use Ian.

Don't be too hung up on full syn/semi syn, it's the additive package that's important and Diesel 5 is blended as a heavy duty diesel oil.
I'm sure HPR 5 is a very good oil and will be fine too, it's a petrol biased oil that meets the API and ACEA light diesel specs.

At the end of the day it's a case of whatever you get a better deal on.

Either will be far and away better than the oils that were available back in 1999 anyway. ;)

IIRC Slunnie has fed his TD5 on a diet of Mobil 1 0W-40 since forever, the API CF/ACEA B3/B4 oils are fine and do the job well, it's just that my bias is towards the HD diesel oils as they have that bit more in reserve.

You're not moonlighting for Penrite under the pseudonym Alan, are you Rick? [biggrin]

Dear Ian,

Thanks for the enquiry.

Land Rover call for the European specification of ACEA B1 or B3.
Both HPR Diesel 5 and HPR 5 (synthetic) meet the slightly better specification of ACEA B4, so either oil may be safely used.

HPR 5 is arguably the better oil as it is fully synthetic: the choice really is yours.
Welcome to Penrite.

Regards,
Alan

i have tried most of the different oils and some not recommended ie rx super 15w-40 and oil samples never came back with any difference or noticed any difference in fuel economy

but do remember that as the oil gets older and degrades the viscosity adders are what breaks down so if you run 0w40 oil it will slowly break down to a 0w straight oil tbh a 10w30 oil would be a better oil then a 5w or 0w 30 oil if you plan to do more then 10'000km on your oil and dont go where its freezing or if you do its only for a few days and give the engine 5 mins to warm up before heading off.

as for what brand what ever you can get that matches up and is the cheapest so long as its not a no name brand

dont get to concerned on synthetic vs semi vs mineral there all still made from crude unless you get some really really high end synthetics that you wouldn't put in a td5 and there is argument for running mineral oil as due to the different size molecules can give greater shear performance, where as synthetics are better at suspending particles in the oil which is why they can be used for a longer time (generally works out around the same cost for those extreme range oils vs a std mineral oil)

when I was into vintage vw's a very experienced porsche mechanic and vw enthusiast used to swear by mineral oils in everything, claiming that in older vehicles the synthetics could weep through gaskets due to molecule size.

I would imagine this doesn't apply to TD5's and only to older cars with cork or paper gaskets, or maybe it's just bull!

Yep, I've committed heresy on here a long time ago by mentioning using a 15W-40 in the TD5, but the bloke was in Darwin and doing 10,000km drains, why use a 5W-40 ?

FWIW a 15W-40 pumps ok'ish even in Canberra at -7*, you just take a few more minutes of taking it easy while the oil comes up to temp.

What tends to happen with the wide viscosity oils like 0W-40 is that they start to shear to an SAE30 oil as the VII's break down, and then thicken back towards an SAE40 oil at the end of the oil drain with oxidation.
Mobil 1 0W-40 is particularly known for this.

I just bought 40 litres of RX super for the truck oil change, often thought about using it in the TD5 would be only about $40 worth but i will stick with Vavoline Semi Syn for now.
