Hi folks. Has anyone had any value out of the lead replacement products on the market, supposedly to provide protection for the valves. Appreciate any feedback Cheers Yonks

Hi

My experience driving around with two series 1' s and a friend who has owned a 1951 80" since he was 12 has told me these old bangers don't need anything added to the unleaded petrol, they run fine on straight unleaded. My friend drove his 80" across the Simpson desert without any problems . The exhaust seats are hardened inserts.

Somebody else might have more to say .

I have never used any unleaded additive in my 80" since they stoped leaded fuel
The IOE engines have hardened exhaust valve seats.

As the others comment - all IOE Rover engines have hardened valve seats and hence lead replacement additives are unnecessary.

In fact, the same applies to the 2.25l engine even though it does not have hardened valve seats, since experience has shown it does not suffer from valve seat recession except under exceptional conditions when it is used for long periods at full power, such as prolonged freeway driving. For more normal use there is no issue.
